Hollywood's support for the war effort is well-known, but less well-known is the organized response of the periodical press. As part of The United We Stand campaign, conceived by Hearst publicist Paul MacNamara to support eh war effort (and to sell magazines), roughly 500 magazines featured the U.S. flag on their covers in July 1942. Peter Kreitler's book, seven inches tall and five and one-half inches wide, is a small gem that features more than 100 of his collection's 200 United We Stand magazine covers. Aside from the short introduction, a few inserts and the index, the book has no other text. Each magazine cover is allowed to speak for itself, which is, after all, exactly how magazine covers are intended to work. Certainly, this book has current interest given the renewed emphasis on the World War II generation and the patriotic displays of the flag (even the use of the slogan, United We Stand ) in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. However, this book has qualities that go beyond these points. The contemporary reader, as if transported to a newsstand in the gold age of the magazine, becomes engrossed in an experience that has its own integrity aside form surveying the magazines many and varied interpretations of the flag. It is fascinating to examine the 1942 covers of industry standards like Time, The New Yorker and Vogue, among others, and compare them to today s. Fantastic comic book covers, like Master Comics, Looney Toons and Captain Marvell to name a few, jump out at the reader. Perhaps most fascinating, sometimes most poignant, are the covers of long-lost magazines indicative of another era, Country Gentleman, Indian Motorcycle News, and Quiz Kid Magazine are a few of the many. No less engaging is discovering names like H.L. Mencken, T.S. Eliot and E.B. White among the contributors listed on the covers. Appropriately enough, Kreitling's magazine collection has come to the attention of the Smithsonian Institute, which will exhibit nearly 100 of them from March 22 through October 28 in the National Museum of American History. Planned in the spring of 2001 as an exhibit to mark the 60th anniversary of the United We Stand campaign, the events of September 11 have since imbued this exhibition with a significance that transcends its original intent. Appropriately, a portion of the proceeds for this book will be donated to the American Red Cross. Both Delivered Fast ANd just what I was looking for.

After the attack on Pear Harbor, Paul MacNamara, a PR man for Hearst magazines, had a clever idea. On July four of 1942 why not get the Nation's major magazines and comics to show their patriotism (and sell more copies) by printing Old Glory on their covers. Nearly three hundred titles joined in and just over a hundred of them are shown in this lovely book.The covers are from the author's collection and it is a pity that there are not more shown. Considering that most of the covers show a flag flying in the wind it is interesting to see how the magazine's designers handled the cover layout, some titles (Modern Industry page 86) used a flat design flag and still produced an eye-catching cover.I would not normally mention cutting up a book but many of the covers that have a dominant flag look so nice that they would really look good mounted on a colored background and framed. They are mostly four by five inches. Maybe something to do for this years July four!

This little book reviews many covers of major US magazines from July 1942 which carried the US flag celebrating the first Independence Day after Pearl Harbor. The patriotism of that wartime era is eerily reminiscent of the wave of patriotism reaching across our Nation after 11 September. I would hope that in July 2002 we will see a similar expression of national unity. God bless America!

The author appears to discuss much of the information by reflecting both sides of the story. So far so good. However in the critical section about the benefits of statins, he makes statements that are easily disproven. He states:" Statins are largely responsible for cutting American's death rate from heart disease by 50%....between 1980 and 2000..." Later he states that:" American's diet did not become more healthful during this time...." Later in the book he shows a graph which indicates that statin use was minuscule for the period 1988-1994 for men and women aged 45-64 with no data for older groups.The facts do not support his claim at all. Cigarette smoking (a proven factor in heart disease) peaked in America around 1962 and heart disease dropped continuously as smoking was reduced, albeit with a time lag. So the trend of decreasing heart disease was in place long before statins became fashionable in the 1990's. Further he claims that the statins were responsible for the drop in the 1980's when, by his own figures, statins were not widely used. If you peruse the statistics of the Department for agriculture "Nutrient components of the US food supply, 1909-1999" (available from Amazon) you will notice that the diet of Americans became dramatically more healthful from 1970-79 to 1990-99. Food content of carbs and fiber increased, saturated fat and cholesterol decreased and large increases were noted for content of iron, vitamin E, carotenes, vitamins B2, B3 and B9. (B12 decreased). These figures understate the improvement as nutrient supplements became ubiquitous. Even though more calories were consumed, which may well become a problem in the future, the food quality has improved, partially due to food fortification. Further he gives no credit to many other factors such as ever improving emergency treatments of heart attacks.On the end of the book you are no wiser about whether you personally should take statins, but the exaggerated claim above may convince you that statins are a miracle indeed.

Statins: Miraculous or Misguided? by Mark Estren, Ph.D., a medical writer is intended for the public, not physicians although, I was surprised by how much data Dr. Estren provides. While Statins reads easily it also contains a lot of scientific data and is organized in sections. So often, physicians simply prescribe statins for their patients without always informing them of dangerous side effects including chronic and life threatening ones. Many people need lifestyle changes in diet, sleep and exercise that might prevent the *need* for statin use. There are also people who already have vascular conditions and hereditary factors that put them at much higher risk for developing fatal complications. Deciding to take a statin and how it affects one's health is much more complex. Dr. Estren provides an easy read of material about the pros and cons of taking statins. Most Internet sites are biased in their material presented about statins. This is a highly individual decision. This book would make an excellent resource in a physician's office or as a hand out to patients so they can work with their physician to make the best decision. The entire point is that statins are not for everyone but, in some cases they can be life saving.

Some writers call these drugs, such as Lipitor, close to “miraculous”--almost wanting to put them in the water supply for everyone’s benefit. Others see them as “misguided,” and would prefer a more natural approach that doesn't involve a lifetime of taking a pill with who-knows-what adverse side effects.This book is a balanced guide to sorting out our options. The author fairly lays out the case for each side. He shows us in clear and simple terms just what statins are and how statins work to control the levels of cholesterol in our body.Some doctors dismiss the use of statins as they are currently prescribed. The author tells us why. Some countries have similar cholesterol levels to ours...but very different heart disease rates. Why would that be? When 25% of Americans 45 and older are on a drug to control a condition that hardly occurs in some parts of the world, we have to ask: If having high cholesterol is, for the most part, a lifestyle-induced problem, wouldn't it be healthier to focus on a lifestyle-centered solution? Who is really behind the push to get even more of the population on board? (Hint: Who would profit financially?)Is having a high cholesterol reading actually a sign that a person is likely to die earlier than he should? A number of researchers would disagree. Some studies show that those taking statins, while having fewer heart attacks, actually have a higher death rate compared to those not taking statins. I would like to have seen this addressed by the author.I’m giving the book a high rating. It gives information we need to make informed decisions about our own health care. It’s quite readable, making a complicated subject more understandable.
