This is a fascinating book if you live in, or are familiar with Los Angeles. So why did I give it only three stars? Another reviewer said it before. This book takes large maps and shrinks them down to small maps. It works with some, but fails with others. We keep a strong magnifying glass next to the book to browse, but even with that, some maps are too small to make sense of. The shrinking has effected the resolution to the point that some of the maps, even with magnification, are undecipherable. Don't get me wrong, what's great about this book is truly wonderful, however, I think that if I had had the opportunity to see the book in person before deciding to buy it, I may well have passed on it.

I first heard about this book from the LA Times and it sounded right up my street - it's about my favourite town, and I love maps. Double bingo!Written by LA Public Library archivist Glen Creason, who clearly has access to some wonderful resources, this book is informative and entertaining in equal measure. I've heard people say that LA has no history, a rather arrogant assertion that has no basis in fact. LA's history is right there if you've got the eyes to see it, written into the landscape, as this book shows in great detail.The maps reproduced here cover most of the recorded history of the region, and show the various geographical features of the LA basin and the surrounding area, from topographical maps to the early pueblo layout to the locations of the oil fields. The quality of printing is very good, with the maps rendered in sharp detail on very good quality paper, with each map featuring at least a page of accompanying text putting the map in context and describing its genesis.It's not without its flaws; the proof reader must have been asleep, as there are quite a few errors - on the very first map page Harriman's name gets transposed to "Harrington" by the end of the page, and later on we're told that in 1928 Los Angeles harbor handled "26.5 tons" of cargo, "a record which stood for decades". 26.5 tons! That's out by a factor of a million. Also although the printing is very sharp, some of the maps are printed across the folio, so it's sometimes hard to make out detail across the page crease. I'd also liked to have seen more maps of the fault lines across the county; it is after all a major earthquake zone and fault lines are a very important feature of the region.Still, these are minor quibbles. There's much to reward the interested viewer here, and it's the type of book that I'll be dipping into many times over the years. This is an excellent reference book. covering some specialized aspects of Word 2013 that are not covered in other books. It's too bad that there is no such thing as a "complete bible" for this complex subject. The only solution is to buy more books.

There are too many important features of Word 2013 - if one is into publishing eBooks - not to purchase this bible on Word 2013. The hyperlinks features assist greatly if multiple contents pages are created (such as having 3 or more chapters in one eBook) not to have this aid. The current project is a series of eBooks with multiple chapters, and hyperlinks are critical. If you are into publishing eBooks, this is a must.

This may be a good book if you buy the printed version. However, I was stunned to find that, in the Kindle version, the index did not provide links to relevant sections and did not even provide page numbers for indexed items!!! The only link into the document through the table of content is at the chapter level, which is very generic (eg "Improving Document Content and Consistency.") Subsections within a chapter are not listed in the TOC. All of this makes searching for a specific topic very frustrating.I would not recommend buying the Kindle version

This has been a great reference manual. I can always find ways to accomplish tasks as efficiently as Word is capable of doing them with these instructions. (Still don't think Word is as efficient as WordPerfect when it comes to word processing programs.)

I purchase the Bible each time I upgrade my Microsoft Office. It has useful information and I've always been able to find what I needed.

One of the best books on Word I've read and I've read several. Very thorough. I would give 6 stars if I could.

This seems to be a great reference. However, I bought it to figure out a specific problem, and the problem doesn't seem to be explained at all.

I found it a very compelling record of both his personal journey, and the depth of his research into understanding and explaining the effects of various modes, and chelating agents commonly used.This book is very readable, and will not bore you with too much heavy, dry scientific details. There is just the right amount of information to satisfy your curiosity. The choice of individual peopleâ€™s stories is fascinating and as convincing as the science itself.If youâ€™ve ever had some curiosity about chelation therapy, how itâ€™s given and what it does, this book will be a great, in depth, but easy to read choice to start to answer your questions!

The author details his experience with Chelation therapy & EDTA, an FDA recognised atlernative treatment for elimination of toxic metals from the body. Besides sharing his personal experience, he has also compiled documented experiences of other people & research in this field. I was happy to hear that people who used this treatment were able to rid themselves of several degenerative problems & other grave health issues which otherwise couldn't be helped or were expensive to treat. The book also has helpful tips on how to find a practitioner, the cost of various important tests & a wake up call for the ladies!

Great book to understand how toxic metals can be detected in our blood and a painless way of getting rid of them with non-evasive therapies approved by FDA. Chelation is not a popular word everybody can understand. This book does a great job explaining the procedures with actual results and case histories of people who have benefited. A must read for people with heart issues or diabetes and even other medical issues in general.

Concise, easy to read. A wonderful companion to Dr Cranton's" Bypassing Bypass"!

Prem Chhatwani has written a few books on alternative therapies. This one is focused on ETDA chelation therapy and is written from first-hand experience. Chhatwani tells of how, at age 50, he was dealing with Asthma, a slightly high Cholesterol level and a family history of heart disease. He decided to investigate and try alternative remedies and now, at age 75 is Asthma free with a healthy heart.Along with his own story, Chhatwani has compiled case studies that support his position. If you are considering different treatments, especially chelation therapy, this book should have some information that is of interest. Of course, you shouldn't take this type of decision lightly; to quote the author: "always investigate on your own before proceeding with any alternate remedies."

sorry folks, this was poorly written and has the info I could have downloaded off wikipedia. Very disappointed.

It is very great book to read for those are having toxins in their bodies, that has a symptoms like a high blood pressure and stroke from it.

About the Author

Howard Schilit, Ph.D., CPA, is the founder and chief executive officer of Schilit Forensics LLC. Dr. Schilit is a pioneer in the field of detecting accounting tricks in corporate financial reports that mislead investors. Howard was the founder and CEO of CFRA, a global forensic accounting research organization. He has been a leading spokesman before the US Congress, the SEC, and global media outlets about the causes and early warning signs of accounting tricks in public filings. Dr. Schilit began his career as an Associate Professor of Accounting at American University and continues to teach and lecture all over the world. Dr. Schilit holds his doctorate in Accounting from the University of Maryland. Jeremy Perler, CFA, CPA, is the Director of Research at Schilit Forensics and co-author of Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports (3rd edition, 2010). As one who invests for long term reliable income using the dividends paid by publicly traded stocks, I find the content of this book good and most of it useful, at least at the conceptual level. The author gives several examples of companies who have accelerated earnings, delayed expenses and booked what should have been operational cash flow as cash flow used for investing activities. This is good and helpful. But what the book does not do is show you where you can find such information in the quarterly or annual shareholder reports. Where would I go to find information that would lead me to understand that the company is selling its A/R and what wording is typically used that would suggest A/R has been sold?And one constructive suggestion to the author....most who will want to read your book are sophisticated enough to know the basics of financial statements and are likely interested in getting into the 'meat' of the shenanigan. But you often begin chapters or descriptive sections of a chapter with somewhat lengthy quaint metaphorical examples as a lead in to the shenanigan you're about to address. As I progressed through the book, I found this distracting and would skip those pages. I appreciate keeping the book interesting and non-boring, but sometimes a little bit of analogous description goes a long way :-)Otherwise, this is a very good book on this subject.

The author boosts this section of the book with high-quality examples from leading public companies including Sunbeam and IBM. You wonâ€™t believe the extent to which high-profile companies report earnings beats with fictitious accounting numbers. 4 Cash flow shenanigans â€“ The cash flow statement is one of the most difficult to engineer â€“ a company produces cash, or it doesnâ€™t. However, accounting teams still have four methods to boost cash flows when a business would otherwise produce very little free cash. This section primarily focuses on how businesses shift financing cash flows (money from stock and bond sales) into operating income. Also, this section uncovers how acquisitions and disposition can be used to make cash flow look stronger than it really is. 3 Key metric shenanigans â€“ This section targets the key metrics used by executives when they talk about their business and brand. In particular, it examines how corporate brass can turn attention away from struggling businesses with non-GAAP measures like â€œsame store salesâ€ or â€œaverage revenue per user.â€ This section curiously touches on the subject of â€œbookings,â€ a metric used by recent IPOs like Groupon to hide their true revenue per user metrics. I personally loved this book for the following reasons:Very clear graphics to follow.Very clear break down of how companies manage money inappropriately.Easy to follow and actually a fun read from a typically dull subject.If anything the only two downsides from this book are below:The transitions between sections and sub sections are repetitive, and a little annoying.The author occasionally talks down to the reader, and I think this is unintentional.The overall content, author knowledge, and easy to read breakdown of accounting gimmicks gets a 5 from me.
