My wife and I read The Year 1,000 by this (British I think) author, and loved it, so we looked for more of his works. Lacey writes with a straightforward, clear and entertaining style. This is a right-down-the-middle history of Saudi Arabia, with great details about the rise of Sunni jihad terrorism, Wahhabism, Al Qaeda and Bin Laden. It explores the struggle between Islamic fundamentalists and modernists in Saudi Arabia. This is neither a conservative nor a liberal book; Lacey says both positive and negative things about George Bush when he feels it is called for. He has lived in the Kingdom for many years, and obviously has an affection for the Saudis--but not all of them, and his views are not blinded by that. This is an essential book for understanding both the Middle East and the terrorist threat we are dealing with. I highly recommend it. Inshallah you will read it.Robert A. HallAuthor: "The Coming Collapse of the American Republic."

Lacey has produced a very interesting history of Saudi Arabia (and by extend the House of Saud) from circa 1979 to 2009. He has managed to balance a chronological history of events in those tumultuous 30 years whilst also exploring themes such as the appeasement of religious in the wake of the 1979 storming of the Grand Mosque, modernisation, interaction with the West and the status of the minority Shia community.Whilst Lacey has included some small amount of social commentary, ie a brief discussion of same sex lesbian relationships, rape, the social repression of Saudi society the book is very much in the Great Man school of history so dont buy this book if your looking for a man on the street view of Saudi society. Otherwise it is excellent.I dont know if Lacey will live long enough to produce a trilogy but it is also worth mentioning that this book will be interesting to pick up in 20 years to see if some of the factors Lacey identifies have come to fruition. For example he talks about King Abdullah taking a strategic decision to seek other allies to the United States in 2004 in the wake of the invasion of Iraq. It will be interesting to see how this develops over the decades ahead and how prescient Lacey has been on this score and others.

I have been living in Saudi Arabia for a year now and I purchased this book to try and gain a better understanding of the people and the country. Unfortunately, most of the books on offer are written by expats and thus you will not get a balanced perspective of this exceptionally enigmatic country. Saying that though, Robert Lacey, has researched this subject very well and was granted privileged access to a number of subjects. He has put together a fantastic personal insight. I believe that the book is banned out here. Speak to any of the expats though and they will tell you that this is the definitive work on the country. I recommend this to any person travelling out to KSA, be it for business or to relocate. Just bear in mind that the locals will have a very different view surrounding many of the issues raised by Lacey.

Sprawling, conflicted and utterly fascinating. Like the mysterious country it aims to comprehend. As someone who has spent some time in the Kingdom, I can say that the book deals very carefully, fairly and skillfully with the many complex forces at work in Saudi. It is a sober but hopeful vision of a country that has so much to offer the world...if only it could get out of its own way.

This is a well written and thorough history of the Saudi kingdom and the royal family. The reader gets a full picture of Saudi domestic politics as well as the personalities of the various family members. This book enables the reader to understand why the Saudis act, react or refuse on an international level. The events of 9/11, the Gulf Wars, other Arab states, the Palestinians, and the Saudi relationship with the west, particularly America, are highlighted. King Abdullah is now 89 years old. It is worth reading this book knowing that Saudi Arabia will continue to be a powerful influence in that part of the world.

Like Robert Lacey's first book on Saudi Arabia, Inside the Kingdom is a masterpiece of style, substance, and critical reporting with cultural empathy. One of our best writers of living history.

This is a very well researched and written account of the major events that have taken place in the Kingdom over the past 30 years. The description of the ruling Al-Saud family is very good and the portraits of the individual members are, in my opinion, very acurate. The rise of Osama bin Laden is very well accurately portrayed and the author has been prolific in his sources, including personal interviews. As a resident of Saudi Arabia, many of the characters are well know to me and I have met a few of them - this, of course, does a lot to bring the book to life for me. Having said that, I would not hesitate in recommending this as an introduction and explanation to what is currently going on in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. The upheaval in Libya, Bahrain, Egypt etc becomes a lot clearer after reading books such as this.Thououghly recommended if you have any interest in the region.

This book takes on the mass of contradictions that are the Kingdom of Arabia, and the modern world of the Islam. The author has lived in the kingdom, and so writes from personal observation rather from abstract academic study. It is a real eye opener! Today, when the US news media shows us the world only as it has immediately and directly affected the US, this book provides the background for the 'why' and 'how' of this powerful and most influential of Muslem countries.

In the Shadow of Denali: The Heart of Alaska, Book One by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is a fiction book about a young woman who joins her father in the Alaskan frontier. She takes a job in a hotel as a cooking assistant while her father assumes some power and prestige. An unexpected turn of events for her father leads to some mystery and intrigue even as she finds some romantic interest. This book has historic facts interwoven into the story of the characters, which makes it more believable and interesting to read than some fiction books that are not so accurate. This book was an easy read and the characters are well-developed. It seems like a good start to what will be a series.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Rating 5 out of 5 stars.Tracie Peterson is the bestselling, award-winning author of more than one hundred books. A popular speaker, she's shared at more than 2,000 venues across the country.1917 Denali, Alaska. Frank Irving & Henry Brennan ran a supply store for mountaineers out of Seattle, WA. They sell tents, rope and climbing gear. They've come to Alaska to climb Mount McKinley which later became Denali. John Ivanoff is their guide who has a lot of experience in climbing this mountain. After much preparation and climbing, they reach the peak . A snowstorm is beginning on their descent down Mt. McKinley.July 1923 Curry, Alaska. Cassidy Ivanoff is at the Curry Hotel. The hotel is midway between Seward and Fairbanks and is a good place to stop between towns on the railroad. Cassidy signed on to be a cook in the kitchen of the new hotel. Cassidy is John Ivanoff's daughter. They are a family of strong faith in the Lord. John is the recreational guide for the hotel.Allan Brennan boarded the train to Alaska. He is fascinated by the true beauty of Alaska that his father Henry had only told him about. John Ivanoff boarded the train later on and they had a lively discussion about the railroad and climbing in Alaska.Cassidy showed Allan around the Curry hotel. He held her hand for a moment and she felt an instant attraction to him. Thomas is a 17-year-old young man who John has chosen to help him with his next recreational outing.Allan is feeling discord with John Irving over something that happened in his past. Cassidy and Allan go out on a nature hike together. The next day the President Warren G. Harding and his delegation come to stay at the Curry Hotel. Cassidy is baking a beautiful Baked Alaska for their dessert.Cassidy longed to be like Daniel in the Bible. He went to the lion's den and yet still remained strong in God's word. Will the mystery between John Irving and Allan Brennan be solved?Allan finds himself daydreaming lots about Cassidy.John and Allan are planning a new climb up Denali. 14 September 1923. John and Allan begin their journey up Denali. As they near 10 thousand feet up a blizzard is heading in. Will Cassidy get to see Allan and her father again?I loved reading this book. It brings you close to nature and to God. And it is filled with Alaskan adventure.#book #review #blog #traciepeterson #kimberleywoodhouse

This book had great potential but when it came to what should be the really exciting parts (i.e. love interests, villain meeting his comeuppance) it fall very, very flat. Honestly, I couldn't believe it. I had every reason to believe these parts of the book would be dramatic and satisfying, but no! It was completely left up to the reader to imagine what transpired. I don't want to be a spoiler, but all the details of what took place on the mountain in September that really mattered didn't allow the reader to be a part of it. As a reader, I want to read the play-by-play as it's happening. In this book, the play-by-play- the real action and resolving of the conflict- is told more as an after thought. Really disappointing when it could have been so gripping. As a reader, I love to feel like I'm witnessing the exciting parts of a story, but in this book, it was more like reading the article of what happened in the back pages of a newspaper.

Kim Woodhouse and Tracie Peterson, both highly accomplished writers with successful works to their credit including, among others, Tracie Peterson’s works in series--Heirs of Montana and Alaskan Quest--and Kim Woodhouse’s novels, co-authored with Kim's daughter Kayla--No Safe Haven and Race Against time--have teamed up to produce a fine introductory novel to their Heart of Alaska series. The fascinating history of the novel’s primary setting, Curry, Alaska and its most noteworthy feature, the renowned Curry Hotel, provides the setting where most of the story occurs. Care has been taken to preserve the area’s historical integrity and personality in the early twentieth century. Where assumptions are made and liberties taken with the specifics of the hotel and surroundings for the sake of a comfortable flow in the narrative they are spelled out in the authors’ notes at the end.Biblical principles are, for the most part, interwoven with the narrative rather than spelled out in conversations, which results in a natural tone in dialogue rather than preachy homilies. To a large extent the story features the influence of Cassidy’s pure and honest heart upon people disillusioned by past losses and pain, drawing out the human capacity to turn from doubt to faith.Readers will enjoy the passages about the beauty and majesty of Mount Denali which - although I have never seen it personally - can appreciate, having lived within view of the beautiful, though smaller, mountains of Colorado for most of my life. Details both of cooking gourmet foods and of mountaineering (although both are foreign to me) give interest and credence to the story. There is a romantic thread, and it develops naturally and unforced, not being itself the dominant story.Cassidy, the principal character, is a delightful person, generous with acceptance and forgiveness, defending the downtrodden and disadvantaged, more precious and tender because her name, personality and character are based on the real Cassidy Faith Hale, a 15-year-old girl who died as the result of a vehicle/pedestrian accident in Holyoke, Colorado in 2015. The novel is dedicated to Cassidy in a touching tribute. Thomas, a gentle and lovable soul, eager to please others but often seeming to fail on account of being accident-prone, exhibits a Christlike spirit, loving even after romantic feelings are not reciprocated by the object of his affection. Mrs. Johnson, a woman with a harsh manner and a golden heart, carries wounds from past tragedy and proves to be a challenge to Cassidy’s efforts to befriend her and share her faith. Allan, the counterpart to Cassidy in the romantic thread, has a major part in solving the years-old mystery of his father’s death. Sinister intentions of Frank are evident from the first page, laying the foundation for the suspenseful final chapters and the climactic conclusion. Not least is a very attractive cover for the book, with Cassidy in the foreground with Denali behind her, above a photo of now-defunct Curry Hotel. In the Shadow of Denali is a great beginning to a promising series.

#65,030 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This beginner's method book, while providing fun activities and appropriately levelled songs, contains numerous errors, typos, and even pictures of the wrong instrument! This is a ukulele book and my students love pointing out the pictures of guitars that the editor somehow missed. Some words are in bold that shouldn't be, some chords are wrong. Easy enough for me to make the adjustments as I go along and point them out to my students, but a new edition should definitely come out with some editing.

Great book for kids. Only teaches C,F,G7,Am chords but the songs are good and the instruction is great. My 7 year old daughter has read the whole book, pretty much taught herself chords from it, and loves playing the songs.

This is a well made product and is standing up nicely to my 4 year old and even when it gets into the hands of my 1 year old. It is so fun hearing my son play songs and sing. It is a good fit for him and easy to use and hold.

I bought this for my 6 year old daughter who is just learning the okay the uke. It is simple and easy for both my daughter and me to understand. Great beginner book.

This book is no substitute for a teacher or class. My six year-old wasn't getting anywhere with this book, so we started her with a private instructor. Maybe older kids would have better luck.

This is a fun easy book to learn the ukulele with. When it comes to learning up and down strokes and singing along while you play it couldn’t get any easier than the way this book teaches it. I have bought three books so far so yes I would recommend it to any beginner. Got to start somewhere

A fine presentation of playing the ukulele for kids and for Me. Both my granddaughter and I enjoy it and refer back to it again and again. Love the songs!

This book is definitely for kids lol if I could have seen the songs in it before I bought it I wouldn't have.
