Review

Mismatch is a powerful read that not only has the potential to change the way we approach design but also serves as a strong check to our ingrained assumptions about how and why people move, act, speak, and interact (or dont).―Gray MagazineDesigning for inclusion is not a feel-good sideline. Holmes shows how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies. It can be a catalyst for creativity and a boost for the bottom line as a customer base expands. And each time we remedy a mismatched interaction, we create an opportunity for more people to contribute to society in meaningful ways.―800-CEO-READ

Kat Holmes shows us how to make inclusion a source of innovation. An important read for anyone who aspires to build great products for the greatest number of people.―Satya Nadella, CEO, MicrosoftDesign shapes our human experience. As software changes our world, inclusive thoughtful design will be even more important. In this absorbing and important book, Kat Holmes lays out clear steps and the role we can each play to overcome bias and create inclusive design.―Victoria A. Espinel, CEO of BSA | The Software AllianceKat Holmes's approachable book, Mismatch, calls to tech industry leaders and designers to create inclusion by making a world that invites all of us to participate and benefits everyone. Designing for the future, Holmes convinces, requires designing for human diversity. Mismatch is a manifesto, a primer, and a rousing invitation for everyone in the design and production process to become inclusion experts who will collectively make a better, more effective, and more just world for us to share.―Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Professor of English and Bioethics at Emory University, author of Extraordinary Bodies and Staring: How We LookDesign at its best gladdens our lives, and shapes the way we experience the world―but it can limit that experience, too. Counters may be too elevated for someone in a wheelchair, and playgrounds built solely for able-bodied children a trial for those who can neither run nor climb. Even a magical faucet, built to flow at the wave of a hand, is ill suited for the blind. In Mismatched, a crusading and important look at how design can frustrate and even alienate users, Kat Holmes compels us to be more inclusive. She shows us that design requires not only ingenuity but humility. It must solve problems, yes, but it must also work with those excluded to reimagine and improve their experiences.―Caroline Baumann, Director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

During the early days of my career within product creation at Nike, the maxims of Simply & Go, The Consumer Decides, and Be A Sponge were constantly reinforced. With Simplify and Go, we were encouraged to trust the expertise of others and ask questions when we did not know the answers. The Consumer Decides urged us never take them for granted and maintain a wide on-going dialogue sharing ideas and insights (back and forth) in order to truly understand their individual perspectives. Be A Sponge was, above all else, maintaining curiosity. Opening your eyes, ears and heart, and constantly look all around you.All of these are still relevant when approaching design but what Kat Holmes amplifies in Mismatch is the need to dive a bit deeper, reach out a bit farther, talk and listen a bit more and maybe work slightly harder. We need to step outside our comfort zone in order to grow individually and also to improve upon a products own design elasticity. Those who have lived through exclusion have extraordinary insights that highlight the biases in current solutions and approaches. They need to be equal partners in our exploration and process.Kat reinforces the idea that we, as designers, developers, product managers, all have the power to make change happen. If we think about disability as mismatched interactions versus a personal health condition, we can establish a new and profound mindset. A new approach that when designing for inclusion, we ultimately are designing for uncertainty and our future selves. There is also business justification rooted in an inclusive process but most importantly, its designing product with clear intent and purpose that makes things a bit better so that more people can play.

Don’t enter this book thinking it’s about coding accessible websites or meeting WCAG guidelines in a product. It’s so much more than that. Mismatch is an info-rich guide to aligning your priorities and practice to creating better solutions by including more people. Step out of the accessibility-as-a-checklist mind and into a truly inclusive ethos. Great for designers, developers, business people, and really anyone interested in creating a just offering in the world.

If you make products and can’t answer ‘who am I excluding’, you should read this book. Every day people have to adapt to make products work for them. You’re one of those people. Think about it: we all experience challenges with objects in our lives because of permanent or temporary disabilities. Kat provides a framework for identifying exclusion and tools to make products that allow everyone to use them. She shares stories and anecdotes that help connect the methods described. Mismatch is an excellent guidebook for anyone creating experiences for customers.

Without ostracizing, Mismatch is able to maintain neutrality and present concrete ideas and concepts of how the design of systems, technology, products, and the environment surrounding them shape our world and the people within it using past and present examples.Kat Holmes, essentially creates a glimpse into the future of further exclusion and how designers, meaning anyone who creates solutions for the public, can exclude a specific population of consumers if inclusive design isn’t prioritized during the design process. The way she poses questions to archaic ways of designing, sheds light on how change is needed to break the cycle of exclusion today. I personally appreciate how meaning, value and inclusivity is given to the profession of inclusive design, highlighting the skills necessary to define who can become an inclusive designer.A thought provoking voice.

When a book is so full of quotable passages that you are compelled to flag almost every page, you know you've met a thoughtful writer whose message is clear. What I appreciate most about this book is that Kat Holmes makes you care about inclusive design – whether you're a designer or not, or work in tech or not – because it's not only good for the products and services that companies make, but it's also good for us as communities and as a society. Learning about the inclusive design method will change how you think about, well, everything.

An excellent short book in the Simplicity series curated by John Maeda (all of the books I have read in this series are excellent). This book can change ho you approach design. It can also change how you support life. Kat Holmes (who pioneered this work while at Microsoft) proposes three design principles: (1) recognize exclusion, (2) learn from diversity, (3) solve for one, extend to many. These are not only good design principles. They are a guide to how to interact in many social and organizational situations. Next time you are at a party or in a business meeting, look to see who is being excluded and what that means about the group dynamics. Look at who you exclude in your daily life and ask why.One of the best parts of this books is the stories of designers who have used various disabilities as a way to transform design. An example, imagine being a gamer who does not have use of their hands, and who cannot use a game controller. How would that change how you play games. How would it change the games you design? The story of the design of US fighter cockpits is telling. Back in the 1940 as jets were being introduced they were designed to fit the average pilot. How many of us are average on all dimensions? None of us. So a set of controls designed for the average suited no one. The results was a lot of accidents, many fatal. The cockpits were later redesigned to be adjustable so that each pilot could fit the cockpit to their own size and preferences.I will be getting copies for all three of my kids (all of whom work in design fields) and expect to reread this book several times.

This was my 1st Julie Garwood book and I loved it. It was a easy read since I love historical romances! The characters were easy to fall in love with and the story line had enough twists in it to keep it interesting. It took a little getting used to reading how women were treated back then but a good read all the same! I'm looking forward to reading the sequel "Ransom" next.

I loved this book years ago and decided to read it again to see if I still felt the same way. I do!When 4 year old Lady Judith met 5 year old Francis Catherine at a festival held on the border between Scotland and England, they had no idea that their friendship wasn't supposed to happen. For years afterward they would meet each summer at the games and it was if they had never been separated. After they got older, Francis Catherine told Judith of her fear that she would someday die in childbirth like her mother and grandmother. She had Judith promise that she would be there when she gave birth. Judith immediately began learning all that she could of childbirth so that she could be helpful when the time came. Years later, she makes the trip to the Scottish Highlands to be with her friend as she waits to give birth. Of course, being English, she was not initially welcomed into the community where Francis Catherine lived. Is this story well represented by historical facts? No, not at all. Does it bother me? Nope. This isn't a time period that I prefer and I know little about it. I do realize that it is 'cleaned up' a bit and that is okay with me. Why do I like it? I loved the heroine's "Hey, you're not going to stop me" attitude. I really like a dark, brooding hero with a soft heart who wants what is best for his people. And I really, really loved the intense friendship between the two girls. And, as always, I love Garwood's gift for humor and witty dialogue. I'm so glad that I reread this book and will likely read it again in a few years.Sexual situations may offend some readers

An audio review.I loved The Secret and after listening to it for the first time and re-reading it for the 20 billionth time, I think I love it more.Judith is a strong and feisty English woman whose best friend is a Scot. When she's asked to attend her friends birthing of her first child, she does not hesitate to pack her bags.Ian is Laird and as a favour to his brother offers to collect the English woman. Ian thinks his brother is daft giving in to his woman and scoffed at his devotion and need to make her happy. When the two meet there is an instant attraction, but a Scottish Laird and an English lass is not a good alliance.Judith has a secret that could ruin everything. Ian knows that by taking an English bride he's asking for trouble...but can't seem to stop himself. Only the two of them can decide if their love is worth the sacrifice.I laughed so hard at this one and got some very strange looks on the train. I'm pretty sure I had a goofy grin on my face for most this one.The storyline is captivating, the characters lovable and the love story enough to make me sigh. I will definitely be listening to more in the future.

When I was in high school (20 years ago), I really loved Julie Garwood books. I guess I've grown out of them because this one was so formulaic it bordered on boring - I find that almost all romance books I read these days are ridiculous to me. Here's the formula:Take 1 tall, muscular, perfect looking manTake 1 small, beautiful womanmix in a little spirit and boldness for the womanmix in some chauvinistic "I'm here to protect you" for the manThis creates a whole lot of "lust at first sight"also required is traveling outside together for long distances - riding on the same horse with the woman in front of the man - camping outdoors (where the woman apparently never needs to pee)now add in some scowling for the hero and some hurt feelings for the ladywhich of course turns into "I'm in love with you and want to marry you" after just a week. Now - once they're married and things seem to be going well, add in a misunderstanding, or a secret, or one of them not telling their plans to the other person. This results in some sort of danger for the perfect heroine in which the man has to rescue her, and then they ride off together and realize again how much they love each other. Make sure all of this happens in just a month or two. Almost always end your book with the heroine realizing she's pregnant (although it didn't' happen in this book).Seriously - this is the plot of 90% of historical romances. Why can't anyone do something different!

This book actually started with a bit of fun. Two little girls who didn't know they should hate each other one being English and the other being Scottish become fast friends. They nurture their friendship through the years making each other a promise to come in the time of need. When Judith begins her travels to Scotland with men sent to retrieve her to help her see her friend she starts falling in love with the chieftain Iain. It's all possessive attitude, growling and arrogance galore. I liked Judith because she was so unburdened by this hatred to all things Scottish, she saw the world as it should be not as it wass and always tried to help others. She breathed fresh air into Maclean clan and brought needed changes.Iain Maclean is a typical male of his time - demanding, stubborn and sinfully good-looking. But there are moments when he is tender and understanding with Judith that make me think that deep down he can be a softie if only for his wife. This was funny at times sweet historical romance. It did feature a myriad of ancient ridiculous beliefs that I loved reading about. So I recommend it! I liked it!

Another good read by Scott Pratt. This is a lawyer / investigator novel that will hold your attention.

An odd word, perhaps, to describe a book that centers on the kidnapping of a six year old girl, but the book is written with such compassion, such empathy and, ultimately, the unshakable belief that love is all around us; all we need do is let it in and follow its dictates. I love Joe Dillard, the lawyer/lead character in this superior series. He is kind, wise, impassioned, sad, loving, he carries the burdens of us all on his shoulders and can be quick to anger. But, he also understands that love, if allowed its due, its place, has a healing capacity beyond anything the medical profession has yet to come up with. He is complex, driven, obsessed with doing “The right thing”, and he needs this obsession. His life and work bring him far too close to life’s horrors, and a less driven man would quit, stop, give in, give up. Would concede to how unfair this life is. He also knows that he is entirely responsible for how he reacts to, and shapes his life, That it is his duty to find all the joy that exists around him, often right there beside his lifetime of despicable events, some professional, some personal, ALL potentially overwhelming. Joe has good and bad luck in abundance. The main good? Joe has a wise, strong, brilliant and inspiring partner. Someone with great instincts, reliable intuitions, and a tremendous perspective on life. It’s battles and it’s rewards. A true fascination with life’s delightful details, as well as its Wonderful Big Picture. Joe’s partner is also his best friend. They talk through everything, unerringly truthfully, regardless of how painful the subject may sometimes be. An artist with a cancer diagnosis, Joe’s partner has a capacity for love that is a wonder to behold, to be felt. His partner is also his wife. His partner THROUGH life. And, their love for each other is pure, true, complex, forever, and definitive in a way that is both incredibly rare and awe-inspiring.This book is constructed brilliantly. With crystal clear, illuminating and often amusing prose. Every character is a wonder of construction and individuality. The crimes are thrilling, dreadful, frightening and, ultimately SOLVED. These Joe Dillard books have true literary merit while never failing to entertain. REAL page turners without a single trick up its sleeve. You come away from these books knowing that you have spent your time well in reading them. They offer so many rewards. I not only recommend them, but I INSIST that any reader who enjoys intelligent thrills, imaginative twists, entertaining plots, intriguing “procedurals”, as well as characters you deeply care for who constantly reinforce the inspirational belief that, even in the face of life’s many horrors, life is still, and will always be, well worth living

When I decided to read the Scott Pratt series of five books starring Joe Dillard, I ordered them in order so I could begin at the beginning! The first book was wonderful; the second, third, and fourth also gripping. As I read the 5th book in the series I did so with trepidation, not knowing when I would have the chance to follow Joe Dillard again. Joe is a noble man--an attorney who has been on both sides of the courtroom as a criminal attorney. In the first book he is defending a truly INNOCENT client. Then he becomes disillusioned with criminal defense and decides to join the District Attorney's office. He's equally good from that standpoint, as well, but politics rears its ugly head and takes the shine off that line of work! Joe Dillard is noble, vulnerable, loyal, decisive, sometimes he acts before he thinks things through--but he is just a great character. Entirely devoted to and in love with his wife of more than 20 years, Joe suffers as much as his beloved Caroline as she fights a terrible battle against the breast cancer that has invaded her body and, indeed, her marriage and her life. The Joe Dillard series is gripping. I managed to read all five books in about one week (and only stopped when my Kindle ran out of juice)--didn't do much other stuff that I should have been doing; but I would do it all over again if there were five MORE books in the series. I read all the time; love mysteries and thrillers, adore books with lots of legal angles and courtroom drama. I can not even begin to say how much I love this series of books. Scott Pratt is a marvelous writer who knows his legal stuff, has created a character who is tough, mean-as-a-snake when need be; and gentle as a kitten in his relationship with his wife and he children. READ THIS SERIES OF BOOKS and read them all in order if possible. You will not regret it. Scott Pratt holds his audience in the palm of his hand and his audience loves it!

I have read the first five books of the Joe Dillard Series in the shortest amount of time. I have never read a series and I am totally hooked. The author is brilliant and Joe Dillard is adorable even when he does something stupid. This last book brought tears to my eyes. The author is really good at mixing the personal life and career of Joe Dillard. As a physician I like very much how he deals with medical topics. I also like his approach to religion and war. Highly recommend it. I am already enjoying book 6.

I think I'm addicted to the lives of Joe and Caroline Dillard. Each book in the series seems to be better than the one before it, if that is possible! Only 8 books in the series? Come on, Scott! With that devious mind of yours, you can come up with more adventures for Joe and his pals. I do wish, though, that you could find some way to calm Joe's fierce temper; it worries me! I'm so afraid he's going to get in BIG, BIG trouble, but then I remind myself that he's only a character in a very exciting series. Only a character? Get real! He's an alive, exciting, clever hero, and I really enjoy reading about him, and I'm pulling for Sarah to finally get straightened out! Thanks to Joe, I'm staying up later at night and reading, reading, reading!

I love Joe Dilliard. This is the second book of read of the series I've read. Wish I would have read them in order but they are complete stories and can be read alone. This time Joe's looking for a missing 6 year old little girl. Some twists and lots of action. I will definitely read the rest of the series and hope Scott has plans to add some more with this character. This book was so good I read it in one day. Just could not put it down. Highly recommend. It is done without the use of foul language or over the top sex scenes which I appreciate.

I learned that Australia has been the only ally to the United States in every military conflict since 1914. This is one of the many things I learned from the writings of the late Charles Krauthammer. He loved the island of Australia so much that he even married a woman from Australia. Krauthammer used a wheelchair for most of his adult life, and I have used a wheelchair my entire life. He believed that not every place can be wheelchair accessible, but that will not stop me from trying to enjoy life. He points out the Kennedy Center is completely wheelchair accessible. I will make it a goal of mine to go to the Kennedy Center to see a live performance after learning this. I am inspired by the Krauthammer's thoughts about Jim Dickson He is a blind man who attempted to sail across the Atlantic Ocean, but he only managed to sail to Bermuda. Dickson came up short in reaching his goal, but it did not diminish his enjoyment of sailing because he could experience sailing using his other senses. This is the kind of writing that inspires me to try new challenges. Four Essays on Liberty by a British philosopher named Isiah Berlin is a book that he loved. Four Essays on Liberty is a book encouraged Krauthammer to learn from as many sources and experiences as possible as a young man. People who learn from many different sources are called foxes. People who learn from a primary source are called hedgehogs. I will strive to be a fox. Krauthammer advocated remaining calm at all times. He believed in self reflection, but he also believed that looking outwardly in the world to be successful. He shared this advice with college students in Montreal. This is great advice for people of any age. I really like this book.

Whether you agree with everything Charles Krauthammer believed in is of little relevance. You life and mind will thank you for the essays that will enrich your soul. Charles was a man of true and genuine thoughts, never allowed others to bulldoze him, but rather allowed others to enlighten him by truly listening and caring about what they had to say. He would then make up his own mind without bias and without an agenda. Charles' son, Daniel, who clearly respected and revered his father, did him a true solid by contributing to the book as he did - an obvious final goodbye and a true gift of love.

More sage, personable, delightful, perceptive comments from the wisest, finest tinker of our era! Thanks to his son for his work in compiling this treasure of deeply valuable, thought provoking articles and observations!

Just finished a wonderful book, unfortunately the last book written by Charles Krauthammer called” The Point of it All”.I have long admired his insightful writing, but this collection of his best articles and speeches is outstanding! His wit and wisdom is impressive and his writing style is easy to read, but best read with time allowed for reflection. His intellect is on full display when arguing for conservative principles based on the Constitution. I pity the unsuspecting liberal who attempted to debate against him. I fully support his criticism of liberal thinking and specifically Obama, but I also appreciate his honest and critical comments when Republicans stray from conservative principles. The diversity of topics he covers in the book was a sign of his personal curiosity, ranging from sports (especially baseball) to religion to domestic and foreign policy. I enjoyed his sense of history and his ability to relate current events in historical context.I enjoyed his frequent criticism of his former career as a physician and specifically a psychologist. I generally find physicians need to be a bit more modest and better grounded to the limits of their “practice”.Loved his use of quotes from Churchill and his distain for the French.I got rather emotional to read the last section, A life without regrets. To face death with grace and a full appreciation of what is really important in his life was his wife and family. I can only hope to handle my own passing with similar grace.

This wonderful book gives one insight into a man that had the ability to communicate with everyone. What he overcame in his life and what he did with his life should give everyone a more positive outlook on where they are in life and what they can do to make the world a better place.

Mr.Krauthammer was a very inspirational man,I would watch him on Fox news whenever he was on as a political commentator.I stayed up late reading all his writings on baseball and politics ,he said it like it was ,didn't beat around the bush,I admire him for that.I will definitely recommend this book to family and friends.

This is a gift for a fan of Charles'. I'm sure he'll enjoy ready it, and me when he's done. Charles was a wonderful man. Question: Are the pages supposed to be pointy scalloped, or were they supposed to be flush/flat like other books are?

I bought these books to give as gifts for Christmas, but the quality of this book is so poor that I hate to give as a gift. The paper is cheap, but mainly it is the edges of the pages which is not cut evenly at all. Very poorly put together.

I bought this book as a gift for my brother, who is a chef. While I don't eat a lot of meat, the recipes looked appetizing and thorough. I was pleased to see a section on side dishes.

Review

"A heartfelt pursuit of enlightenment and its causes."—Kirkus Reviews"I love every book I have read from Andy Newberg and Mark Waldman and this book is their best yet.  How Enlightenment Changes Your Brain is a book you just can’t put down.  It will show you how enlightenment is real with clear underpinnings in the brain.  From looking at the brains of Brazilian psychic mediums, Sufi mystics, Buddhist monks, Franciscan nuns and Pentecostals this books takes you on a fascinating ride and shines a light on wisdom and insight.  If you want to know more about the deeply human and spiritual parts of your brain, read this book."—Daniel G. Amen, MD, Founder, Amen Clinics, Author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life  "An incredible book! Newberg and Waldman’s 'Spectrum of Human Awareness' is especially brilliant, providing the reader with a 'how-to' map to shift between different states of human consciousness.  They have dozens of experiential exercises to help you gain greater emotional control as you tap into the creative wisdom of your mind. Read it, apply it, and be enlightened!"  —John Assaraf, Chairman & CEO of NeuroGym, Author of the New York Times bestseller, The Answer   "This extraordinary book shows you how to tap into mental powers you never knew you had, and release your full potential for living  a great life."—Brian Tracy, author of Maximum Achievement"Humans were experiencing enlightenment millennia before fMRI brain scanners were invented.  Yet, modern imaging techniques unquestionably add to the fascination of the correlations between consciousness and brain function.  Newberg and Waldman's book brings these findings up to date.  How Enlightenment Changes Your Brain is a feast for anyone interested in the neurophysiology of the spiritual quest."—Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters

This book busted me over the head with some profound food for thought. I’d been skeptical of the notion of Enlightenment. [Note: the authors distinguish big-E Enlightenment as a permanent and substantial brain change, in contrast to the little-e enlightenment which is just a momentary epiphanies or insight—a number of which may precede the big-E Enlightenment.] It’s not that I disbelieved that some people had life-changing and / or perspective-changing experiences, but rather that such events represented permanent change. My skepticism was influenced by the many gurus who have been said to be Enlightened, but who behaved to all appearances like petty, materialistic douche-bags. It’s not that I couldn’t believe that these teachers achieved some momentary heightened state of consciousness during their youth, but—if they had—they clearly couldn’t maintain it under the pressure of being idolized. I’d, therefore, come to think that life is a perpetual struggle to try to be a better version of oneself, and backsliding can and will happen at any moment. This book, however, suggests there is a possibility for permanent brain changes. [Though Dalberg’s “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” seems to still apply.]Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist who has made a career out of conducting brain imaging studies of people engaged in various spiritual, religious, and meditative activities. His co-author is a psychologist, Mark Robert Waldman, who works on applying neuroscientific understanding to positive psychology. In this book, the two examine what Enlightenment is from a neuroscientific standpoint and then try to cull the common features across a population of cases of Enlightenment / enlightenment. Discovering the common elements of Enlightenment is no easy task. While it seems everybody is theoretically capable of achieving Enlightenment, it also seems that the experience is different for everybody and the collection of systems (religious, spiritual, and secular) by which it’s pursued is vast. However, the authors present a five-step outline by which readers can prime themselves to achieve Enlightenment, and it can be personalized depending upon one’s beliefs (or lack thereof—Enlightenment occurs among agnostics and atheists as well as religious practitioners) and background. The book consists of 12 chapters divided among three parts. Part I (Ch. 1 to 5) lays the groundwork for readers to understand what Enlightenment is, how it feels, how it’s experienced between people with radically varying belief (and disbelief) structures, and it presents a model of human awareness that is crucial to the later discussion. Part II (Ch. 6 to 9) considers what happens in the brain during various practices by which individuals advance towards Enlightenment. Concepts like unity, surrender, and belief are explored in detail. Part III (Ch. 10 to 12) describes the process by which readers can pursue Enlightenment for themselves. If one is inclined to chart one’s own path, versus adopting an existing program, one has all the insight and tools to begin constructing one’s personal method by the time this section is complete. The book has graphics as necessary (e.g. brain diagrams) that largely consist of line diagrams. There is an appendix that consolidates tools and resources, and the book is annotated by chapter.I found this book to be both interesting and potentially beneficial to readers who take it beyond a popular science book and into the realm of self-help. The authors do a great job of navigating the waters between religion and science. Obviously, they are scientists and are agnostic about that which cannot be proven, but they don’t question other people’s beliefs and--if anything--error on the side of being open-minded. Still, I suspect that there will be religious types offended by the very notion that all humans are biologically primed to achieve this heightened state. It should be pointed out that the book could be supremely useful for such individuals because it points out the need to engage in exercises to challenge one’s most closely held beliefs. (Those with less mental flexibility and capacity for tolerance seem to be less likely to achieve Enlightenment.)I’d recommend this book for anyone trying to figure out how to be the ultimate version of oneself.

This volume is a much needed update to a earlier volume that I read decades ago by William Johnston, “Silent Music” (1979, HarperCollins) - which also used the best technology of the day, the 1970’s, to study the brain waves (EEG was as good as it got back then!) of monks and meditators, primarily from the Catholic and Zen Buddhist traditions. How far medical imaging technology has come in the 40 years since then! While SPECT scans aren’t as clear as fMRI they still indicate areas of the brain involved in the various mental states associated with “enlightenment” phenomenon, and the authors make a good case for why the most common elements of those experiences are encountered based on the their observations of functional scans of subjects’ brains. I commend them for their efforts. Since I am both an Episcopal priest and a clinical psychologist, the volume blends my two areas of professional experience and I found it intriguing. Coincidentally, I read the current book immediately after reading and leading a study group discussion of another book by the same publisher, “The Book of Joy” ( The Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, as recorded by Doug Abrams, 2016). I was struck by the convergence of themes in the two volumes - for example the Dalai Lama’s repeated references to himself as “just one of seven billion human beings on the planet,” and Newberg and Waldron’s recounting of subjects’ description of a sense of “unity or connectedness” (the first of the 5 elements of enlightenment, p. 51).Towards the end of the particularly, but also throughout, I found myself noting convergence with another development psychological scheme which neither ‘The Book of Joy” nor “How Enlightenment Changes Your Brain” make reference to, but which I felt would significantly depend the discussion, particularly toward then end of Newberg and Waldron in final chapter, “Enlightenment for All.” They note that, “If you seek Enlightenment, expect some resistance because your ever-changing brain doesn’t always like to change! … Any change in our environment, or in our brain, also stimulates the amygdala, causing us to react with uncertainty or fear. … This explains why … we found that most people are only partially open to new or different ideas. In fact, the stronger your belief system, the less likely you are to be open to other people who espouse different beliefs. But sometimes life’s stressors are so strong that your belief system fails to relieve your suffering. In that deep despair, you may realize that it is time to try something new.” (p246-247) This is precisely the process that James Fowler (“Stages of Faith”, 1981, rev ed. 1995, Harper) describes as the catalyst from a “lower” developmental stage to a higher one. He also is very clear that the developmental pyramid he describes is exactly that - a pyramid. As one ascends higher on the scale of consciousness, fewer and fewer people actually attain those higher stages. The conflict in our country at the moment is a prime example of how this plays out on a large, societal and national scale. Newberg and Waldron also (and I believe correctly) see a correlation between education and openness to change - those with higher education, who have been exposed to broader ideas and different cultures are more accepting of other’s ideas and beliefs. (p. 175) While Enlightenment may be available to all, not that many are interested in achieving it, as this would require a radical departure in deeply held, and some of us would describe them as dysfunctional, primitive or backwards, beliefs. The resurgence in hate crimes since last year’s campaign and election is a stark reminder of this fact. Yet, despite this, the good news is that Enlightenment IS available to anyone with the desire, drive and self-discipline to seek it. Both Newborn and Waldron, as well as the “Book of Joy” include appendices of structure exercises intended to assist people in discovering their own enlightenment experience. Perhaps, if more are successful, we can heal the hurt, pain and divisions now fracturing our country.

I was very interested in reading a book about brain function before, during, after "enlightenment" activities. While there was some of that, certainly more than in most such books, I was disappointed. There was much more about the enlightenment and what it means to the authors than about brain function when people are having spiritual kind of experiences. For my objectives I would give it 2 stars, but I am giving it 3 because for most people it might be interesting

This is an extraordinary body of work. As a therapist, and yoga teacher I am constantly pointing to this book for scientific support of the techniques I give clients. Well written, solidly researched, and compelling conclusions.

A fair rendition and explanation of the Enlightenment process and sequence. Other than that just one big problem, i.e., where is the science? If you want well-documented science on different states of consciousness and meditation then read The Spiritual Doorway in the Brain by Kevin Nelson, M. D.

Rather than the usual kinds of books about enlightenment, this one focuses on brain scans in conjunction with these kinds of experiences. Interesting, though perhaps a bit too scientific for the folks only casually interested in the subject.

This book is fantastic. It explained why we have enlightenment experiences from a brain scan understanding. It also has practical helps for how to promote enlightenment as it leads to unity and peace.

Really helped me understand the brain's way of dealing with Enlightenment and ways to improve the chances of getting there.
