Al Strachan was one of those guys who was feisty for a living. He was a sports writer and columnist for a variety of newspapers in Canada, mostly specializing in hockey. He appeared on such television shows as "Hockey Night in Canada," and has been around the game for more than 30 years.If you want to know what the ride was like for Strachan, "I Am Not Making This Up" is a good place to find it out in an anecdotal way.You expect some laughs in a book like this, and there certainly are some along the way. There are also stories which often have a point, but aren't funny. They're "merely" interesting.So far, so good. Strachan was usually someone who let you know where you stood. Now that he seems to be free of daily journalistic responsibilities, he's even freer to expression his opinions in such matters. His favorites and not-so-favorites come through loud and clear.For example, Wayne Gretzky and Scotty Bowman come across very well here. Ken Dryden and John Ziegler do not. Clearly, Strachan developed a good relationship with the first two, and had his problems with the last two. It's hard to say if access has clouded his opinions; Strachan pretty clearly knows Gretzky and Bowman. Dryden may never had a chance with Strachan since politically they are like Nancy Pelosi and Sarah Palin (that's Strachan in the Palin role, by the way). As for Ziegler, well, what self-respecting hockey journalist hasn't picked on him over the years?There's some score-settling here. I don't think Strachan has forgetten a slight in his career, and he sounds happy to give his side of the story here. Strachan makes some good points, too.On the minus side, if there's much organization to this book, I must have missed it. Chapter headings sometimes give a clue for a few pages, but before we know it we're headed in an entirely new direction. Meanwhile, you also won't find a quicker read in the book store. It checks in at 224 pages, and you can get through it in an evening.Hockey offers a unique blend of the American and Canadian culture, and those who have visited that world and know Strachan's work will feel pretty comfortable here. "I Am Not Making This Up" might be worth your time if you fit that description. I just wouldn't call it a "best buy" at $19.95 (American).

One of the best books I've ever read, in my top five of all time, and I'm an English professor, so you know I've done some reading. I believe I read it in a matter of two or three hours the first time because I was desperate to know what was going to happen to Okonkwo and his kin with the invasion of European colonization. Do not be put off by what you may have heard about the violence and/or cruelty; there are a few parts where the content is a little rough, but the unflinching lack of sentimentalism - the matter-of-fact tone - makes the events tolerable. I teach a lot of folks who are older teens/early twenties, and honestly, I don't think this is a book that should be taught in high school or at the undergrad level because I think it actually helps to have some life behind you when you read it for the first time. If I knew in advance (which I never do) that I was going to have a class full of people over thirty, I would use it in a class without question. I would also say it's a must-read for men because of its powerful depictions of the conflicts between fathers, sons, and just male kinship relationships in general. Achebe also gives great insight into two strong powerful female characters, his second wife and one of his daughters, even though they have a minimal amount of page time.

In this deceptively slim and elegantly written book there are at least three stories.One is a story of traditional African village life and culture in full detail (including a glossary of African terms). This story begins late in the pre-colonial period, and occupies at least two-thirds of the book before moving almost imperceptibly into another story, that of the way in which the village people deal with the arrival of Christian missionaries and the eventual establishment of colonial authority (in this case, British).It is also a life story of Okonkwo, a traditional African warrior of that time and culture. As Okonkwo matures and moves through early adulthood, the reader learns about the events in his life that shape the man he eventually becomes.In one respect, this could be considered just another chapter in the tale of how Christianity served as seeming helpmate to European colonization of not only Africa but many natives of the New World. In this story, however, there are certain signs of early tolerance and attempts at mutual understanding. Later attitudes harden when the tolerant head of the local church is replaced by someone much more stiff-necked, setting in motion a train of events leading ultimately to tragedy.For a story so simply told and without any real complicated plot twists, there are lots of interesting things to think about. Suggestions:- The story seems short on details concerning the way in which colonial power is establishedâ€”one day the whites are barely worth mentioning in marketplace chatter, and almost overnight, their presence seems to have changed almost everything. But perhaps this is exactly the way in which that story would be told from a villagerâ€™s perspective.- Tolerance is a major issue even today. Yet the villagers seemingly become victims of their own tolerant attitudes about the missionaries. If they had rejected them from the beginning, and had not allowed them to stay, things might have come out differently. By the time they recognized the destructive influence these beliefs had on their own lives, it was too late.- After a church burning, the colonial district commissioner gives village leaders a speech about the justice system the British have brought them. However, this justice system is not in evidence at that time; instead, what is visited on those leaders is summary â€œjusticeâ€ by the commissioner, followed by corruption on the part of his henchman as their penalty is raised even further.An amazing little book with so much packed into it and so much to think about.

For a while I have wanted to write a review for this book, but I chickened out so many times because no matter what I write I will never be satisfied. This should show how important this book is to me as a Nigerian. I can no longer avoid the daunting task of reviewing it, but I'll be brief. It's part 1 of an epic tale by Chinua Achebe and it's fiction, but it's also historical. Lots of books have been written about colonization in Nigeria but this is, by far, my favorite. I'll always be grateful to Achebe for writing this book in addition to others. I highly recommend it to all and may his precious soul continue to rest in peace.

Purchased the Kindle version of this book after clicking on a google Doddle for the Author on the occasion of his birthday. Although I considered myself well read, I had never hear of the author or this particular book. Of course most of my insights into literature is based on the European centric literary bias that exist in the U.S. education system.I am grateful for google for creating a doodle for a great writer that I was not previously exposed it. The book was an easy read, although the author is Nigerian, the book is narrated in British English. The book revolves around the life of local village leader in Nigeria inhabited by the Igbo people. The story dresses the effects and influence of British colonialism and Christian on the local population.I enjoyed reading this book. Better late then never!!!

I bought this book in spite of the authorâ€™s small screen notoriety. I gave it to my significant otherâ€™s grandson on his first teen birthday. My note to him said I wished Iâ€™d had a book like this when I was his age, and that we did not have to discuss it further unless he wanted to. Therefore, I donâ€™t know if heâ€™s read it. But the straightforward way the chapters are listed gives good pause that he has.

Great book to open conversations about puberty topics between tweens and parents. I do wish she had separated the info in the front and back of the book into 2 different books. The initial info is great for tweens. The last part if the book covers topics that are more appropriate for teenagers. All kids are raised in different environments, but for our 12 year old kids, advice about dating, choosing sexual partners will be a couple of years down the road. They're mom is trying to figure out how to let them read just the first half for now. The information is much needed, but tweens arent teens.

I've been looking for a book for my tween boy that both discusses changes matter of factly and also acknowledges that the subject matter may not be comfortable with them. A book that addresses questions that may first need to be answered by this book before the young man has the courage to ask and talk to his parent about them. Very well written. I can see it being a go to book for several months-years as my son refers back to it. Recommended ages 10 and up.

This book is a future gift for my grandson, as he's only 6 now. After seeing the author on a talk show, I couldn't wait to order this; such a great common-sense book to help raise a well-adjusted, thoughtful young man.

Bought this for almost 13 year old grandson. I flipped through, and thought it had some worthwhile info in it. He has now finished it and said he actually learned some things, so he thought it was worth reading.

I love Mayimâ€™s voice! Her words incite diversity and inclusion and encourage boys to seek to understand their feelings and emotions. I have passed this on to my own 12-year-old to read and suggested it to my other friends who have sons.

I thought this book would be more of a parenting guide for me, but it is written directly to the growing boy. It's still a valuable resource and I'll read it to my son when he is a little older.

For a single mom with no idea how the make body works this was a lifesaver!! Very well written and easy to use to talk to my son.

I'm betraying no confidence by saying he was once a British army officer serving in the Middle East, and then actually worked in the international arms industry for several years before conscience called.Although people like Judith Miller (Saddam Hussein And The Crisis In The Gulf) and Samir al-Khalil (Republic Of Fear) have done yeoman's work covering similar territory, Darwish and Alexander, besides having access to stratospherically high-level source material, manage a level of concision and readability that makes coherent sense of close to a century's worth of history, much of it deliberately obfuscated, partially erased, or hopelessly tangled to protect the guilty. Who the guilty actually are is Unholy Babylon's main theme.The book confirms that Iraq's plot to annex Kuwait was made known to most Arab leaders by February, 1990. Both the CIA and the Egyptian intelligence service warned their respective governments repeatedly, stating unequivocally by late September that Saddam's troops would definitely be moving across the border within days. Presidents Bush and Egypt's Hosni Mubarak chose to ignore these warnings. Why?Reading this chilling and repulsive tale of big politics and even bigger business, you find yourself yodelling why? every 10 minutes. Why, for example, didn't we see much evidence of the $ 50 billion or so in high-tech arms sold by the U.S. to Saudi Arabia over the last few years? When the Baath briefly came to power in 1963, the CIA passed to Saddam Hussein, probably an agency asset, a list of hundreds of Iraqi Communists, whom the new regime liquidated. The Baath was in the wilderness when the coup collapsed, but came back to stay in 1968. Unholy Babylon is the detailed chronicle of the creation of a monster - Saddam Hussein - aided and abetted by the United States and other western powers. The US needed Saddam, in their estimation, to counter the Iranian threat. The US and European countries were willing to tolerate and to support internal totalitarianism and terror, suppression of dissent by force, gas warfare and other war crimes against internal enemies and Iran, as long as Saddam would fight the Iranian menace. The British looked the other way as Saddam murdered dissenters on their soil. Everyone looked away as virtually every country in Europe, plus the US and Canada, lined up to supply Saddam Hussein with long range rockets and essential atomic bomb technology.Adel Darwish is eminently qualified for the job of investigating Saddam's empire, having been a veteran foreign correspondent in Iraq before he was thrown out for reporting a major missile testing mis-hap and thus revealing Saddam's secret missile development program.The hard cover edition of Unholy Babylon has been updated and corrected and is probably well worth the extra investment.Read this book to understand what is happening now.
