I really enjoyed this book. Short simple text and numerous illustrations. The illustrations are in black and white, which may make some miss the detailing on the garment but for me the specifics show through. It not only includes clothing but jewelry, hats, and undergarments as well. A history is given about the major shifts in design and each illustration tells what material was used in the garment. If you are into historical garment sewing you will love this book.Is it worth it ? YESI think the only thing that could make this book better is colored illustrationsOh and the binding, better binding should definitely have been used. Mine is already wrinkling.

It's said that the invention of a practical sewing machine, which occurred in the 1850's, opened the door to a mania for more complicated clothing. And looking at these engravings, with their typically Victorian meticulous attention to detail (reproduced with clarity and exactness), you have to agree. From the very first pages, uniquely designed hems, unusual decoration, and a generous use of embroidery make their appearance. By 1869, "bustles and puffs," bows and braid, lace and scallops and trailing trains are beginning to weigh down Madame's garments. In the '70's the bustle becomes almost ridiculous (to our eyes) in its complexity, but there's a brief return to the "natural" form, which gives way to the ever-more-pinch-waisted hourglass figure and so much fabric on the derriere that you wonder how women sat down. In the '90's the influence of the art of Charles Dana Gibson is clearly seen. Though these costumes were definitely intended for ladies with both money (to hire professional seamstresses) and leisure, they were no doubt adapted and copied by all levels of womanhood, and certainly the basic shape was followed everywhere. Clothing for all occasions, from the ball to the beach, is included, along with accessories and even coiffures, all with the full original descriptions; most of it is for women, but some pages include children's wear. At the back is a brief but useful glosary of fashion terms of the time. Anyone who has an interest in Victorian costumerie will need this book on the shelf.

Pictures are facing the wrong way and makes difficult to read and look at photos. Get the hard copy book. The book it self is great but the kindle option should not be offered unless they fix the formatting issues.

This is a book that I purchased to add to my collection of reference materials that I use for Victorian sewing and costume design for a few reasons. First it has a great time span - it includes a wide variety of dress designs and types from the period as indicated on the cover 1867-1898. Also, many of the dress descriptions are original so even though everything is in black and white, you can still get a good sense of the the dress itself for research purposes. On the research note, because of its detail, I love having this book around for inspiration/reference while doing costume design because then I have reproductions of authentic print materials to check against. A must have for costume design book for those interested in the Victorian period.

What would romance writers do without Dover and their marvelous historical books? These books and even era paper dolls are inexpensive, and yet, thorough works that really can put you into the period. This book is stunning.Victorian Fashion from Harper's Bazaar 1867-1898 is definitive book on Victorian fashions, however, while is stunning work, you should buy Full-Color Victorian Fashions from Dover Publishing as well. Together they are everything you need. This book goes in rich detail, just not the dresses but down to hair and accessories. It's broken down into four sections: 1) Bustles and Puff (1867-1874) 2) Natural Forma and Cuirass Body (1875-1882) 3) Return of the Bustle (1883-1890) and 4) Hourglass Figure (1891-1898). The drawings are detailed and cover every aspect of fashion of this era.An absolute must for romance writers of this period. High recommended.

I bought this to expand my costuming library, and have to say it is an amazing reference book. It has plenty of visuals (every page) with explanations of fabrics, how it is worn, and what for. It is NOT a how-to or a sewing book by any means. My biggest complaint with this book is that it only covers women's fashions. Children's fashions are mentioned in passing but never explained, and men are completely skipped over. I understand that men's fashion has not changed much, but I expected something. But for 3.99 including shipping, I'm not complaining too much.

So many stunning detail shots, front, side, and back! Tons of accessories, wigs, and hair styles for the time span too. Very helpful for guiding clients through aesthetic choices for Victorian clothing, as well as giving lots of inspiration for how to decorate a standard shape.

As I posted on Goodreads: This is an excellent resource for those who are interested in mid-late Victorian fashion. The tiny changes in silhouette and focus were fascinating to read about. I only wish that some of the commentary at the beginning of each section was included with the fashion prints, so I could more adequately notice the changes.

This is the second book in the Mighty Jack series and was an absolutely amazing read! I am a huge Hatke fan and really enjoy both the Zita the Spacegirl series and the Mighty Jack series. My 10 year old son also reads these graphic novels and they are his absolute favorite right now. This is a very fun and feel good story that’s an absolutely pleasure to read.In this book Jack and Lilly chase the ogre who kidnapped Maddy into another dimension; a sort of floating crossworlds between the worlds. It is incredibly creative and fun to read about with lots of adventure and action.I love Hatke’s illustration; the drawing lines are fairly simple but the color is spectacular and the creativity behind the illustration is amazing. The illustration really makes the whole amazing story come alive.I also like there are some interesting topics covered in here. Of course this storyline continues with the importance of supporting and protecting family. It also covers some about struggling with finances, not taking things at face value, friendship and responsibility. There is a nice big surprise at the end of the book too, which absolutely thrilled both me and my son.Overall this was an amazing read and I loved every moment of it. This is a fantasy graphic novel that is aimed at middle grade readers but is great for readers of all ages. Everything about this graphic novel is perfect from the story to the illustration. Highly recommended.

For those who love a fairy tale inspired fantasy Mighty Jack and the Goblin King - the sequel to the must-read Mighty Jack is perfect. So, if you haven’t read that one yet - first of all - get on that. And second of all, I’m about to reveal a spoiler for the first book so…. you know, you might want to skip ahead a few seconds if that would bother you. Okay - Mighty Jack and the Goblin King begins with Jack and his friend Lilly in pursuit of the ogre that abducted Jack’s sister, Maddy, and carried her up the beanstalk into another realm. Now, I’ve read Jack and the Beanstalk so I thought I knew what they would discover in this other world. But, no…. completely and wonderfully different than what I was expecting! Here are three things to love about Mighty Jack and the Goblin King.1. Lilly’s story with the goblins. At the very beginning, she and Jack get separated and she ends up rescued(?) by a clan of goblins and on the brink an arranged marriage with their king. And the goblins are this weird mix of cute and gross and sweet and disconcerting.2. The magic eight ball and the old mustang that Lilly finds in the goblin’s junk heap. And how both of those objects come into play later on in the story.3. That surprise ending!! I finished this book in the waiting room of doctor’s office and I embarrassed myself by squeaking loudly when I got to that page. The Mighty Jack books have been a huge hit with my students and my kids. And I love them because they have depth paired with a lot of action and humor. So if you have kids who loved Amulet or Hilo - this would be a great series to introduce to them next.(Excerpt from the Books Between Podcast Episode #38)

My son is rather obsessed with Ben Hatke's books, it really started with Zita the Spacegirl, but all of his books have been favorites in our house, and we would highly recommend them. But after reading the first Mighty Jack book a few months ago, my eldest has been eagerly awaiting the next book. It came today, and he was itching to open it and read, but he waited until after dinner and we read it together. This book picks up immediately after the events if the previous Mighty Jack book, do it would be helpful to read that one first. We hadn't read it in a while, but my son's were right back into the middle of Jack and Lilly's search for Maddy. As always with Mr. Hatke's books, the art is gorgeous. The story is fun, the humour is nuanced, and the interpretation of the Jack story is fresh twist on the classic. And there are the inevitable cameos from his other works. We picked up three copies, so that we can donate them to our library and ensure they are in circulation, but I'm sure Mighty Jack will be coming home with us again.

B.Hatke has made a wonderful follow-up to “Mighty Jack” that has the action and suspense needed to really update the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale. Jack, Maddy and Lilly are back in action along with a wink-n-nod to “Nobody Likes a Goblin.” I especially like the ease of world-building in this story, and especially appreciate B.Hatke’s careful connections of plot to frames in this graphic novel - The flow is smooth. It was an interesting choice to create a small rift between Jack and Lilly, but it doesn’t seem to be hindering anything in the story. I also like the cliff-hanger in the epilogue when the cast from Zita the Space Girl come back to throw in a new twist. Apparently, there will be a third story, and I look forward to it.

My family and I have read and love most of Ben Hatke's books (The Might Jack series, Zita the Space Girl, Nobody Likes a Goblin, the the one about the home for homeless creatures) are all fantastic. This is a great second book in the a series with a nice twist ending only readers of Hatke's other books will get. The story is great thought there is one weird thing which my 5 year even pointed out: the girl character does everything in this book - and then towards the end Jack is told 'You did a great job saving everyone Jack!"

This is an absolutely marvelous book! I can't believe how wonderful it is, even though I had high expectations after loving book one. The art is gorgeous, the humor is brilliant. The characters are endearing and admirable, and they're believably mistaken sometimes as they try to do their best. Read it. It's a charming and imaginative adventure, and a must-read for kids or grown-ups like me. I recommend first reading Mighty Jack book one. There are plenty of nods to his other stories, so you'll be rewarded for reading the author's other comics and children's books, though it's not necessary in order to enjoy this book.

#8,289 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

"all-you-can-eat-oysters raw on the half shell, for six cents"In 1763, the first oyster restaurant opened in New York. Oyster cellars, serving every social class, were becoming deplete of oysters necessitating the need for oyster merchants. The New York Harbor oyster beds were empty. A charter sloop, the E.A. Johnson, would sail down to the Chesapeake. The hired crew consisted of ship captain George Hanford Burr, brothers Oliver and Smith Watts, 24 and 19 years old, respectively, and ship mate William Johnson, a physically imposing, smart, knowledgeable sailor. On March 20, 1860, Captain Burr wrote a letter to his wife. On March 21, the abandoned sloop was found adrift. Upon inspection, blood soaked planks and blood splatter was everywhere. No signs of life, however, Captain Burr's silver, to be used to purchase Chesapeake oysters, was missing...so was the yawl hanging over the boat's stern.Through the use of newspaper clippings and court documents, American true crime writer Harold Schechter presents the story of Albert Hicks aka William Johnson, perhaps the last pirate in U.S. history to be executed for piracy. The populace was fascinated, including P.T. Barnum who was ready to add to his "curiosities"."The Pirate" by Harold Schechter is a true crime read by an author specializing in serial killers. The life and times of 1860 New York, as presented by Schechter, enabled this reader "to feel transported", to witness the unfolding events. An excellent true crime read!

This is short, engaging, informative read. Author Harold Schechter covers the story of a brutal murder of the crew of an oyster sloop in the waters of New York in 1860. The murders were bloody and sensational. The murderer, Albert Hicks, was callous and indifferent to the enormity of his crimes. Hicks was quickly captured and rapidly executed.Schechter covers this story in an efficient fashion, offering the right amount of background. What I've found in reading historical murders is that the murder story offers an entry point into the different world that was the past. For example, in this case, we learn about New York's fascination with oysters, the oyster business, the underside of New York, and a culture where relocating from New York to Providence was all that a criminal needed to do - or so he thought - to elude the police. We get introduced to a conniving P.T. Barnum, who commercialized Hick's notoriety for his emporium of wonders by obtaining a cast of Hick's features and buying Hick's clothes to display on the wax statue of the murderer. We also learn that Albert Hicks' notoriety reached into our own age; he was featured as a character on Rod Serling's Twilight Zone.Schechter has a nice way of telling the tale. This is a short and fascinating book. If you are looking for a quick read on a morbid subject, or a short survey of history from a different angle, this is a good book to read.

This book is true crime, and I'd like to make it as clear as I possibly can that it's GRAPHIC! If you it isn't your intention to get the realistic, and detailed retelling of the murders committed by Albert Hicks in 1860, then perhaps reconsider purchasing this book. As far as true crime goes, this one I feel is more descriptive than some... maybe even more so than many... so take that for what it's worth. I, personally, did know what I was getting into, and was in equal parts riveted and horrified. This doesn't read like fiction. It reads like a documentary, and I actually liked it a lot better than many full-length true crime novels. I also really enjoyed the sketches that were included with the kindle version. Bottom line is if you're in the market for a short, vivid true crime novel, this is a good pick. The subject matter was, as always, horrific, but that's the point of true crime!

This is going to be a quick view review of The Pirate. After reading and reviewing another book in the series, “Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie” by the same author, I decided to take a look this booklet.I found much to interest me in ‘Slaughterhouse’ but I found the writing in “The Pirate” to be much smoother and more intriguing.Aside from recounting the dastardly deeds of the man once renowned for his brutal murders, what got me into the story was the discussion of America’s ravenous appetite for oysters. From that, Schecter pulled me further by explaining how people aboard a ship fetching oysters for New York disappeared and so forth. Then, another great hook that includes a tie-in to one of my all-time favorite TV series, Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone.”BLUSH FACTOR No worries here. You can feel free to read this aloud to your prayer group or any kin you desire. Of course, since it does deal with murder, you might still exercise some caution, but not for language, sex, or graphic violence, etc.Since the work is very short, I’m posting the briefest excerpt I can, but long enough for readers to get a feel for the quality and flow of the writing.EXCERPT‘…Following the trail of the suspect, the two police officers interviewed a string of witnesses who had encountered him the previous morning and who provided a precise account of his movements.According to the dock keeper at the landing, the 6: 00 a.m. steamboat had just left for Manhattan when the stranger showed up. Learning that the next ferry wouldn’t depart for an hour, he asked “where a fellow could get something to drink and eat.” The dock keeper, Abraham Hickbert, led him to a small oyster saloon nearby and accompanied him inside, where the man ordered two mugs of hot gin, three eggs, and a bowl of oyster stew. While eating, he regaled Hickbert with a startling tale. He was the captain of a sloop named the William Tell, said the stranger. That very morning, his ship had been “run into” by a schooner. In the collision, one of his two crew members had been crushed against the mast, “his entrails being distributed all over the deck.” The other had been “knocked overboard.” He himself had been asleep in the cabin at the time of the collision. Awakened by the crash, he ran on deck and found the vessel sinking. Dashing back into the cabin, he grabbed his clothes and a shot bag full of gold and silver coins— his “needful,” he called it— then rowed to safety on the yawl. After polishing off his twenty-cent meal, the stranger pulled a…’Schechter, Harold. The Pirate (Bloodlands collection) (Kindle Locations 103-114). Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEThe writing is excellent from start to finish. Enough so that I bought the last four books in the series, for this is True Crime Fiction at its best.A solid five stars. Will you help me? I hope and trust that this review has helped you.
