From School Library Journal

Gr 6–9—Spoiled and sheltered, 16-year-old Princess Dorthea of Emerald has just found out that her parents are forcing her to marry arrogant Prince Kato. Outraged at her parents order, Dorthea makes a hasty wish on a cursed star, throwing her kingdom into chaos and landing her parents in a strange place called Kansas. With the help of a cunning maidservant named Rexi and the annoyingly rude Prince Kato, Dorthea sets out to undo the curse before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells "The End" for the world of Story. This is a a cute adventure with romance set in a world full of fairy-tale mash-ups. Readers will love Dorthea's evolution from spoiled princess to strong, confident heroine. There's plenty of action as Dorthea, Kato, and Rexi seek the help of the mysterious Wizard of Oz and encounter headless hags, tricky bumpkins, demonic puppies, and forlorn witches along the way. Though he's full of some unique surprises, Kato makes an excellent Prince Charming for Dorthea and helps her realize her inner strength. The plot tends to meander and can be confusing at times, but young fans who stick with it will find plenty of fairy-tale references, an unexpectedly sweet romance, and loads of adventure along the way. VERDICT For Oz fans, this work is a great clean-read alternative to Danielle Paige's Dorothy Must Die (HarperCollins, 2014).—Leigh Collazo, Dulwich College, Suzhou, China

Review

"A cute adventure with romance set in a world full of fairy-tale mash-ups. Readers will love Dorthea's evolution from spoiled princess to strong, confident heroine... For Oz fans, this work is a great clean-read alternative to Danielle Paige's Dorothy Must Die." - School Library Journal"There are, overall, two words to describe "Spelled": Clev. Er.With a starting point of a basic princess story, Schow moves with lightning speed through just about every fairytale and fantasy story you can remember, taking her main character on an original adventure with an Oz flair and a flirt with classic Grimm...Not too hard and not too soft, this book is just right for 12- to 17-year-old readers, but be sure to borrow it back for yourself. Fee, fi, fo, fum, "Spelled" smells like gigantic fun." - Bookworm Sez"Spelled is full of clever plays on words and fun reinterpretations of the original classic. While the story is light and comedic, Schow manages to weave a deeper plot and satisfying character growth into the pages. Spelled is ideal for readers who are looking for something light and entertaining. Fans of The Wizard of Oz will appreciate Schow's attention to detail in bringing characters and places they already know to new life with a clever twist." - Deseret News

Spelled is pretty funny. I think you might have to be in the right mindset for it since it isn’t really a traditional fairytale retelling and most of the time it is just making fun of itself, which I was totally in the mood for but I think had I hit it at a different time I might have thought it was too cheesy. But since I love me some Cheetos and I needed some lighter reading material this totally fit the bill.Initially I saw the show on the cover and I was like score, Cinderella retelling but it isn’t. It is a very lose retelling of The Wizard of Oz. I was less excited since that really falls close to the bottom fairytales I like, let alone want to be retold but actually due to the way it is done I didn’t mind at all.Things that are great❶ - The rules and quotes that open each chapter are a ton of fun. I love fairytales and so seeing stuff from make-believe books within a fairytale world even better.***“Rule #23: If you keep a storybook villain talking long enough, they will never fail to spill all the details of their evil plan. Some might even draw you a diagram.”—Definitive Fairy-Tale Survival Guide, Volume 2: Villains***I found most of them to be a bit hilarious especially since now all the normal rules of fairytale land have been broken.❷ - Kato a.k.a. the prince and our Toto of the story was kind of funny in a broody sarcastic way and then he was a little adorable later. Sure some of this is a little instalovey but I expect that in a fairytale retelling, I’m actually more surprised when it isn’t instalovey. Still there are some bumps since the initial meeting didn’t go particularly well. But overall I liked Kato and Dorthea’s journey from distain for each other to something fluffier.***“What are you doing? Did you just die?”“No,” he growled and turned his face up, pursing his lips in total seriousness. “I’ve recently been advised that you might find the cute and fuzzy approach much less threatening. Supposedly it’s also more endearing.”“I hate to tell you, but that Jolly Roger has sailed, sunk, and been eaten by ticking crocodiles.” I tried to stifle a laugh, but it was too large to contain. Kato really had zero skill at manipulation, but at least he was honest.***❸ - All the fairytale references, or fairy equivalent to something in the real world. I thought they were fun and funny most of the time. Like limited edition silver Hans Christian Louboutin slippers or Flitter (there version of twitter) and they even had a cloud that was actually clouds. I really enjoy stuff like that while reading.❹ - The actual story. Dorthea makes a wish that unmakes all the rules of Story and so nothing is guaranteed anymore even her happily ever after. So off she goes since there is an evil witch trying to kill her and she need to find a way to take her wish back or else the villains might really win this one. So she is off to see the Wizard in a really convoluted roundabout way that she didn’t realize she was taking in the beginning.❺ - The sidekick Rexi. She was snarky and I liked that she didn’t take any of Dorthea’s crap or let her be broody. She represents the cowardly lion but it isn’t obvious. She is a survivor and she will survive anyway she can, even if it means traveling with the girl who started this entire mess. I think she is the more human of all the characters and so I was pretty excited to see that she is the focus of the next book.***“First, I spit out a mouthful of dirt. Then, I screamed at the sky. “That’s it! I’ve had it! Everything is trying to kill me! All I did was make one stupid wish. Aladdin made three. I’m the hero of this story, so where’s my happy ending, already? It’s not fair.”Rexi bent over, trying to catch her breath. “You know what’s not fair? Spending Muse Day as a toad just because the kitchen ran out of frog legs. Or being volunteered for this little journey. So build a bridge, then make like a billy goat and get over it already because no one is listening.”***The little things that went a little wrongIt took me a little time to warm up to our Heroine. She has lived a really sheltered life so she was a bit of a brat when we first meet her. But no worries so becomes tolerable soon enough and even likeable by the end.Sometimes the flow felt a little jumpy. Like a bunch of kinda cool scenes written and then patchworked together. It wasn’t necessarily bad it was just a little a.d.d. on a few occasions.OverallIf you are looking for something light and silly that is just going to be fun and quirky then maybe this is for you. But you have to like Fairytales and you have to be willing to give the MC some time to grow on you.

This book takes a little bit to get into. It is definitely targeted at a more “true” YA audience than an adult one, but once the book got into full swing I found myself enjoying it too.Brief Summary from Goodreads:“Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.Talk about unhappily ever after.Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas."”The story starts out with a main character that is so snobby and full of herself that she is rude to anyone “below her” and only cares about her clothes and shoes. At the beginning, she is hardly an appealing main character. However, there are a ton of funny quips, snarky comments, and inside fairy tale jokes that made it interesting enough for me to want to continue anyway. By the time I got about 1/3 of the way through the story there was a great adventure story, a solid plot, and the princess was quickly becoming not so full of herself.I loved Kato and his backstory, and Dorthea's growth as a character was much appreciated. She went from a loathful annoyance to a character I could actually like. There isn't a ton of depth to either character's development or any of their relationships, but the writing of the book is clearly geared for the young to mid YA audience. As such, it did a great job.The ending was well done for this style of book. It was a satisfying happy ending without a final “happily ever after”. There were many plot lines left open to be continued in a sequel, but it was written in a way that didn't feel like an unfinished “to be continued”.I found that once it was all said and done, this book was a fun, lighthearted read that I could see myself picking up again in the future.RatingI rate this book a 3 out 5. Young adults would love this book, and adults that don't mind a fun adventure with a low level of character development will likely enjoy it to. I found it to be an easy, enjoyable read.

This is an interesting and informative book. I just wish there was more detail. I was recently told that I am an empath. I was not sure what that meant. I identified with the descriptions given here. Now I know why I become overwhelmed in large crowds and become overwhelmed by emotions sometimes.

Great read as a beginning to understanding the Empath within ones self, however more investigative reading for ME is definitely needed. Well-written! So much helpful information in a relatively short read. I would recommend starting here to learn more about the qualities of The Empath.

Great general information for anyone on their Empath journey: from people just figuring out this is what they are, to those who have known.Good reminders of basic things in life for an Empath.Nice tricks and techniques for self protection.

Its a great learning book about Empath. Very suggest this book. i really enjoyed this read Emotional Self Healing for the Highly Sensitive Person. I know I will be reading this over, Really enjoyed learning more.

This book is a reference manual for those who are familiar with the subject of empathy and a good book for those new to this all. The Empaths Survival Guide is a refreshing read on the subject of Empaths.

A comprehensive guidebook for anyone who wants to better understand the science behind fasting. Concise and well researched, presented in a readable format. Liked that there were links to studies

The book has some good advice and a free book too! Could use some more tips on different ways to ground and more ways to hone in to specific abilities, but it’s geeat place to start.

Really quick and great to the point read. LOVED it and recommend it.

Rating 4.5 Stars! As an avid reader, I have a very small list of my favorite authors. Today's book is by one of those authors: Secrets at Cedar Cabin by Colleen Coble is the third in her Lavender Tides series. I read the first book in this series, The View from Rainshadow Bay, and the second book, The House at Saltwater Point, so you know I've just been waiting for this book to be published since it's the end of this series.  This book was another exciting installment of romance and suspense in the Lavender Tides series! This latest book ties up a few loose story plots from the previous two books, and fills in the story of Shauna's missing siblings that started in book one. I loved that all the characters from the other two books appeared in this book too.The back story is this: An earthquake hit the town of Lavender Tides, Washington and three children were separated from each other while they were at the grocery store with their mother. The earthquake sent their mom into labor and Olivia Fleming delivered the baby girl because she was a paramedic. Unfortunately, the baby's mother died during delivery. The oldest child was Shauna, whom readers met in the first book as she was raised by her father. Shauna found out years later that her brother was adopted by a family. In this story, Secrets at Cedar Cabin, readers meet the baby girl delivered during the earthquake, Bailey Fleming, who ended up being raised by the paramedic, Olivia Fleming. Olivia was murdered and she left Bailey some money and a note that she is in danger for her life as well. Bailey has a "situation" involving her rock star husband, Kyle Bearcraft, who seems to already be married to someone else. To keep her from telling her story with the media, Kyle gives Bailey the deed to a house in Lavender Tides, the Cedar Cabin. When someone tries to kill Bailey, she leaves Rock Harbor, Michigan and heads to Lavender Tides and to Cedar Cabin. Bailey is a great character in this story and once she arrives in Lavender Tides, she finds out more of her life has been a lie than she knew. She learns that her cabin has been used for human trafficking, which then brings FBI agent Lance Phoenix into her life. Lance has been working the case to try and rescue his sister, Ava, who was taken by the human trafficking ring when she ran away from home. Lance wonders if Bailey's story is even true when he crosses paths with her, and if she can somehow bring him in touch with his sister. I can't say whether or not this book would serve as a stand alone, having read the others before it. I would, though, recommend reading the first two in the series before beginning this one so that you can understand the backstory of all the characters and what is happening in their lives to bring them all to the point they find themselves in during this book. I was very pleased how all the loose ends from the entire series were tied up by the last page of this book!I was provided with a complimentary electronic advanced reader copy from Thomas Nelson through Net Galley in exchange for my post.  I was not required to write a positive review, but because this was another great book, I wanted to do so! The opinions I have expressed are my own!

Like every novel by Colleen Coble, you need a spreadsheet to remember all the charactees and their connection. This book seemed to wrap up the loose ends from all the previous installments. I highly recommend stockpiling the books in the series and reading them in order, one after another, so that you can keep track of the multitudinous characters. Good story.

This has been a great series, filled with romance and suspense that never stopped! Bailey and Lance met when she was a suspect in his eyes. She had been lied to for her entire life and now doesn’t know who or what to trust. Lance is an FBI agent who’s trying to bring down a human trafficking organization and has been searching for his sister who was taken several years earlier. This story kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat! I’d recommend this to anyone who likes a little romance and a lot of suspense! With God on our side, the very real human trafficking epidemic will be stopped.

I discovered ms Coble several rears ago when I read Aloha Reef Series! I was hooked! I started buying everything book she authored. She’s amazing in keeping one riveted to the story. Love how characters are carried into other books of series. My other favorite is the Rock Harbor Series.Lavender Tides does not disappoint. I you can, start with book one and read in order. There is the usual suspense, suspension, mystery, heart stopping moments, and fast paced action in this story as wellHighly Recommend

I got Secrets at Cedar Cabin yesterday and just finished it this evening -- I'd have been done sooner but I had a meeting this morning. It was hard to put it down. There's not been one of Colleen Coble's books that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed, and this was another winner. It dealt with a sad reality of our world, human trafficking. The personal tragedies of that mixed with some mystery, romance, and (spoiler a!ert!) daring rescue attempts combine into an amazingly good story.

The third book in the Lavender Tide series was as great as the previous two books. You just cannot put the book down it's so great. I love Colleen's many other books. They always keep you engrossed in the story. With this book, it makes you stop and think about the real like unfortunate sex trafficking that takes place all around us. Perhaps it just might save some person's life before getting caught up in it.

Excitement, secrets, lies, intrigue you to keep turning the pages to get to the truth of this great story. I could not read this book fast enough. Colleen is a master storyteller and this will not disappoint any reader who loves her books. One of the best I have read!!

I loved this book. I enjoyed Bailey being introduced as the lost sister. l wish there would have been a little more explanation as to the relationship between Olivia and Kile. This book really shows when you lie you are opening yourself up for trouble because one lie can lead to another then another and another. Until you don't know what the real truth is.

Review

Mismatch is a powerful read that not only has the potential to change the way we approach design but also serves as a strong check to our ingrained assumptions about how and why people move, act, speak, and interact (or dont).―Gray MagazineDesigning for inclusion is not a feel-good sideline. Holmes shows how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies. It can be a catalyst for creativity and a boost for the bottom line as a customer base expands. And each time we remedy a mismatched interaction, we create an opportunity for more people to contribute to society in meaningful ways.―800-CEO-READ

Kat Holmes shows us how to make inclusion a source of innovation. An important read for anyone who aspires to build great products for the greatest number of people.―Satya Nadella, CEO, MicrosoftDesign shapes our human experience. As software changes our world, inclusive thoughtful design will be even more important. In this absorbing and important book, Kat Holmes lays out clear steps and the role we can each play to overcome bias and create inclusive design.―Victoria A. Espinel, CEO of BSA | The Software AllianceKat Holmes's approachable book, Mismatch, calls to tech industry leaders and designers to create inclusion by making a world that invites all of us to participate and benefits everyone. Designing for the future, Holmes convinces, requires designing for human diversity. Mismatch is a manifesto, a primer, and a rousing invitation for everyone in the design and production process to become inclusion experts who will collectively make a better, more effective, and more just world for us to share.―Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Professor of English and Bioethics at Emory University, author of Extraordinary Bodies and Staring: How We LookDesign at its best gladdens our lives, and shapes the way we experience the world―but it can limit that experience, too. Counters may be too elevated for someone in a wheelchair, and playgrounds built solely for able-bodied children a trial for those who can neither run nor climb. Even a magical faucet, built to flow at the wave of a hand, is ill suited for the blind. In Mismatched, a crusading and important look at how design can frustrate and even alienate users, Kat Holmes compels us to be more inclusive. She shows us that design requires not only ingenuity but humility. It must solve problems, yes, but it must also work with those excluded to reimagine and improve their experiences.―Caroline Baumann, Director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

During the early days of my career within product creation at Nike, the maxims of Simply & Go, The Consumer Decides, and Be A Sponge were constantly reinforced. With Simplify and Go, we were encouraged to trust the expertise of others and ask questions when we did not know the answers. The Consumer Decides urged us never take them for granted and maintain a wide on-going dialogue sharing ideas and insights (back and forth) in order to truly understand their individual perspectives. Be A Sponge was, above all else, maintaining curiosity. Opening your eyes, ears and heart, and constantly look all around you.All of these are still relevant when approaching design but what Kat Holmes amplifies in Mismatch is the need to dive a bit deeper, reach out a bit farther, talk and listen a bit more and maybe work slightly harder. We need to step outside our comfort zone in order to grow individually and also to improve upon a products own design elasticity. Those who have lived through exclusion have extraordinary insights that highlight the biases in current solutions and approaches. They need to be equal partners in our exploration and process.Kat reinforces the idea that we, as designers, developers, product managers, all have the power to make change happen. If we think about disability as mismatched interactions versus a personal health condition, we can establish a new and profound mindset. A new approach that when designing for inclusion, we ultimately are designing for uncertainty and our future selves. There is also business justification rooted in an inclusive process but most importantly, its designing product with clear intent and purpose that makes things a bit better so that more people can play.

Don’t enter this book thinking it’s about coding accessible websites or meeting WCAG guidelines in a product. It’s so much more than that. Mismatch is an info-rich guide to aligning your priorities and practice to creating better solutions by including more people. Step out of the accessibility-as-a-checklist mind and into a truly inclusive ethos. Great for designers, developers, business people, and really anyone interested in creating a just offering in the world.

If you make products and can’t answer ‘who am I excluding’, you should read this book. Every day people have to adapt to make products work for them. You’re one of those people. Think about it: we all experience challenges with objects in our lives because of permanent or temporary disabilities. Kat provides a framework for identifying exclusion and tools to make products that allow everyone to use them. She shares stories and anecdotes that help connect the methods described. Mismatch is an excellent guidebook for anyone creating experiences for customers.

Without ostracizing, Mismatch is able to maintain neutrality and present concrete ideas and concepts of how the design of systems, technology, products, and the environment surrounding them shape our world and the people within it using past and present examples.Kat Holmes, essentially creates a glimpse into the future of further exclusion and how designers, meaning anyone who creates solutions for the public, can exclude a specific population of consumers if inclusive design isn’t prioritized during the design process. The way she poses questions to archaic ways of designing, sheds light on how change is needed to break the cycle of exclusion today. I personally appreciate how meaning, value and inclusivity is given to the profession of inclusive design, highlighting the skills necessary to define who can become an inclusive designer.A thought provoking voice.

When a book is so full of quotable passages that you are compelled to flag almost every page, you know you've met a thoughtful writer whose message is clear. What I appreciate most about this book is that Kat Holmes makes you care about inclusive design – whether you're a designer or not, or work in tech or not – because it's not only good for the products and services that companies make, but it's also good for us as communities and as a society. Learning about the inclusive design method will change how you think about, well, everything.

An excellent short book in the Simplicity series curated by John Maeda (all of the books I have read in this series are excellent). This book can change ho you approach design. It can also change how you support life. Kat Holmes (who pioneered this work while at Microsoft) proposes three design principles: (1) recognize exclusion, (2) learn from diversity, (3) solve for one, extend to many. These are not only good design principles. They are a guide to how to interact in many social and organizational situations. Next time you are at a party or in a business meeting, look to see who is being excluded and what that means about the group dynamics. Look at who you exclude in your daily life and ask why.One of the best parts of this books is the stories of designers who have used various disabilities as a way to transform design. An example, imagine being a gamer who does not have use of their hands, and who cannot use a game controller. How would that change how you play games. How would it change the games you design? The story of the design of US fighter cockpits is telling. Back in the 1940 as jets were being introduced they were designed to fit the average pilot. How many of us are average on all dimensions? None of us. So a set of controls designed for the average suited no one. The results was a lot of accidents, many fatal. The cockpits were later redesigned to be adjustable so that each pilot could fit the cockpit to their own size and preferences.I will be getting copies for all three of my kids (all of whom work in design fields) and expect to reread this book several times.

This was my 1st Julie Garwood book and I loved it. It was a easy read since I love historical romances! The characters were easy to fall in love with and the story line had enough twists in it to keep it interesting. It took a little getting used to reading how women were treated back then but a good read all the same! I'm looking forward to reading the sequel "Ransom" next.

I loved this book years ago and decided to read it again to see if I still felt the same way. I do!When 4 year old Lady Judith met 5 year old Francis Catherine at a festival held on the border between Scotland and England, they had no idea that their friendship wasn't supposed to happen. For years afterward they would meet each summer at the games and it was if they had never been separated. After they got older, Francis Catherine told Judith of her fear that she would someday die in childbirth like her mother and grandmother. She had Judith promise that she would be there when she gave birth. Judith immediately began learning all that she could of childbirth so that she could be helpful when the time came. Years later, she makes the trip to the Scottish Highlands to be with her friend as she waits to give birth. Of course, being English, she was not initially welcomed into the community where Francis Catherine lived. Is this story well represented by historical facts? No, not at all. Does it bother me? Nope. This isn't a time period that I prefer and I know little about it. I do realize that it is 'cleaned up' a bit and that is okay with me. Why do I like it? I loved the heroine's "Hey, you're not going to stop me" attitude. I really like a dark, brooding hero with a soft heart who wants what is best for his people. And I really, really loved the intense friendship between the two girls. And, as always, I love Garwood's gift for humor and witty dialogue. I'm so glad that I reread this book and will likely read it again in a few years.Sexual situations may offend some readers

An audio review.I loved The Secret and after listening to it for the first time and re-reading it for the 20 billionth time, I think I love it more.Judith is a strong and feisty English woman whose best friend is a Scot. When she's asked to attend her friends birthing of her first child, she does not hesitate to pack her bags.Ian is Laird and as a favour to his brother offers to collect the English woman. Ian thinks his brother is daft giving in to his woman and scoffed at his devotion and need to make her happy. When the two meet there is an instant attraction, but a Scottish Laird and an English lass is not a good alliance.Judith has a secret that could ruin everything. Ian knows that by taking an English bride he's asking for trouble...but can't seem to stop himself. Only the two of them can decide if their love is worth the sacrifice.I laughed so hard at this one and got some very strange looks on the train. I'm pretty sure I had a goofy grin on my face for most this one.The storyline is captivating, the characters lovable and the love story enough to make me sigh. I will definitely be listening to more in the future.

When I was in high school (20 years ago), I really loved Julie Garwood books. I guess I've grown out of them because this one was so formulaic it bordered on boring - I find that almost all romance books I read these days are ridiculous to me. Here's the formula:Take 1 tall, muscular, perfect looking manTake 1 small, beautiful womanmix in a little spirit and boldness for the womanmix in some chauvinistic "I'm here to protect you" for the manThis creates a whole lot of "lust at first sight"also required is traveling outside together for long distances - riding on the same horse with the woman in front of the man - camping outdoors (where the woman apparently never needs to pee)now add in some scowling for the hero and some hurt feelings for the ladywhich of course turns into "I'm in love with you and want to marry you" after just a week. Now - once they're married and things seem to be going well, add in a misunderstanding, or a secret, or one of them not telling their plans to the other person. This results in some sort of danger for the perfect heroine in which the man has to rescue her, and then they ride off together and realize again how much they love each other. Make sure all of this happens in just a month or two. Almost always end your book with the heroine realizing she's pregnant (although it didn't' happen in this book).Seriously - this is the plot of 90% of historical romances. Why can't anyone do something different!

This book actually started with a bit of fun. Two little girls who didn't know they should hate each other one being English and the other being Scottish become fast friends. They nurture their friendship through the years making each other a promise to come in the time of need. When Judith begins her travels to Scotland with men sent to retrieve her to help her see her friend she starts falling in love with the chieftain Iain. It's all possessive attitude, growling and arrogance galore. I liked Judith because she was so unburdened by this hatred to all things Scottish, she saw the world as it should be not as it wass and always tried to help others. She breathed fresh air into Maclean clan and brought needed changes.Iain Maclean is a typical male of his time - demanding, stubborn and sinfully good-looking. But there are moments when he is tender and understanding with Judith that make me think that deep down he can be a softie if only for his wife. This was funny at times sweet historical romance. It did feature a myriad of ancient ridiculous beliefs that I loved reading about. So I recommend it! I liked it!
