So moving, raw, emotional! The story of a young boy growing up during a very bad time, World War II, in Warsaw. He was orphaned at such a young age, he doesn't even know his own name, nor remember his parents. This story isn't the first I've read about the Holocaust. I have read a few non-fiction stories in college, watched a handful of documentaries, a couple of movies too. But Mr. Spinelli nailed this one! You feel as if you are there, witnessing the events first hand. You feel for these characters with everything in your being. You feel their happiness, their sorrow, their fear, their hatred, their confusion. It will be forever added to my favorites list. I can't describe this book adequately and do it justice. You just have to read it!

This is a historical fiction set in [mainly] Warsaw Poland, that uses many facts and events of the time period. I highly recommend this book. With the assistance of a gorwn-up, younger readers can appreciate and learn from the subject matter and hopefully come to sympathize with anyone who is unjustly oppressed or mistreated.The main character is a young, destitute, orphan boy who has no certainty of his identity (name, ethnicity, etc) and his daily life of surviving in the city. The story begins just before the Nazi invasion/occupation of warsaw. Poland. Shortly after, he witnesses the subjugation of the Jews of the city and their forced segregation to the ghettos, then their eventual removal by freight train (to send them to the concentration or death camps).The character's child innocence and lack of common knowledge (and current events) brings a third-person point of view to the story, as the reader is taken along with him as he gains knowledge and identity.

This book captivated me. My son loved it and wanted me to read it. I promised him one night that I would if he would read a chapter of a book I liked. Needless to say, I couldnâ€™t put this down and devoured the book this weekend. Very well written...

This book takes place during the times of the Holocaust. Having read Jerry Spinelli novels in the past, it didn't surprise me that the main character was a young, somewhat innocent boy and that the novel is in first person. Overall I wish I would of read this book when I was younger. Spinelli serves as a great young adult writer, and this book is best suited for someone in middle school when they are just learning about the holocaust. This novel highlights a unique perspective with a light theme of how the holocaust impacted everybody in Germany; without the gruesome details. Beyond that, this still can be a great quick pleasure read for all ages. However, out what i've read from Jerry Spinelli, I recommend Maniac Magee over Milkweed without a doubt.The character development and characteristics in this novel was on point. Each character remained consistent and the details of each person's identity gave life to the story. The main character, Misha has a unique perspective from being raised on the street with little to nothing to call his own. Once the Nazis (or Jackboots as Misha called them) gained power, Misha was able to use his skills to help others close to him and himself. Compared to other Holocaust novels, this novel has less action and a lot less war battles than the average story. However, Milkweed still remains captivating and another Young Adult hit from Jerry Spinelli.

Milkweed is the best book I've ever read that deals with the Nazis, Hitler, the concentration camps, the fear and the reality of torture and death to the Jews during this reign of terror. It is written so any older child can understand it, and yet it captured my attention from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. My 12 year old, who IS NOT a history buff and doesn't even like to read, never has trouble remembering the Jackboots, the children stealing food to keep from starving, and the trains pulling away while loved ones held their arms out to each other for the last time. MILKWEED is a totally accurate portrayal of the horrors the Jewish people lived and died in under Hitler's rule, yet it is presented in a fictional way that children can understand. Don't miss this one. Thanks Amazon for putting Milkweed out there for all to read.

This is a very good book to use with younger students, but the ending isn't strong. I suspect the warm sentimentality is supposed to smooth over the ending.

A friend recommended this book and I'm just so glad that I took her advice. It is the story of a young Polish boy during WWII in Warsaw who has been separated from his parents, gypsies, traveling in the countryside. The author tells the story of the Warsaw ghetto through his eyes in a remarkable way.I loved the storytelling and found it a truly unique and powerful book.

My son's 6th grade class read this book in school and they were enthralled by it. After completing the book my son was emphatic that my husband and I read it too. We're so glad we did! The book was outstanding and kept us engaged from start to finish. Milkweed is a must read that set the stage for a very insightful dialog about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Sensational book! Don't pass it by!

This is an excellent book describing how and why amalgam fillings still exist today and what we can do to join the fight to prevent dentists from putting toxic volatile mercury into our mouths. It is well-referenced. It is also easily accessible to anyone. There is also lots of information on how our mishandling of mercury is poisoning our environment/us in other ways. I am buying several more copies for friends and family. The book was written in 1996 but sadly is not THAT outdated. In other words, things haven't changed much. Although many dentists are now using composites and other natural looking non-mercury containing materials to fill cavities, it is still common practice to fill cavities with amalgam, which are composed of ~ 40% mercury. Why is this legal? Read the book and you will understand but the simple answer is $$$, as is always the root of evil.

This book will probably never be a best seller b/c it goes against what the American Dental Association has recommended. It's a personal truth for me. Currently I am going through mercury removal and I know how important it is to get it out of my mouth, and out of my body because mercury is a toxin. I had met Dr. Hardy many years ago and listened to his lecture but was unable to undergo the dental work to remove the mercury because of financial constraints. I saved over the years and now this is really a happy time for me. I just can't understand the greed for money by the dentists who still use mercury and know that all other mercury is banned and yet somehow placing it in someone's mouth is safe. This is a pretty sick practice if they knowingly put someone's health at risk.

I am a physician that has a wellness medical practice in Orlando, FL. I read this book on the plane ride and could not put this book down. I love it! As soon as I got back from vacation I made an appointment to see Dr. Hardy. He is an amazing dentist and is very thoughtful and kind with excellent bedside manners. His staff is also very friendly. I am now proud to say that I am mercury free. About the Author

The Legends Club is John Feinstein's 36th book. He is the author of A Season on the Brink and A Good Walk Spoiled, both #1 New York Times bestsellers and Last Shot, which won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for mystery writing in the Young Adult category. I have read most of John Feinstein's nonfiction books. I admire his writing, and I always find myself enjoying the subjects he picks. The Legends Club continues that trend. It is an excellent book, particularly for those of us who live in ACC country. Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, and Jim Valvano are in fact legends in the ACC. Feinstein apparently had unusually close access to them, and the resultant stories are extremely interesting. I strongly recommend The Legends Club to any college basketball fan. I think you will enjoy it, and you will learn some things you didn't know before.

First of all I am not a basketball fan. I believe watching basketball means coming in in the last 5 minutes to see the drama and the conclusion.However, this book is really not about basketball as much as three great coaches who strongly influenced the game not only by their coaching skills but also by their character.This book provides insight into the world of coaching. The pressure and techniques involved recruiting and retaining top athletes, forming cohesive teams from athletes of diverse skills and personalities, and managing the pressure of the fans and alumni boosters.The books is about three different coaches with three different personalities and coaching styles. Or maybe they aren't really all that different.You can decide for yourself.The only book that rival this, in my mind, is "The Teammates" by David Halbersham.

Feinstein's first book established his reputation and began his long and lucrative career as a sports journalist when he exposed the innermost secrets of the Indiana basketball program and Bob Knight's coaching techniques (also earning Knight's lifelong animosity). I enjoyed his next book,"A Season Inside" which also dealt with NCAA basketball but then lost interest as he wandered to golf, minor league baseball and other areas. He is back in his wheelhouse with his latest book and has a unique perspective since three such iconic coaches will never again be found in such close proximity, and college basketball has evolved into an entity which makes the influence of coaches much less profound upon the success of their athletes and programs. The interactions between the egos of these three ultra competitive men are described vividly and the respect and love which eventually evolved between them form the backbone of this excellent book. Although I was never a fan of Duke basketball Feinstein has succeeded in giving me a profound respect for Mike Krzyzewski.

I broke my habit of reading almost exclusively books on music topics. I'm glad I did . "The Legends Club" is one of the best books I have ever read, and easily one of my Top 10 favorites. Feinstein has done extensive research, in addition to already having been around the subjects for many years, and he makes you feel as if you were right there throughout the journey of these 3 legendary college basketball coaches. Feinstein's writing is superb, and totally held my interest through every single page. You do not have to be a fan of any of the 3 teams highlighted to enjoy this book, although I would imagine if you are, it greatly adds even further to your enjoyment of the book. I think that anyone interested in basketball would like this book, and especially anyone interested in college basketball should absolutely love this book. For anyone interested n ACC basketball, it should be an absolute essential read.

I have always enjoyed sports author John Feinstein's writing. He's easy to read - funny, tells a good story, writes about subjects I really like, and has a great perspective. "The Legends Club" is no exception. He tells the story of the three ACC basketball coaches' national accomplishments in an enjoyable and interesting way. His sources are many, knowledgable, and very credible. He weaves in entertaining side stories, and in general, paints a good picture of them and ACC championship basketball during the last 50 years.The minuses are that he is sometimes a bit repetitive. Also, this book should not be viewed as taking a critical look at big-time college basketball - it doesn't, and I don't think Feinstein would ever claim that it does. The money issues, 'amateur' athlete issues, and sometimes dubious scholastic issues are not addressed. (There are other good books that do delve into college sports problems, if one is interested.) If you're looking for an easy, enjoyable read about three remarkable coaches, however, this is the book for you. I liked it.

Feinstein has created another thoughtful, interesting look into a well known, legendary, collegiate competition. The "Tobacco Road" basketball tradition and the longstanding history of one of basketball's premier conferences, Atlantic Coast Conference, comes to life after Feinstein's meticulous fact finding and thorough engaging writing style. Dean Smith, Jim Valvano and Coach K. are all included in this well done story. Anyone who has ever payed attention to these three universities in North Carolina will be more than entertained reading this truly enjoyable book. Basketball is a significant element of life in " Carolina " and Feinstein's book brings the historic perspective to life including players, coaches and administrations. This is a very good read for anyone who has an interest in college athletics.

I've been a fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels for 40 years, and I lived through the events chronicled in these delightful pages. Reading the book brought back many great memories of Dean Smith and Tar Heel wins -- and bad memories of losses.The book is arranged chronologically, and I found myself tiring at the accounts of what seemed to be the same seasons over and over. (I guess that's the way they were.)Over the years, I've developed strong negative feelings about Coach K -- as have many Tar Heel fans. I have to admit that I ended up admiring him for how he treated Coach Valvano and Coach Smith when they were struck by life-ending illnesses. He's not such a bad guy, after all. (That was hard to write.)

According to General Sir Frank Kitson, "Insurgents start with nothing but a cause and grow to strength, while the counter-insurgents start with everything but a cause and gradually decline in strength and grow to weakness" ("Low Intensity Operations: Subversion, Insurgency and Peacekeeping"). That 1971-era aphorism has repeatedly been proven correct and the US "Coalition" effort in Afghanistan demonstrates its accuracy yet again. After nearly two decades and around 1 trillion dollars spent so far, a bloody and very tenuous equilibrium exists between Taliban insurgents and supporters of the Afghan government. The war from its inception to the present time is comprehensively researched and compellingly presented in Steve Coll's two books, "Ghost Wars" and "Directorate S". Unfortunately, with no end to the conflict in sight, a third volume may eventually be needed to update the story.Despite the narrow focus implied by the title, "Directorate S" does not focus either exclusively nor primarily on that branch of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI). The CIA was the focus of "Ghost Wars". The much more obscure Pakistani analogue, ISI Directorate S (charged - at least in part - with providing guidance, logistic, intelligence, material and occasionally directed support for Islamist insurgent/terrorist groups operating against Indian influence and Coalition forces in Afghanistan) has a background â€“ but baleful - position in "Directorate S".Coll's history begins where "Ghost Wars" left off, i.e., the conclusion of the 1979-1989 battle of Afghani and allied Islamist groups against the Soviet Union. The USSR was defeated by CIA and Saudi supported insurgents. This occurred despite â€œall outâ€ efforts by a modern and generally ruthless military directed against a â€œragtagâ€ constellation of tribes lacking an air force, armored vehicles and other accouterments possessed by the Red Army. The Soviet defeat ought to have been an object lesson for successors, but it wasnâ€™t.Of course, the inevitability of dramatic and overwhelming US action against al Qaeda and its Taliban hosts after September 11 was obvious and perhaps justifiable at the time. What wasnâ€™t thought out though was the consequence of military action, that being a long-term and interminable involvement in a conflict that would result in (at the very best) a costly and unsustainable stalemate. Pham Van Dong, (North Vietnamese premier and Ho Chi Minhâ€™s close aide and successor) presciently commented to French war historian Bernard Fall in 1962, â€œAmericans do not like long, inconclusive warsâ€”and this is going to be a long, inconclusive war" and that was 3 years before we ramped up involvement.If, as Henry Kissinger remarked, "The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins" (Washington Post, March, 2014), we've failed utterly and completely in Afghanistan. As even a casual reading of counterinsurgency literature shows, the prospect of prevailing against an insurgency in territory adjoining a supportive state approximates zero. A quick glance at a map shows such a state (Pakistan) and a cursory glance at any news source reported since about 1947 gives insight into the ineradicable antagonism (religious, geostrategic) between Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India. Afghanistan isn't known as "The Graveyard of Empires" for nothing. The debacles outsiders suffered there are well known and the stuff of legends and fiction. Consider George MacDonald Fraser's anti-hero Harry Paget Flashman's adventures in the First Anglo-Afghan War. While our military leadership isn't as inept as that of Major-General William George Keith Elphinstone (whose disastrous retreat from Kabul harkens to Napoleonâ€™s retreat from Moscow) and we've yet to suffer other ignominies of First Anglo-Afghan War such as the Last Stand at the Battle of Gandamak and the Siege of Jalalabad, we aren't winning, either.â€œDirectorate Sâ€ details all the problems associated with porous borders, semi-autonomous (i.e., largely ungoverned) tribal regions, endemic corruption of historical proportions (the Karzai government), warlords, weak central government lacking legitimacy (parallels between Karzai and Diem in Vietnam come to mind?), opium, factionalism (in the US, Pakistan, Afghanistan), conflicting priorities (the Petraeus school v the Abizaid approach), lack of a coordinated strategy (CIA v. DEA v. JSOC, etc., etc), heavy-handed tactics (drone strikes killing civilians), the always inimical influence of religion (especially militant Islam) and competing/conflicting interests of India, Pakistan, Iran. A particularly ill-advised decision was made with the US invasion of Iraq.The real irony of our involvement in Afghanistan is this: â€œPakistan is 50 times more important than Afghanistan for the United Statesâ€, a candid remark made directly to President Hamid Karzi in the Arg Palace by Vice President Joe Biden. Karzai had repeatedly warned of ISI/Directorate S involvement in his country and the Americans were already well aware of it. We knew that ISI was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of many Americans and the Taliban likely wouldnâ€™t be effective absent Pakistanâ€™s support. In short, we knew we were facing rats in Pakistanâ€™s ISI: â€œPakratsâ€ and there was precious little we could do about it.Sooner or later, the â€œendless money that forms the sinews of warâ€ (per Cicero) from the US and Coalition forces will end. The casualties will exhaust us. We will leave. Whether India will allow Pakistani suzerainty in Afghanistan is anybodyâ€™s guess. As Steve Coll so well demonstrates, a major contributor to whatever happens next is Directorate S, â€œPakratsâ€ indeed and in fact.

This is a serious scholarly study of two national complexities supported with 37 pages of footnotes in tiny print.Overall, it's not an easy read. But conversely it's virtually pointless to try to understand regional conflicts without a close read. Studying Directorate S will not make one an overnight expert, but it will teach one to avoid others who claim to be without years of specialized training and on-site experience. Perhaps the strongest message is that no outsider can appreciate the complexities of ancient and modern tribal, ethnic, cultural, and religious rivalries, beyond a few with high security clearances and impeccable integrity.Coll doesn't do much undocumented editorializing, except for his contempt for how we stumbled into a war we could not win nor a peace we couldn't impose."No small part of N.A.T.O.'s failure to stabilize Afghanistan flowed from the disasterous decision by George W. Bush to invade Iraq in 2003. The war inflamed and mobilized deeper resistance to American counterterrorism policy and warfare in the Muslim world." (pg 664)Those seeking context--who have seen the elephant or seek more understanding of this old expression--should turn first to Chapter 26, Lives and Limbs. The book may be mostly political, but there's a human side too, described indelibly on a human scale. Best I've ever read.

Steven Coll, dean of the Columbia School of Journalism vividly describes our involvement on Afghanistan from 2000 until the beginning of the Trump Presidency. The beauty of Collâ€™s work is his clear analysis of the various factions of the CIA, the Military and the State Department, showing how their interpretations of events in Afghanistan affected the course of the war. The journalist demonstrates his in-depth knowledge of the ethnic divisions in the country and how they play out with class and economic disparity. He introduces the Taliban players in the Afghan War chronologically, builds up suspense as he describes what US decision makers favored a military rout out and who wanted a peaceful negotiation with tribal Islamists. We learn who the characters are who represent the north or south of Afghanistan, who trusts Pakistan and who view the Pakistani Secret Service as the source of Al Qaeda operatives who filter down into Kandahar to plant IEDâ€™s. The known events like 9/11, Holbrookâ€™s sudden death, or the perceived success of General Petraeusâ€™ successful â€˜Surgeâ€™ act as pillars of pivotal changes. Finally Coll summarizes the the 16 years of war and hypothesizing on why we are still fighting this war, sixteen years later.
