Reginald Ray's "Secret of the Vajra World" is the second volume of a two volume set put out by Shambhala Publications on Tibetan Buddhism. The other companion book is called "Indestructible Truth." Together, these books present a comprehensive and scholarly overview of Tibetan Buddhism.While these books are very interesting, they present a lot of detail and are difficult to enjoy if you don't already have a good foundation knowledge of the topic. For those who are just starting out, I recommend "Introduction to Tantra" by Lama Yeshe or one of the many other excellent books referred to in some of the reviews below.If you are a serious student of Tibetan Buddhism, these two volumes are an excellent reference. Although I have read them through once, I primarily use them to look up questions that I have or to establish context when I am reading other books on the topic.If you are very new to Tibetan Buddhism and you want something that is much less esoteric or intimidating, then I would consider "The Art of Happiness" by the Dalai Lama. While this is not a book on Tibetan Buddhism as such, it presents a lot of the important principles in a way that is understandable to almost anyone. It is co-authored by Dr. Howard Cutler who is a psychiatrist. I found his commentary helps bridge the gap between East and West for people who are completely new to this worldview.

If you do not already have a firm background in Buddhism and or the Tantric path you might be slightly confused or even disappointed. My husband however loved this book and also part 1.

less academic and more of a conversational writing style. the author provides a uniquely clear synthesis. and yes the title and dust cover art is questionable but the hardcover is much more tasteful.follow this up with the audio training Mahamudra for the Modern World to put it into action. it's just one credit if you use amazon's audible program.

What an amazing book to read and re-read. Many of the books listed in the bibliography are outstanding. You don't have to read Indestructible Truth first, but you probably should as that's an excellent work as well.

Dr. Ray is very knowledgeable about buddhism and is able to speak about it in everyday language without confusion. After trying to understand Buddhism for several years, this book along with volume 1 by Dr. Ray, Indestructible Truth, this book is a treasure.

Reggie is a fantastic writer, and has a western outlook on the tradition of Buddhism, and the practice of meditation. I have found all of his books to be very insightful, and complete.

This is an excellent scholarly presentation, despite the somewhat sensational Kamma sutra cover.It containes many insightful gems and elicited a number of "AH HA!" or "Satori moments" for me, even after my many decades of study and interest in esoteric spirituality.

While I was attracted to this book by the gorgeous graphic design and illustration, I was more than a bit intimidated. As interested as I am in this topic, I assumed this book would be way over my head. At best, I hoped this 2-volume set of 500-page books might replace Hegel's "Phenomenology of Spirit" as my bathroom doorstop.No so. This is a terrific book, even for non-specialists. Ray articulates his goals for this "circumscribed, nontechnical introduction to Tibetan Buddhism" as follows: to "(1) provide an outline to the subject in relatively short compass; (2) not be overly technical or burdened with the myriad details of Tibetan Buddhist history; (3) address the spirituality or "practice" of the tradition, rather than focus primarily on philosophy, dogma, institutional life, or political history; (4) give due attention to the "Practice Lineage" traditions such as the Nyingma and the Kagyu, which are often underplayed in this story; and (5) try to strike a balance between my own Western perspective and that of Tibetans speaking about their own traditions in their own voices." He achieves each of these admirably.Of course, it's not an easy read; this book and its companion are densely packed with information. But most the terminology is layed out in logical sequence, without discontinuity or digressions. This ethereal topic has a strange way of escaping the student's intellectual grasp. Authors in this area use terms (e.g. "emptiness") that -while apparently crystal clear to accomplished meditators- are largely inaccessible to "book students." I understand the teachers' hesitance to reduce Buddhist concepts to abstract defintions, but non-answers like "Zen is three pounds of flax" can be pretty infuriating for the newbee. That's why I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ray just goes ahead and defines terms without a bunch of qualifications.Finally, the author comes up with some really poetic langauage like: "Old Tibet [...] lay close upon the incandescent sea [of the] turbulent burning wisdom of reality."This is a book to study - to be read and re-read.

Trenae you did it again. It was a great book. I'm ready for part 2 to drop and the end have me speechless.

This book , was a redundant Hood book, a virgin in love with 2 men, one who wants her and one who always has a side hick who doesn’t know her place, then the last page somebody always gets shot....

I felt so bad for sevyn her mother didn't care about her at all... And it was a shame her sister father didn't try to get custody or some type of help for her.... I wonder what ever happened with her sister and mom.. Maybe that would be answer in part 2..i like both Croix and seek in different ways... Zeek been nothing but nice to sevyn and treated her like a queen I know it's a little weird about his ex but sevyn always told him they just friends so I don't understand why she fought that girl for no reason when she kisses on Croix... Boo is full of it and jazella is stupid for believing in him and choosing his side over her sister... I wonder what is DJ and lena story... I like clips I think he will be good for jazella..

Now I really love the fact that both Sevyn and Jazzy ain't scared to throw them hands and honestly all Trenae's have that in common but that is definitely where they stop. Both if these ladies are inexperienced in the love department. Yes Jazzy is willing to accept it but at what cost. Now Sevyn ain't taking to chances... she getting to the bottom of things the same time. I really hope her and Jazzy get there happy endings cause they both deserve it. I would mind knowing a little bit more about DJ and Lena either. That ending was crazy but I can't wait for part 2!!

I like Trenae’s writing a lot! She always gives you an intriguing story that has no problem keeping your attention and that’s what I love most about her stories. I was sucked in from the very beginning. So I love Sevyn’s character, I just got annoyed when she acted crazy over Zeek when she said they wasn’t together & it just seems like she’s very confused and fronting either for Zeek or Croix, I’m going to need her to figure it out!I want Clips for myself lol! Haha jk but POOR JAZZY! She’s just so lost in love it’s sad. I’m hoping her character will truly go through personal growth, by the time this is all said and done!Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Jazzy really was blinded by her situation with Boo and looked stupid in the end. As much as I wanted to feel sorry for her I just couldn't because she ignored all the signs and accepted every lie. Sevyn was something else but I would prefer her with Croix instead of Zeek. I don't think Zeek is being as truthful as he should be and although Croix can be mean he's a better fit. Jazzy and Sevyn are both in love with the wrong thug and hopefully they'll figure things out. I can only imagine who's responsible for everything that's going down. I can't wait to see how Jazzy handles the information that is now in front of her. #0850

If you are looking at getting this book, you are most likely a Lectionary preacher. As you are aware, there are two different formats for the text. The one most often referred to is simply the standard texts. There is also a secondary text where the Old Testament text is changed to harmonize better with the Gospel text.In Feasting on the Word, Year A and the first half of Year B focus on the standard texts. The second half of year B and Year C all use the alternative texts.I have found these to be an excellent resource in fully understanding the text, and particularly appreciate the pastoral focus. In a way it is like listening to four different sermons on the text as you read through. Whenever possible, I have been purchasing the Kindle version, since the regular hardcover edition is in small print.

This series is the very best of Bible study helps for anyone who is interested in the scriptures. Based on the lectionary calendar, it is excellent for both group and solo study, and sermon preparation.If any of this set of books were lost, I would replace them immediately. This volume is my first try at study in the Kindle format. I think I'm going to like it, as I read each week's section in full, highlighting helpful texts. Then, I study my highlights carefully, and soon begin to write. Being an old codger, I still prefer paper books, but this set doesn't add any weight or bulk to my Kindle, so I can work anywhere I happen to be.I would like a full-size keyboard for the Kindle, to keep in my glove compartment or saddlebags; thay would improve the already great experience of owning a Kindle

Love these commentaries and kindle version shows well. Only problem is that the Year A,B,C and Volume number are near impossible to read on the cover view which makes finding which one you need quite the annoying task.

This is a fantastic resource for lectionary preachers. I love the combination of theological, exegetical, pastoral, and homiletical perspectives for each passage. Really great "one stop shop" for preachers who use the Revised Common Lectionary.

Very good reading and insights. Would recommend to ministers who follow the lectionary.

One of my “go to” resources for preaching. On my phone no less!!

This is an excellent Lectionary resource for any minister; great scholarship. It explores the scriptures from many angles,with many authors and will provide more than ample inspiration for some great sermons. I wish a resource of this nature had been available during my 'active' ministry. I bought a copy for two minister friends of mine first; then this copy for myself even though I'm retired. It is probably more than the average Layperson would be seeking; but a full cup for those who want more. I purchased this item through Amazon.

I began using Feasting on the Word a year ago and each volume continues to deliver excellence. Each perspective helps give me something to chew on, it helps jump-start some great ideas to preach on, and I end up knowing so much more about the selected passage than I did before. Plus, God definitely speaks to me through the whole process. Though it is designed to help pastors coordinate their efforts with liturgy preparation, I'm Baptist and I find it to be very compatible with my preaching efforts. I highly recommend Feasting on the Word for any pastor who wants a quick and yet thorough discection of God's word to aid in preaching preparation.

I like this book as it clearly lays out the purpose of Adonai's Feasts listed in Leviticus 23. It shows why they were given and what was their purpose. The diagram of the feasts is the best I have seen. I recommend this book to anyone who has an honest desire to understand the Biblical Feasts. Though Chumney does include Jewish traditions, I am grateful that he calls it out. The problem with other books on this same subject is the reader is left to wonder if the what the writer is saying proceeds from the Bible or from the traditions of man. this book is different because in almost every case Chumney clearly delineates the source from which he is getting his material. This then leaves the reader in a strong position to discern whether he agrees or disagrees with the material presented. One can reference and check if the insights about the Passover truly come from the Bible. If so then you can agree and feel confident you are on Scriptural foundations. I recommend this book to anyone, Jew or Gentile, who wants to understand the Moeds (the Feasts) of the Lord...such as Passover. What was it? Why was it established by G-d? What is its purpose? is the Passover prophetic regarding the Messiah's life, death, burial and resurrection per Isaiah 53? Is it relevent for today for both Jew and Gentile? Those questions are answered.

Nearly twenty years ago, I stumbled upon a single copy of this amazing book in a local area Christian bookstore and was immediately drawn to it's intriguing title. I had never heard of the "Feasts of Messiah"! I continue to devour the riches of Biblical understanding as I read and re-read it repeatedly - underlining pertinent statements of Chumney's - all biblically based - and adding my own thoughts! So much so, in fact, I have had to purchase additional copies over the years of "wear and tear" (just as I did with this most recent purchase)! Chumney opened new doors of study for me that continue to strengthen and enrich my years of further study. As a pastor and teacher, I continue to pass on these understandings wherever I am appointed to serve, for Chumney's work opened truths of the whole Bible to me that I had never been taught before in my previous decades as a Christian.

If youre hesitant to buy this, DON'T be. It is by far one of the funniest books I have ever read in my life. I did, in fact, read the trilogy and while its not GOOD, it's a guilty pleasure series that you cant put down. This parody is comedic genius. The writing is meant to be just as bad as the trilogy, and Fanny Merkin (😂) succeeds. Everything about this book is ridiculous and so out there that I couldnt stop laughing. Even after i finished the book, I went out into the kitchen to make lunch, I was still giggling. Just thinking about some of the quotes now and Im almost in tears. Its a super quick read, but it's a book I could see myself reading on a short flight.I have a lineup of 4 people waiting to read this at work haha Ive hyped it up so much. Well worth the price and Im so happy I got it paperback.

In a blatant satire of EL James’s Fifty Shades trilogy, clueless college student and Wal-Mart employee Anna Steal takes on her roommate’s journalism assignment and interviews Earl Grey, a seductive billionaire with odd sexual appetites. The two of them get romantically involved when Earl stalks Anna everywhere she goes and convinces her to join in on his shameful endeavors. He is particularly fond of BDSM (Bards, Dragons, Sorcery, and Magick), a role-playing game for the bedroom. Can Anna accept Earl for who he is and…okay, that’s enough. This is some ridiculous stuff right here.Anybody who had the misfortune of reading the Fifty Shades books can appreciate how accurate of a parody this is. Instead of biting her lips, Anna Steal picks her nose. Instead of just ropes and duct tape, Earl Grey also buys a hacksaw from Wal-Mart, which makes Anna believe he’s the second coming of Dexter. The awful descriptions from the original are exaggerated to the extreme in this parody. Hell, instead of an “inner goddess”, Anna has an “inner guidette”, which was no doubt taken from her roommate’s binge watching of corny reality shows like The Jersey Shore. Everything, and I do mean everything, about this book is so out of whack that it’ll make you laugh from page to page. If Weird Al Yankovich wrote erotica, it would be in the form of Fifty Shames of Earl Grey.Speaking of ridiculousness, it’s common knowledge by now that Fifty Shades of Grey is Twilight fan fiction. The author hammed up those Twilight references all throughout the book. Earl Grey is the perfect caricature of Edward Cullen with how “wicked” his smile is, how “beautiful and sparkly” he is, and how he’s perfect in every way both physically and financially, which is why he buys businesses left and right just for the sake of stalking Anna. Earl even has a fierce rival in Anna’s friend Jin, a Brony who could be a stand-in for Jacob Black due to how muscle-bound he looks in his tight clothing. Anna Steal is also a stand-in for Bella Swan due to how ditzy and plain she really is. I haven’t read the Twilight books, but I know enough about them to see the references from a mile away. I laughed my head off at them just the same.As someone who lost a cat to lung cancer around the time I read this, I needed the laughs. It’s a reminder not to take life too seriously and that it’s good to unplug every now and then. Sure, I’ll always have books that became my favorites because of how they ripped my heart to shreds. If that’s the case, then Fifty Shames of Earl Grey was the glue that pieced it together again. Thank you, Fanny Merkin, for all the laughs you gave me. You deserve a passing grade!

As someone who has no intention of reading the 50 Shades franchise, I found this book pretty hysterical. Actually, I've read the last 20 pages of the first 50 Shades book. So I don't really know that much about the franchise except what I've seen in popular culture. The author is able to poke fun at the books specifically, but also encompasses tons of pop culture and romance-novel-culture too.I traded off reading this book and a regular romance novel at the same time and I found it sort-of hard to go between the two. This book pokes fun at everything and when I'd go back to the other book, I'd have to remind myself that these romance phrases are meant to be more serious now.Anna was mostly, completely stupid. She knows almost nothing about life and her internal monologue is ludicrous. "I gaze into his gazing eyes gazingly like a gazelle gazing into another gazelle's gazing gaze." Part of poking fun and very funny to read.But what I loved more was some of the "more serious" silliness. Kissing after eating: "Perhaps we shouldn't have started kissing so soon after eating. Your mouth tastes like you ate an entire garlic bulb." When Anna has some stinky feet: "'I love your scent, Anna' he says, placing his noise an inch away from my toes and inhaling deeply. His eyes grow wide with surprise. 'But perhaps, I shall start with your knees. Good idea.'" You find that in romance novels so often; that people never smell stinky or anything. It's just so funny and laugh out loud to have someone poke fun at that. But that was definitely the hard part alternating with a "serious" romance novel.If you remember from the first 50 Shades book, the last little bit is the big spanking scene. This book takes that scene and makes it completely hysterical. One of the times that Anna seemed totally real and intelligent. Instead of being dark and heavy, this one completely turns it around and gives everyone the silly absolution they need.Bottom line, you can't go into this book expecting a serious take on 50 Shades. It's a silly book, meant to make you laugh and be totally over-the-top insane. I'd compare this book a little bit to the Scary Movie franchise, but it also reminded me a lot of Douglas Adams. Will I buy the second book in this parody series? Maybe, but probably not for full price.

Clever! I thought the first book in the actual series was so bad that I couldn’t finish. This parody was so cleverly done, I almost didn’t finish it either. The laughs snuck up on my with their blatant subtlety. A little sexual content, a lot of inane chatter and outrageously stupid inner monologues. Nice parody all in all.

Much more entertaining than the actual book. It took all of the stupidity in the book and made it funny. You do not need to read the actual 50 shades to understand this. Just read all of the 1 star reviews on amazon to get filled in on the lame characters, boring sex and lousy plot. But wait i forgot there are thousands of 1 star reviews, you wont have time to read them all so just read a few. If you feel there is more you are missing believe me there is not, the reviews will be enough info to make 50 Shames a funny read. All of the teenage girls and desperate housewives liked 50 shades as much as the Twilight movies. This should be enough warning to just read this parody and skip the actual book.

To all the negative reviewers Get outta here!!! I'm a huge Disneyland fanatic I've been an annual pass holder multiple times been to Disneyland AT LEAST a hundred times..sure I knew a lot of the "Did you know" answers but there's a lot I didnt know..and as for the scavenger hunt portion...I honestly would have not noticed a lot of these fun finds! I'm going to Disneyland again next week and cannot wait to use this book!! Must BUY

I didn't find this to be all that fun or informing. Maybe I've been to Disneyland enough to know these but it would be fun for a first timer.

Very difficult things.... mostly for adults. Not for small children.

Author David Almond grew up in the northeastern English town of Felling-on-Tyne. It was there he attended school and church, played football and played with friends, there that the stories of his family, community and religion became the foundation of his many highly acclaimed and much beloved books. In HALF A CREATURE FROM THE SEA, he collects eight short stories set in and around Felling, many quite autobiographical, and explains the truths behind the mysteries they often contain. The result is a book that finely balances the real and the possible, memory and myth, believing and understanding.The first story, “Slog's Dad,” sets the scene with its blend of heart-breaking realism and hopeful fantasy. In it, the young narrator Davie and his friend Slog are walking through town when they see a poor and worn man sitting on a bench. Immediately, Slog claims it's his father, Joe Mickley, though he died of an illness a series of amputations couldn't stall. Joe's last words to his son were “watch for me in the spring,” and so Slog is convinced the man on the bench, even though he looks different, must be him, come to visit his boy one last time. Davie is rightly skeptical, but when the man on the bench seems to know about Slog's family and claims to be “transfigured,” the truth of his identity seems more uncertain. Most important, though, is Slog's total belief and joy at having talked with his father once again. Faith and magic are also found in “When God Came to Cathleen's Garden.” On a winter day, Davie finds himself bored and without the company of his best friends. Then two of his sisters pull him outside to share a secret with him: God is sitting by the fish pond in Cathleen Kelly's garden. The three siblings join Cathleen, who asks a strange man sitting in the snow to return her dead dog, Jasper, to her. Whether or not the man proves to be God, the story does offer Cathleen, and readers, a miracle to ponder.Many of the tales in HALF A CREATURE FROM THE SEA have similar elements: death, ghosts, local eccentrics, the shadow of the Catholic church. “May Malone” combines all those elements as it introduces Norman Trench, “ten or eleven at the time,” who comes to know the town's most notorious woman, May Malone, who is rumored to live with a monster, possibly the son of her union with Satan. “Harry Miller's Run” is the melancholy and wonderful story of a dying man sharing the memory of his best day. In “Half a Creature from the Sea,” Almond gives readers the story of a young girl trying to understand her origins and uniqueness. Her mother offers her the idea that her father was a beautiful sea creature who came to land but had to return, leaving his daughter with some of his mysterious and fantastical qualities.Each story is a treasure. Each explores powerful ideas but is written in Almond's strange, evocative and lovely style, employing the vernacular of his hometown. This book is worth more than 3 stars, but in light of all the 5-star reviews (written by young bloggers, probably) I find myself compelled to provide a counterpoint. For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards is a fun stream-of-consciousness roller coaster ride through the rants and raves of a Jesus-loving, preacher's wife and mother-of-5, sprinkled with a little minor celebrity glitz. It is, therefore, not what I expected.The book is truly funny, easy to read in small snatches and occasionally makes a great point of practical theology. (“If you can make a pot of chili and use a cell phone, then you can create community.” Or, “Anytime the rich and poor combine, we should listen to whoever has the least power.”) However, it is not what I expected because the title suckered me. I thought it was going to be a straight-up education about grace applied to ourselves primarily and others secondarily, something we all sorely need, whether we are coming from the get-your-life-in-line end of the spectrum or the let-it-all-hang-out end. But it's not. After the wonderful Introduction, grace is never directly addressed again, and there are whole chapters which don't even use the word. There IS a chapter on fashion, multiple chapters addressing pet peeves, Jen's life in Facebook posts and several intricate recipes. Yes, there are a couple more serious chapters about missions (seemingly borrowed from When Helping Hurts) and church leaders, but there is approximately one Bible reference (ok, I found three more in the second-to-last, confusing chapter encouraging women to lead more) and for a book touting grace, I felt kind of ragged on a few times.I could be the author's mother (if I'd had a couple rough and/or promiscuous teen years), so there's one other thing I've got to say: sometimes this good-hearted lady knows not of what she speaks. By her own admission she hasn't been through a lot of hardships. She has a loving pastor-husband, five great kids who are still at home, and she and her friends cheer on one another's published books, released CD's and popular podcasts. Talk to me again when there's only one of you working on your marriage, when your grown child has embraced atheism, when you've had a significant part of your body disfigured, or when your best friend or your dreams have died a slow death. Then you can write a serious book aimed at lifting burdens, explaining modern dilemmas or applying grace to self-condemnation. Until then, please adhere to truth in advertising by subtitling your book: Funny Blogs about Being a Middle-aged Christian Mom.Please buy this book (seriously, do) if you want to read some light yet inspiring Christian humor. Just don't be fooled by the title like I was. And, Jen, when you decide to write the book you promised in the Introduction, I'll stand in line for it.

Hatmaker is hilarious, peppering jokes between tear jerker odes to her loved ones, community, and Jesus. The chapter about "Callings" by itself makes it worth it to get the book. She also fills an important hole in common Christian writing - she talks about grace, but also addresses the need for people to leave abusive and toxic relationships. She also frankly addresses modern problems in the church, such as homophobia, science-aversion, and unnecessary dogmatism. It's a good book! I have to whine about something though. I was personally quite miffed by the bits on cooking. She has a little speel about how "we" do have time to cook healthy meals, mixed in with a mockery of advertisements for fast food and packaged food. Then she follows it up with a recipe that requires two hours in the oven. I remembered that Hatmaker does not work a nine to five job like most of us and, suddenly, that comment made sense. If I tried that, husband and I would be eating dinner at 8:45 P.M. Correction, I would be crying from hunger by 7:15 P.M. and husband would have bought us burgers by 7:20 P.M. I was very much enjoying the book but was very disheartened by the way she talked about food as some kind of relationship glue. I grew up with and live with people who just don't care that much about food - investing extra time and money into food would mean disappointment and a slimmer budget for me. I know because I've tried; I had to change my standards about food to "Well, they are easily pleased. That's a blessing." I think I was so bothered by the comments because the rest of the book is such a good representation of finding acceptance and satisfaction. Cooking is such a sore subject for so many women and I wish Hatmaker had been a little gentler with it. Anyway, she is a good writer and the book is encouraging and thoughtful on the whole.

The best of Jen Hatmaker to date, in my opinion. She makes me laugh so hard, I cry. Her stories are so real and encouraging. Her approach to loving her family, friends, and the disenfranchised people around her is what I believe God expects from all Christ followers. Her approach is Grace based, which is where God has been leading me to focus. After 40 years as a Southern Baptist, married to a minister, the daughter of a staff member, and myself a pianist/organist, the judgmental, political leanings of the denomination has become more and more disgusting to me. Jen's thoughts and scripture references help me pray through what path God is leading me down as I try to love people unconditionally.

This book is more a monologue of Jen Hatmaker's life. A whole chapter devoted to whether leggings are pants? I quit half way through. This wasn't about enriching my relationship with the Lord as much as stand up comedy from her life. Disappointed.

Save your money! This book is a mere compilation of Jenn Hatmakers opinions on other Christians, while using quick witted and back handed one liners. It's ALL OVER THE PLACE. Definitely not a study or anything. The title is misleading, it's not about finding grace at all! If you want my copy, feel free to reach out, I'm looking to get rid of mine, or perhaps I'll just toss it.
