R. Jared Staudt is a teacher, writer, and speaker committed to helping others enter into the living and vibrant tradition of Catholic culture. He serves as Director of Formation for the Archdiocese of Denver and teaches at the Augustine Institute. He holds a PhD in systematic theology from Ave Maria University and is a Benedictine oblate. He and his wife Anne have six children.

Beer proves that God loves us and wants us to be happy, and Jared's story telling helps make that abundantly clear. Read this if you want to know more about beer, especially about its Christian roots. I love the stories about breweries through the centuries, saints with beer connections and descriptions of monastic brews--I will be creating a "beer bucket list" for sure. In a modern context, the book provides a lot to think about regarding temperance, sustainability and corporate responsibility. Highly recommended for both thinkers and drinkers.
Excellent book, very well thought-out and prepared. Also very personal, so very readable. Enjoyable in its historical-cultural qualities as well as the anecdotal aspects. Recommended for all Catholics interested in beer.

In this wonderful book, Dr. Staudt places the beer we all know and love into its bountiful historical, cultural and theological context, especially how the monks who pioneered brewing as we know it today also have a lot to teach us about life and faith and family as well, especially as we need them today. Every important topic is handled: the history and spirituality of beer, our debt to the monastic tradition, descriptions of the world finest brews and where to find them, wholesome conviviality, the art of home brewing, the virtue of temperance, 're-fermenting' a consumerist society, and how our current beer Renaissance in America can be a better appreciated and utilized cultural ingredient to further the New Evangelization.
Jared Staudt's "Beer Option" is an outstanding blend of history, theology, and practical matters. I particularly liked his section on the decline and fall of Catholic brewing and his reflections on beer versus marijuana. The book will having you alternating between craving genuine Catholic culture and craving a good beer.
