From the Back Cover

cov•e•nant (n): A binding agreement; a compact; a promiseSince biblical times covenants have been a part of everyday life. Simply put, they are promises, agreements, or contracts. But how do they translate into faith and the reading of Scripture? Are covenants merely elements of a narrative? Or do they represent something more? And what are the eternal implications of "cutting" a covenant with God?In Introducing Covenant Theology, author Michael Horton unwinds the intricacies of crucial covenant concepts, showing how they provide a significant organizational structure for all of Scripture. They give us a context in which to understand the voices and message of the biblical narrative. They provide life with a goal and history with a meaning.Whether you're a pastor, ministry leader, or layperson, Introducing Covenant Theology will give you a new understanding of covenants and covenant theology, providing a framework for an important theological concept."A masterful survey of the covenantal frame of God's self-disclosure in Scripture. For serious students it is a winner."--J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College"A rigorous and articulate defense of a traditional view of covenant theology. Horton's federalist emphasis gleans from well-established Reformed writers while adding his own highly readable and insightful commentary."--Bryan Chapell, president, Covenant Theological Seminary"Horton has brought covenant theology to life in a way which engages modern thought and appeals to contemporary students and pastors alike. His book is a clear guide to an essential topic."--Gerald Bray, research professor, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University

Horton's small diatribe on Covenant Theology is easy to understand. Whereas most volumes on Covenant Theology are thick and rely on people smarter than myself, specifically the Puritans. Yes, Horton does work with the Puritans and the Reformers, but this is actually a discussion about Biblical texts, rather than Church history. It shows that through the Old Testament Covenants and the New Covenant, the story of redemption is the story of God's soverignty and of the relationship between God and His people.

I think this is a great introductory text to covenant theology. It should be accessible to anyone with a cursory knowledge of reformed Christian doctrine, and Horton's writing style is very smooth, less stilted and academic than some of the other big-name books on this topic (e.g., Vos, Robertson). I don't have any substantial gripes with the book's substantive content - although I don't think I fully buy his explanation of a third covenant, the "Covenant of Redemption." But he gives equal time to those who would disagree with him on that subject, and I'm inclined to think it's just a matter of differing terminology. I have only a couple of minor critiques.First, I think that the book would have worked better if it had included a chapter at the beginning that clearly defines terms and provides an overall structure of covenant theology. Throughout the first three to four chapters, there are many terms used that readers with only a cursory knowledge of covenant theology will not understand. More than that, I think a roadmap of the structure of the covenants would have been useful from the outset. If he had more clearly set out his overarching Covenants of Redemption, Works, Grace from the start, along with the various sub-covenants under each larger theme, it would have made for easier sledding at the beginning. That being said, it all becomes clear by the fourth chapter or so. I just think it's a misstep for a book billed as an introduction to covenant theology.Second, I would have liked to see more time given to the differences of opinion among those who subscribe to covenant theology. Horton does this with some issues - such as the existence of the "redemptive covenant," as he calls it - but I feel like there's more diversity in opinion, particularly about structure and organization, than he lets on here.Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend this text for any layperson who wants a concise, readable overview of covenant theology. Also - no gripes with the Kindle formatting.

With the resurgence of Reformed thought and the renovation of the support for covenantal ideas in the scholarship of the Ancient Near Eastern literature now is a perfect time to present classic covenant theology to a new generation. In a book subtitled "An introduction to Covenant Theology" this is exactly what I was hoping Horton would do.Unfortunately, in my opinion he misses an opportunity here a bit. This is not because I found any specific doctrinal disagreement with Horton, but because of where he chose to spend his energy. The first part of the book is spent rolling out the widely discussed Suzerain-Vassal treaties. While this is nice corroboration for classic covenant ideals, it's kind of a "paste on" to the core of the theology. So I moved quickly through this section to get to chapter 5, which is where he really discusses the structure of covenant theology itself (perhaps a bit late). On the good side, in this chapter Horton makes some very strong but subtle points which affect our reading of the Scripture and draws out a few quotes from classics like Geehardus Vos, Perkins, and a few other Puritans. On the bad side, he spends a lot of correcting O. Palmer Robertson's view, and then striking out against the New Perspective on Paul with out naming it by name. It might be good content for a scholarly article, but it was not good content for an introduction to covenant theology. I left more clear on how he differed from Robertson than the actual import of covenant theology. It is only chapter 5 which deals directly with covenant theology itself and it's implication on our view of the Bible... the preceding chapters are preamble, and the following chapters are outworkings of the implications of covenant theology in various spheres.Horton may have laid good groundwork for a renovation of the theology, but if it is going to impact a broader reading audience, someone is going to have to release a book which deals more completely with the historic theology and it's implications on our hermeneutics and is friendly to an average reader.

i would say first of all that this is not to be read as a bedtime book. i had to be awake and alert to be thoughtful enough to follow. a bit complex, but thorough, at the start. book is easier to understand as it progresses. take time to read decent sized pieces of this little (100 Page) book that packs a wallop. let time assist the settling into the mind these little chunks of info and then proceed.(if you are familiar with covenant theology already, then maybe the book is much easier for you to read cover to cover in one or two sittings. this was not the case for me. this is not my first brush with covenants as such, but my first with them as a system of.....thank you Mr. Horton.

I trust Horton and he is without a doubt one of the best theologians around. He requires that you pay attention but always delivers on the goods. This topic is not well known in today's Christian circles and Horton builds a foundation that helps the average person to begin understanding how God has related to man throughout redemptive history.

Well-written as always with Horton. Very well researched and well articulated books about covenants even though I disagreed with some parts of the book.

Excellent book. It was a little verbose, and the logic is sometimes hard to follow and you have to re-read the same paragraph 2 or 3 times, but overall an excellent work.Horton view each covenant in Scripture through the lens of Law & Gospel, and shows how Christ ultimately fulfills both.

From Booklist

This cycling memoir, written by the coordinator of the NCAA "March Madness" basketball tournament, begins in 2001, when Hancock's son, Will, died in an airplane crash, along with several members of the Oklahoma State basketball team and its staff. Grief stricken, the author and his wife stumbled through their daily routines, unable to conceive of anything that would bring them back to some sort of normality. Then inspiration struck. The author decided to follow through with a project he had been planning before his son's death: a cross-country bicycle trip. With his wife as his SAG (a biker acronym, meaning "support and guidance"), Hancock embarked on a journey that would take him from shore to shore and from numbing grief to new life. Much more than a sports book, this is an exploration of desolation and the incredible lengths we sometimes have to go to conquer it. Only the very cold reader will get through this one without shedding a few tears. David PittCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is a great read for those who have experience in loss or those who want a peak into it to understand a friend or loved ones plight. You are taken on a journey across the country and across the "grief" continent. It has a great touch of reality and some humor to lighten the read. If you are from the author's side of "the fence" you will find yourself face to face with your own "Blue Moths" and given an understanding of just how you can push them away. You may have to stop for a while when faced with similarities in your own journey, but don't quit on this read. I have read many books by grievers and this one is in my top 10.

From the perspective of a trans-am rider, the author captures the highs and lows of this kind of journey quite well and keeps the reader's attention on that aspect of the book. Considering the circumstances of the ride itself, it is a remarkable testament to parental loss, love, and striving for meaning after an unexplainable heart-rending tragedy.I found myself grabbing a highlighter as I read through this book marking off all the passages and reflections that were so very familiar to anyone having experienced the grieving process in the “early days" of grief (his bike ride took place only six months after his son Will was killed in a plane crash). From all the volumes written about loss, this is a work that I definitely recommend and one I dearly appreciate.

Bill Hancock has a parent's worst nightmare, death of a child in a tragic accident. How do you survive and re-establish your life? How do you interact with the many people who don't know how to respond to your grief? How do you just put one foot in front of the other each day and how hard is it? This book explains all of this in a poignant manner. You will be in tears in the first chapter and again at the end but you will learn about dealing with the death of a loved one, about the beauty of our country and its people, and about a wonderful couple willing to share their story which may help many others. I could not recommend this book higher.NOTE: I heard of this book from "Outside the Lines" the Espn weekly show which discussed the 10 year anniversary of the OK St. basketball team plane crash. Bill was on the show and the title of his book was mentioned. You can tell from his short time on the show that he was a man of character and humility. Next time you decide to ride your bike across country Bill, don't do it cold turkey. At least train!

This was one of the best books I have ever read. I recommended it numerous times and everyone has agreed that it is full of inspiration and very well written. I ordered this book after a local sports talk show host in my area raved about it. I think it would make a great movie. I cried, I laughed, and I will always remember the wonder messages he wrote to his granddaughter. I rarely reread books; but this one, I definitely will.

Words of wisdom, tears, laughter and hope lace this astounding journey together, teaching us valuable lessons of kindness, healing and the boundless capacity of the human spirit. Thank you, Bill Hancock, for sharing you personal story and that of your family.

How do you find meanng to life after a tragedy of inexplicable pain and horror? Shakespeare said the greatest tragedy on earth is when a parent buries a child. How do you find grace, courage, the grit and will to carry on in the presence of such grief?...That's what this book is about. The redemption and renewal of hope of one, Bill Hancock. He had been around athletics and athletes all his life, around those who talked about courage and the need to keep on keeping-on when times were "tough." Now, Bill Hancock, had to see if those things were true...If he could find those elements in his life that he had taught to others...This is the story of one man's remdemption through grace and a most unusual odyssey. This book will stand the test of time.

For anyone who lost a child, this is a very inspiring book. I remember where I was when I heard of the plane crash because I was an OSU basketball fan because of Eddie Sutton. I visited Gallagher-Iba Arena to see the memorial after reading this book.I appreciated Bill Hancock talking of his relationship with his sons. That set the stage for the section about the bike ride. I appreciated the tell it like it was theme of the bike ride, especially his mention of traveling through Monticello and Dermott, Arkansas. His retelling of his ride, with his wife as SAG of the ride, would make me want to do something like that because he did it for an altruistic motive. I would recommend this book to anybody and my copy is loaned to someone else.

I originally bought this book for friends who lost their 16 year old son in an accident. This last year I bought it for myself and read it. If you have recently suffered the loss of a loved one it is very difficult to get through the first chapter where the author details the loss of his son and the immediate reactions of the family and friends. After the first chapter the book moves into the difficult ups and downs of getting on with every day life with while being gripped by overwhelming grief. There are so many places in this book where the author is able to put incredible perspective on what most people would consider ordinary events. Whether you've suffered the loss of a loved one or not, you will read this book and look at people and things differently than you did before. I hope that I am a better friend to people who suffered a loss because of the understanding this book gives the reader. I found myself disappointed as I was nearing the end, because the book was so well written that I wanted to keep on going with Bill Hancock beyond his cross country bike ride. I "googled" the author and contacted him by e-mail to tell him why I had bought 2 copies of the book and how much it meant to me after reading it. He responded the next day with a very thoughtful e-mail. I highly recommend reading Riding With the Blue Moth by Bill Hancock.

From Library Journal

This volume, constituting the printed version of the first of the Alix G. Mautner Memorial Lectures to be given periodically at UCLA, certainly gets this new series off to a flying start. World-renowned for the liveliness and creativity of his physical insights, Caltech physicist Feynman provides another of his tours de force as he clearly explains the arcane workings of quantum electrodynamics, a theory which Feynman himself helped to establish. Starting with such familiar phenomena as the reflection and refraction of light, Feynman goes on to describe in detail the interactions between electrons and light. Although the text requires more concentration to grasp than most science popularizations, things never get out of hand. A good choice for collections serving informed readers. Thomas E. Margrave, formerly with Physics & Astronomy Dept., Univ. of Montana, MissoulaCopyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

"Physics Nobelist Feynman simply cannot help being original. In this quirky, fascinating book, he explains to laymen the quantum theory of light, a theory to which he made decisive contributions." (The New Yorker)"Feynman's lectures must have been marvelous and they have been turned into an equally entrancing book, a vivid introduction to QED which is leavened and enlivened by his wit. Anyone with a curiosity about physics today should buy it, not only to get to grips with the deepest meaning of quantum theory but to possess a slice of history."---Pedro Waloschek, Nature

I very much enjoyed reading the book, probably because I appreciate Richard Feynman's writing style. He was a brilliant Physicist, and Nobel Prize Winner in Physics. However, I have issues with Quantum Physics. I am a retired nuclear physicist, and somehow Quantum physics reduces the entire universe to *PROBABILITIES.* II will not go into specifics, which would put everyone to sleep, but I personally prefer Relativity to explain the Universe. One small example: Quantum theory maintains that Any Moment, OR Instant -- Like --NOW -- is that exact moment throughout the Universe. Relativity maintains that TIME slows down near a large gravity well such as a star, like our sun, and as any mass approaches the speed of light, ALSO, the Mass Increases at these great speeds, thus there cannot be a Universal 'NOW instant.'

Richard Phillips Feynman - what more can I say about this guy that hasn't been said already through the years? Feynman was an incredibly original physicist (fellow Nobel laureate Julian Schwinger called him someone who marched to his beat) who dazzled and impressed not only his esteemed peers but also managed to carve himself a special place in the public eye.Feynman is that unique and rare breed of scientist who can successfully explain very complicated ideas in simple terms so non-scientists (or scientists not in his field) can understand. He uses his own brand of metaphors and analogies to clarify quantum mechanics, and QED is the perfect example of that.In just four lectures (delivered, incidentally, at my alma mater UCLA in the 1980's), Feynman distills the essence of Quantum Electrodynamics without assuming any prior math or physics background in his audience. He doesn't use any calculus, any abstract algebra, heck he doesn't even mention complex numbers once! Incredible! QED has been hailed as the most precise scientific theory ever constructed because its predictions have been confirmed by so many experiments throughout the last half of 20th century. It reconciles the many discrepancies between the 'classical' version of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics and successfully explains many other anomalies seen in nature. Feynman shared the Nobel in physics (with Schwinger and Tomonaga) for playing a key role in developing the theory.Using simple arrows and basic operations like 'shrinking' and 'turning' arrows, Feynman explains phenomena such as reflection by mirror, partial reflection by glass, absorption by opaque materials, the apparent slowing of light as it goes through water and other media etc. All through the lectures he maintains a light tone and makes several self-deprecating jokes about the way physicists name things (he reserves particular scorn and derision for the naming of quarks). As a medical/graduate student in neuroscience but with some math and physics background (but not enough to actually understand renormalization and gauge theories), I really appreciated Feynman's ability to explain QED so effectively without ever sounding condescending (which a lot of physicists are unfortunately too prone to do). This your chance to read one of 20th century's most influential physicist break down one of the most fundamental theories of physics with great style and elegance.

In the introduction, it is suggested that you slowly reread paragraphs to be sure you understand them. Good advice; QED is not something intuitively easy to understand, even though the explanations are presented with a minimum number of formulas and scientific jargon.Another reivewer pointed out that this book is good because it is short. I agree; even if you don't understand it all on the first read, it isn't a major commitment to read it a second or third time.A good teacher makes you feel smart and confident enough in your newly acquired knowledge to share it with others. Even though I couldn't pass even a basic test on QED, I did learn several interesting things about light that I can explain in casual conversation and even demonstrate. Share what you've learned with your children. This is interesting enough that you might inspire him or her to become a physicist.

So this is what physicists do. They observe light and make mathematical formulas based on the observations of the behavior of it. This is how physicists see the world. Tiny particles bouncing this way and that, sometimes in predictable ways. This is as simple an explanation of photons that I have ever read. It is all clearly explained and the math isn't too difficult. I wonder of the utility of this formulation? I will never set up experiments such as these, so I will never be able to test the theory presented here. But it is interesting to see how physicists see the world. Or at least the tiny proportion of the world that they do observe.

In this age of new discoveries in fundamental physics he is sorely missed. The book is compelling not because he is a great explainer but because he seems to fundamentally understand more clearly. So he has no fear in describing the limits of theories or knowledge - many popularizers are not true scientists and it is tricky for them to tell the difference between their own limits and the actual limits of the theories. - to reveal that there is *no* physical intuition at the quantum level - just laws. And we want those laws to be as elegant and simple and true to experiment as possible.

Uneven Development: Nature, Capital, and the Production of Space

Review

Smith provides a brilliant formulation of how the production of a particular kind of nature and space under historical capitalism is essential to the unequal development of a landscape that integrates poverty with wealth, industrial urbanization with agricultural diminishment. (Edward Said)Smith attempts no less than the integration of nature and space in the Marxian theory of capitalist development. The aim is to link two radical traditions―geographical and political―by theoretically illuminating the reality of uneven development. . . . Smith raises the level of the debate on the fundamental question by taking a definite stance. He improves the clarity even of the arguments made in disagreement with him. His book should be widely read, used, and discussed. (Environment and Planning)This book is a classic. It deals with fundamental issues that simply do not go away, and demonstrates the enduring relevance of Marxist political economy. (Noel Castree coauthor of Spaces of Work)Uneven Development is one of the most important books of specifically geographical social theory to be written in the English language in the last 30 years. As rapid environmental change and attendant political divisions and struggles return to the fore (propelled in no small part by global climate change), this remains one of the few places to turn in social theory for a rigorous and insightful explanation. (W. Scott Prudham author of Knock on Wood: Nature as Commodity in Douglas-Fir Country)

OK

Although I am not extremely well versed in Geography, this book is an excellent work about space and creation of uneven development in capitalism. The first two chapters are especially interesting, and deal with the general understanding of space on a philosophical level. The comparison between earlier views, such as relative space, against Newton's absolute space. As far as I understand it relative space saw space as a relation between specific matter or objects. Absolute space is the way we see space now in common parlance, signifying space as a large capsule where things are contained within. After reading this book, I seemed to have come to the conclusion that capitalism has aspects of both philosophies in practice.Neil Smith also distinguishes between various theories of nature, how society has come to see nature as external to man. He ties this in later with Marx's theories on spatial relations and 'production of nature'. Good companion to David Harvey's Urban Experience or Condition of Postmodernism, who incorporates Marx's theories in application to space.Slightly difficult, and abstract, but well worth the effort.

I think that it is a great book, for all those geographers or of other diciplines interested in the space aspects, the ones that are in this book in a very good fundamental argument about the development of the term space production and the factors that influence in the unequal production in a capitalist system

One of the abiding insights that comes through in Goetz Ally's Into the Tunnel is just how efficient bureaucracies can be at transforming vibrantly alive human beings into impersonal statistics on official forms. In their extermination program, the Nazis, with an eerie fidelity to record-keeping, felt the need to document every detail of the lives they were destroying. That's why Aly is able to trace the unhappy fate of the beautiful little girl, Marion Samuel, who is the protagonist of this unhappy tale.Such exercises are important; they help to keep memory alive. But Aly's book is more of a model of historical research than a sustained biography that captures who Marion Samuel was. This is as it must be. Nazi documentation records dates when the Samuel family loses its business, moves from one locale to another, and is rounded up for deportation to Auschwitz, but little else. There are few photographs left, and family memories on both Cilly's (Marion's mother) and Ernst's (her father) side have dimmed (or were outright obliterated by the Holocaust). So what we have in this book is a lot of data that leaves us with the sinking awareness that the 12-year old Marion simply disappeared in a wide ocean of bureaucratic files and forms even before she was murdered and incinerated at Auschwitz.Still, we get glimpses of her, and those glimpses are all the more poignant for being so incomplete. One of her schoolmates recalls that in 1938, a full five years before her murder, an 8-year old Marion was already feeling the burden of the Nazi horror. She remembers (p. 82) that at one point a near-hysterical Marion blurted out her fear that Jews were disappearing into an ominous tunnel. We also know that at the final roundup, Marion was separated for three full days from her parents, and sent to a detention warehouse full of equally parentless children. Marion's mother, Cilly, was sent on to Auschwitz and quite likely was immediately murdered. Marion and her father Ernst were reunited in the same transport that took them both to Auschwitz. One can only imagine the forlornness Marion experienced before she was reunited with her father for their final journey into the tunnel. Both were murdered a week later. It's good that Aly's work allows us to know something of a child, unspeakably murdered before she barely had a chance to live, who otherwise would've totally disappeared.

Gotz Aly set out to discover who Marion Samuel was after being named the recipient of the "Marion Samuel Prize." Using the best of his historical detection skills he was able to piece together her short, tragic life that ended at the hands of the Nazis. This book is concise, informative, and heartbreaking.

More than other books, the main interest of this one is how and why it was written. The Remembrance Foundation randomly selected Marion Samuel as a memorial icon, sort of an “unknown soldier.” Upon being awarded a literary prize named in her honor, author Gõtz Aly decided to research the girl's past to to tell her story in place of anonymity. It's a fairly familiar saga of a business family thriving in Germany before 1933, then splitting up, with some getting to the US, some to Singapore, and some who stayed until deportation and death. Aly has done a tenacious job of difficult research in giving the girl a face and small personality as a memorial to her and other victims. He uses verbal testimony and old photos to reconstruct the girl's family history before their murder at Auschwitz in 1943. Using German records, he balances the poignancy of their story with an accounting, to the pfennig, of the small financial benefit that the Reich obtained by their deportation and murder. The book is well reviewed in preface, introduction and afterword. They don't say whether the Remembrance Foundation needs to make another selection as a universal icon to represent the rest of those who went “into the tunnel.”

Marion Samuel was eleven years old when she arrived at Auschwitz in March of 1943, she was gassed to death the same day and her body burned in the crematorium. He ashes were thrown into a pit with hundreds of others and then covered over with soil. Their is no marker over where she died. But who was this child and what was her crime that she should be treated so. She came from a lower middle class family from West Pomerania, near the Baltic Sea where the German-Polish border is today. At the age of six she was a witness to Kristallnacht and forbidden to go to the German Public School she had attended for the last three years. He family lost their business and both her parent's became "unskilled" factory workers. Marion was able to go to a "Jewish" school for two more years, before those were shut down. For the last years of her life she lived in a one room ground floor apartment off an alley. Since her parent's were away each day, she had to fill her time as best she could. How did she view the world she lived in? Did she wonder why she and her parents were being treated the way they were? Did she have any understanding that she was being punished for a random act of birth? At least we know she was on the same train as her father (who lasted sixty one days in the camp) when she was "evacuated". Thankfully, the horrors at the end for this little girl were tempered by the comfort of a parent.Hopefully, the people that ordered her death, and carried it out, suffered for what they did.

"Into the Tunnel" by Gotz Aly is the story of a girl's life--one of the murdered millions of Jews under the Nazi regime. Mr. Aly does his best to recreate the life of a little girl by using the records he could find on her life, and filling in gaps with historical information. It is heartbreaking to read the far too short tale of this little girl's life, but what a brilliant idea to pull her from obscurity and give the world this story. It would be wonderful to be able to be able to do this for all the victims of genocide.
