Easily readable and includes much of the last two decades’ new scholarship. . . . Especially good at . . . placing Bonnie and Clyde in context.” —Bryan Burrough, The New York Times Book Review“A rollicking read, an astonishing story of perseverance in the face of hopelessness, and a perverse tale of two lovers whom only death could part.” —Mark Dunkelman, The Providence Journal“Guinn cuts through the sex and gunsmoke surrounding the gangster love story of Bonnie and Clyde. . . . We have had first rate biographies on other infamous characters, and we finally have one on Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. They didn't receive the respect they longed for from their peers in their time period such as John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd, and Clyde Barrow expressed disappointment when a young boy didn't know who they were when he came upon them in a field the day before they died in a hail of bullets. I have read several other biographies of mobsters and bank robbers, but the antics of both Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker illustrate anything but a glamorous lifestyle. They lived hand to mouth with their petty robberies that netted them enough for a few meals, and frequent changes of stealing a variety of cars, preferably Fords. Clyde once wrote a letter to Henry Ford praising the virtues of a Ford automobile. I didn't realize that Bonnie didn't receive top billing in their names until the 1967 release of the movie entitled "Bonnie and Clyde" which was an entertaining movie, but short on the facts. Clyde's reckless driving caused an accident in which acid from the car's battery leaked onto Bonnie's leg making it necessary for Clyde to often carry Bonnie rather than have her walk. The terrible twosome were betrayed by cohort Henry Methvin and his father in exchange for a pardon for Henry. However, Henry spent eight years in prison, not being released until 1942. If you collect true crime books this will fill a void in your library. Besides, this book is recommended by Rick Mattix an authority on mobsters. What more could you want?

I just finished this book for the second time, and I enjoyed the read better than the first one. I've long been an enthusiast of 1930s crime books and articles and have read almost everything I could find on Bonnie and Clyde. There are several books about the couple: many of them simply rehash what's been said time and time again; a couple written by B&C family members are obviously biased toward the two criminals, sometimes outright lying; a few, however are excellent, offering new information gained from primary research and a fresh perspective. Guinn's book tops them all. His research is meticulous, and he leaves very few questions unanswered--if any.His covers every shootout, big and small, with great care to get the who shot whom, who missed, how bad were the wounds, etc. correct. It is a huge plus that the man is a very good writer. He brings the events to life--even the ones you've read about many times before. I guarantee that you will find bits and pieces throughout the entire book that you never knew--regardless of how much you think you know about the pair. The climax is, of course, the ambush in which Bonnie and Clyde are gunned down. There's a good chance you've read about it and/or seen it depicted in film and on TV. As good or far-fetched as other accounts may be, Guinn gets it right. From the weapons each of the six posse members used, where, precisely, they were positioned: how many feet apart--Guinn has done his homework and has left nothing uncovered--to who fired first, whose bullet hit which victim and, perhaps most importantly, who fired the final shots into an already dead or dying, Bonnie Parker.Guinn goes further than researching their lives, crimes, and era; he offers keen insight into what Clyde or Bonnie was probably thinking at a certain juncture, why a life was spared or taken, what was running through Frank Hamer's mind before, during, and after the ambush. The author brings everything together and does a remarkably fair job throughout. He leaves no detail out, narrating each moment of each crime to let us see the ugliness, senselessness, and tragedy. And he shows the monster that Clyde Barrow often was. But he also reveals Barrow as a man who cared deeply for his family and Bonnie and who, at least in his own mind, lived by a moral code. Guinn offers no excuses for Bonnie and Clyde. Was society partly to blame for Barrow's decision to become a career criminal? Before you answer, read the chapters about Clyde's incarceration in Huntsville prison and how he lost one job after another because of his past crimes. There is no easy answer, and Guinn knows this. He allows the reader to make up his or her own mind.I recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested any facet of crime and/or the Depression era. It is, for now, the last and best word on the Bonnie and Clyde story.

I read about 12 to 15 non-fiction books a year. Many are about America's famous criminals. Author Guinn uses words in such a way that I felt as though I really knew Bonnie and Clyde after finishing the book. His research is incredible. If you want a big picture of the lives of these two desperadoes then this is the book you should read. The book details what caused Bonnie and Clyde to get into stealing. Some of the details that happened to them are alarming at best. It is a good read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about how famous criminals operated back in the days of the Depression and beyond.Norman Jones, Ed. D. author of Main St. vs. Wall St.: Wake-up Calls for America's Leaders

This the second book by Jeff Guinn that I have read. The other was the one about Wttatt Earp and tha OK Corral gun fight - The Last Gunfight.I had never read a book about Clyde abd Bonnie, and after this one I will never read another. This one has enough information, credibility and imparciality. It is enougg to reas one book about a bunch of muderous criminals who worth less than one cent of a dollar.Goog book. But the ambush was brutal.

This is a very academic textbook, suitable mostly for the undergraduate level in economics (I can not imagine an advanced degree candidate not already being familiar with Prof Knight's expositions not only having read Knight for themselves, but for the inclusion of Knight's work in other more up-to-date material). I had not read Knight before, notwithstanding that I have a BA degree in economics, but my studies were from the era of "early Samuelson". Knight treats his subject exhaustively because it was groundbreaking theory and practice in his time. A lot of progress has been made since then. I still find that there is not a lot of attention paid by journalists and even academics as to the important difference between RISK and UNCERTAINTY which bears upon PROFIT. For the uninformed, risk is measurable and uncertainty is not. Thus, risk can be accepted or declined (for instance by hedges or insurance) by the party at risk. Uncertainty offers no such alternative. That is why uncertainty in public policy, such as tax changes, regulatory action and entanglements with the judiciary are anathema to business. This results in an impediment to investment, and thus to growth of GDP. Congress does not seem to understand and no one points this out -- to the Congress or the public. We have almost total ignorance in one political party about the results of progressivism, which is dangerous all by itself.

This is a terrible reproduction. Large portions of the book are incomprehensible. This is a typical paragraph: "as has been argued, which forms the basis of a V jralid theory of profit and accounts for the divergence be* fcween actual and theoretical co mpetitijon"!

This is one of the most important books on economics written in the 20th century. Frank Knight was tasked by his PhD advisor to sort out the differences between risk and uncertainty and how they related to entrepreneurship and firm management. He did. Nobody has surpassed this treatment in the century since Frank Knight penned it in 1917 as his doctoral dissertation. This is verbal treatment of the subject, not a mathematical treatise. The argument is sound, but often subtle. The current volume that I am reviewing is the sixth or seventh time I have read the book and, as always, I found something new to take away. I teach entrepreneurship to undergraduates and to graduate students and i enjoy bringing Knight's insights into the classroom.

Knight's book is, of course, a classic that every economist should read. But the Cosimo Classics ebook edition is poorly done, so I would recommend buying it in print.

After reading Rita Gunther McGrath's "End of Strategy" and re-reading Drucker's "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" it became clear to me they are both talking about "uncertainty". Not the kind that can be quantified with a probability distribution (and hence insured against) but the kind that cannot. Which brought me to Frank Knight and his analysis of the relationship among risk, uncertainty and profits. It is an excellent book and very rewarding to read - but the early 20th century style of prose is hard to read and requires quite a bit of concentration.

I have to admit this was a hard book to read. Partly because of the old fashioned language, but largely because it challenges popular beliefs that have continued to plague economics since the time of this writing almost a century ago.The mental rigor demonstrated by the author is extraordinary in presenting a working model of the social world we live in; tying economics, epistemology and politics together. This is not light-reading, but the effort is justified for anyone interested in the workings of the socio-economic fabric of our society.

Knight's Risk,Uncertainty and Profit(RUP) is a classic work ,especially with respect to Knight's analysis of the distinction between risk and uncertainty and the role each plays in the decision making calculus of the entreprenuer or the firm. For instance,Knight recognized that the negative impact of uncertainty could be reduced for those firms that were able to increase their size and get larger and larger over time.Advertising would allow firms to deal with the uncertainty of consumer responses to the introduction of new products over time ,as well as to changes in consumer preferences.Knight was the first to clearly recognize that economic profit is the return to the successful entreprenuer or owner of the firm to compensate them for the bearing of uncertainty.Knight's analysis of the connection between uncertainty and economic profit corrected the errors of Ricardo and Marx, who regarded economic profit as an unearned surplus .Keynes's integration of expected economic profit into the specification of his aggregate supply function,Z,where Z =P+wN(P equals expected economic profit),can be traced back to Knight's earlier discussions. It is strange that economists still are having trouble specifying Keynes's Z function nearly 70 years after the publication of the General Theory in 1936.However,Knight's theoretical analysis of uncertainty at both the micro and macro level is not as impressive as Schumpeter's analysis of uncertainty in his Theory of Economic Development(1912)or of the path breaking analysis of John Maynard Keynes in chapters 6 and 26 of the A Treatise on Probability(1921).In this latter book,Keynes operationalized a quantitative method of dealing with uncertainty(insufficient weight of the evidence,w)by means of his conventional coefficient of risk and weight,c.This coefficient allows a decision maker to incorporate uncertainty and nonadditive probabilities into a technical analysis of decision making. The only author who comes close to Keynes is D.Ellsberg with his practically identical index to measure ambiguity called rho. There are still some unanswered questions that can be asked in this area of economic thought. Why didn't Knight cite the earlier work of Joseph Schumpeter on the risk versus uncertainty distinction?Further, why didn't Keynes cite both Knight and Schumpeter in his chapters 12 ,17 and 22,where he discussed the issue of the effect of uncertainty on investment in new capital goods and on stock market speculation?

A VAST MACHINE is an excellent historical review of meteorology/climatology.However, mathematical treatment of fluid dynamics is very complex. The advent of computers has greatly enhanced weather prediction and analysis, but even today in meteorology five to six days forecasts are at best are only eighty to eighty five percent accurate. Forecasting years ahead, as in climatology are, in my estimation, only educated guesses. We simply don't have a comprehensive enough data base, in climatology, for dependable forecast analysis even with computer models. Although Mr.Edwards presents his case admirably, I am not convinced we are ready to forecast climate with any degree of accuracy now or in the foreseeable future.

"Probably the best overview book about the workings of meteorology and climatology, this book also serves as a refresher course for people in the business. As a "seasoned" climatologist, reading this book was like visiting an old friend, and meeting all the children and descendants. His book, as he puts it, presents "an historical account of climate science as a global knowledge infrastructure". As such, it's a must read for anyone new to climatology as it give not only a useful history of the development of the systems we rely upon (WMO, WWW, GCOS, WCRP, IPCC, etc) but also puts to to rest some past controversies (myth of cooling, the MSU errors, bias removal in GHCN). I was impressed by Edwards' use of recent papers by Peterson, Karl, Easterling, well blended with older works references by Smagarenski, Sagen, Manabe. And of course his good friend, the late Schneider is there throughout.Edwards makes the point that it is through models that we revamp our knowledge about climate, whether these are simulation models based on physical theory, reanalysis models that blend observations with forecast simulations into uniform global data, or data analysis models that produce coherent data from heterogeneous, time-varying information. Climate knowledge works like historians work; there is always more to learn about the past. The book suffered a bit, I think, from not using Zillman's excellent (and short!) history of climate progress (though I might have missed it in the 67 pages of references! A time line of the decades of progress in understanding climate change, from GARP, Villach, Espoo, Rio, etc. would have helped.I especially enjoyed the description of reanalysis (chapter 12), the summary of pre-19th century observations, and best of all, the Greek derivation of climate - klima - from "inclination" - the slant of the suns rays with latitude with the tilt of the earth. Best of all, I see that Edwards has a degree in "Science, Technology, and Society" - exactly the course of study my son is following - along with an engineering degree. If Edwards' book is any guide, this is certainly what we need more of.I'd be remiss if I didn't add that Edwards includes useful, dispassionate, historical references to S. Fred Singer's questionable work in fighting the science of climate change, acid raid, and the ozone hole! Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose".A Vast Machine: Computer Models, Climate Data, and the Politics of Global Warming

The Author revisits the definitions of infrastructure and data at depths that I personally have not encountered before and his articulations have considerably enriched my understanding of both these concepts and helped me better perceive their roles in several fields: infrastructure in the area of networking and data in the field of climate science. Having read this book I now perceive infrastructure as including perceptual structures that influence and constrain our perceptions and I understand data as being generated through perceptual processes. The authors portrayal of the meteorological weather forecasting networks enables the perception of their growing across the face of earth and linking up to form a global network that generated the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 and the Inter governmental Panel on Climate Change in 1988 gives a clear portrayal of the rising of a Global Network of scientists capable of perceiving planetary processes and providing the human species with strategic guidance. These perceptions and their articulation are nested in a bed of very deep and detailed information regarding data, data generating methodologies and processes as well as significant events that every serious student of climate sciences will benefit from familiarizing themselves with.

An excellent and clear explanation of the history of weather data collection and its interpretation and use in climate modelling, including much of relevance for anyone considering issues around big data.

I actually owned the first six volumes individually before purchasing this box set. As soon as I saw this set, I had to buy it. The box is really beautiful and perfect for storing these books. There is a difference of paper quality from the individual volumes, and each volume inside the box set is "Printed in Canada" whereas the individual volumes I own are "Printed in the United States." The paper quality feels cheaper and more flimsy, so they do have the potential to crease more readily than the individually purchased volumes. However, all the contents are the same with colored pages in the first few pages, so if you are not picky about paper and the slight difference in printing as an effect of the paper quality, then it is really a nice set with stickers and a lovely storage box. Also, the only other problem I found is the first and last volumes of this set (#1 and #6) have a little dent on the corner cover, probably from the manufacturer inserting the books in the box, and the fact that the paper quality is thinner.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, V. 11 by Naoko Takeuchi🌟🌟🌟🌟💔🎤🌙💫UGHHH. The last two books in this manga mess me up. The Sailor Star Lights are just so damn sad. This book in particular is mainly tragedy after tragedy after tragedy. But Chibi-Chibi finally appears! And we also get to see Chibi Usa in the future, along with her family, actually just living it up, which I think is pretty neat. Neptune cracks me up. Saturn brings me joy. (Ironically, too.) And Usagi—sniffles everywhere. As much as I enjoy Stars, it’s such a quick arc that it can feel rushed and a bit insane (but I also think that has a lot to do with Usagi’s state of mind). For the first half of the volume though, it’s really neat to see how every character has settled into a calm lifestyle, but as usual, that never lasts for long. A new enemy appears…and then the Sailor Star Lights come in.Seiya is a fan favorite, but I really think this volume doesn’t cover enough of Seiya for me to love her just yet. (The next volume is a different story.) In fact, I really love Seiya in this volume just because of Haruka’s reactions. (Uranus.) Haruka in particular is a lot like Seiya, which makes sense considering they are all guardians but in separate sections of the Milky Way. This volume really makes you want to dream up of all the other guardians and possibilities out there…which brings me to my next point. I LOVE that the guardians are the enemies in the final arc of Sailor Moon. I love reading about how all the “lesser” guardians are jealous and want their own planet. I love the idea of these “protectors” finally snapping and wanting to be the ones that are protected. It adds a flawed dynamic to the series I wish Takeuchi could’ve explored for ten volumes. But alas, we have two. Two great ones. (And one left.) I’m going to cry. Onto the last volume!~SATRecommended to: Sailor Moon fans (must read first 10 to understand this one), but you might enjoy Sailor Moon if you love female superheroes, galaxy-themed villains and mythology, and cheesy romance. This volume in particular also deals with severe denial and delusions.Favorite panel: Seiya and Usagi: “I’m sorry. I didn’t…intend to hurt you…” Not only is it emotionally tense but it’s a moment of awakening for Usagi to face her trauma and fears. It’s the breaking point of the arc.

I'm absolutely thrilled with my 3rd Sailor Moon manga volume! I've been reading scanned bits and pieces people have posted on the Internet for years and I'm so glad to finally be able to read the complete story. I did note some of the problems that others have mentioned, but I'm so glad to be able to read these for myself that I can easily look past it. While it would be so nice to have a perfect version, I am happy with what I've got. These volumes are thick! They are quickly read because there's not a ton of text on the pages but you'll sit and just look at the art after you've read the words. I don't want to put any spoilers in my review so I'll just say that this one picks up right where the last one left off, where the sailors are fighting Queen Beryl. In this volume we meet Chibi Usagi and the Black Moon Clan.I love all the Serenity and Endymion art and was nearly in tears almost through the whole first half. A much more dramatic and satisfying conclusion than the television series in my opinion.About to order Volume 4! I can't wait!

I'm finally getting around to collecting volumes 2-5, and this is where the manga really starts to rock; at least until Chibiusa shows up (I like her but I think that the Black Moon and Infinity arcs are better in the anime). I reread the the first volume after watching Sailor Moon Crystal (which is very good), and while I still loved it I must confess it was definitely not as good as the anime, but this is where the manga really gives the anime a run for its money. The plot never lets up, and it's quite dark at some points. I will admit that I do think it could have more comedy, and at this point the only character we really get to know apart from Usagi and Mamoru is Minako. It's because of those points that I prefer the anime; but this is still an awesome volume that every Moonie should have in their collection.

This is the best volume of Sailor Moon so far. We get to see how the Dead Moon Circus arc should have ended in all its glory. The only negative criticism is that Nehellenia's backstory isn't terribly original. It's just like Maleficent's story in Sleeping Beauty. I must confess I personally thought the anime's version was much better. But apart from that, everything else here is superior to the anime. The Amazoness Quartet are much better here, the Outer Sailors are present & to top it all off Tuxedo Mask actually helps finish off the villain. I think that last point I why I like it so much. I know he did that for the last arc but it's just so much cooler here. Anyways, this is my favorite arc of the manga, apart from the last one. That's right the next 2 volumes are even better. Join me next time when the manga goes out with a bang, not a whimper like the anime did.

Al Strachan was one of those guys who was feisty for a living. He was a sports writer and columnist for a variety of newspapers in Canada, mostly specializing in hockey. He appeared on such television shows as "Hockey Night in Canada," and has been around the game for more than 30 years. If you want to know what the ride was like for Strachan, "I Am Not Making This Up" is a good place to find it out in an anecdotal way.You expect some laughs in a book like this, and there certainly are some along the way. There are also stories which often have a point, but aren't funny. They're "merely" interesting. So far, so good. Strachan was usually someone who let you know where you stood. Now that he seems to be free of daily journalistic responsibilities, he's even freer to expression his opinions in such matters. His favorites and not-so-favorites come through loud and clear. For example, Wayne Gretzky and Scotty Bowman come across very well here. Ken Dryden and John Ziegler do not. Clearly, Strachan developed a good relationship with the first two, and had his problems with the last two. It's hard to say if access has clouded his opinions; Strachan pretty clearly knows Gretzky and Bowman. Dryden may never had a chance with Strachan since politically they are like Nancy Pelosi and Sarah Palin (that's Strachan in the Palin role, by the way). As for Ziegler, well, what self-respecting hockey journalist hasn't picked on him over the years? There's some score-settling here. I don't think Strachan has forgetten a slight in his career, and he sounds happy to give his side of the story here. Strachan makes some good points, too.On the minus side, if there's much organization to this book, I must have missed it. Chapter headings sometimes give a clue for a few pages, but before we know it we're headed in an entirely new direction. Meanwhile, you also won't find a quicker read in the book store. It checks in at 224 pages, and you can get through it in an evening.Hockey offers a unique blend of the American and Canadian culture, and those who have visited that world and know Strachan's work will feel pretty comfortable here. "I Am Not Making This Up" might be worth your time if you fit that description. I just wouldn't call it a "best buy" at $19.95 (American).

One of the best books I've ever read, in my top five of all time, and I'm an English professor, so you know I've done some reading. I believe I read it in a matter of two or three hours the first time because I was desperate to know what was going to happen to Okonkwo and his kin with the invasion of European colonization. Do not be put off by what you may have heard about the violence and/or cruelty; there are a few parts where the content is a little rough, but the unflinching lack of sentimentalism - the matter-of-fact tone - makes the events tolerable. I teach a lot of folks who are older teens/early twenties, and honestly, I don't think this is a book that should be taught in high school or at the undergrad level because I think it actually helps to have some life behind you when you read it for the first time. If I knew in advance (which I never do) that I was going to have a class full of people over thirty, I would use it in a class without question. I would also say it's a must-read for men because of its powerful depictions of the conflicts between fathers, sons, and just male kinship relationships in general. Achebe also gives great insight into two strong powerful female characters, his second wife and one of his daughters, even though they have a minimal amount of page time.

In this deceptively slim and elegantly written book there are at least three stories. One is a story of traditional African village life and culture in full detail (including a glossary of African terms). This story begins late in the pre-colonial period, and occupies at least two-thirds of the book before moving almost imperceptibly into another story, that of the way in which the village people deal with the arrival of Christian missionaries and the eventual establishment of colonial authority (in this case, British). It is also a life story of Okonkwo, a traditional African warrior of that time and culture. As Okonkwo matures and moves through early adulthood, the reader learns about the events in his life that shape the man he eventually becomes. In one respect, this could be considered just another chapter in the tale of how Christianity served as seeming helpmate to European colonization of not only Africa but many natives of the New World. In this story, however, there are certain signs of early tolerance and attempts at mutual understanding. Later attitudes harden when the tolerant head of the local church is replaced by someone much more stiff-necked, setting in motion a train of events leading ultimately to tragedy. For a story so simply told and without any real complicated plot twists, there are lots of interesting things to think about. Suggestions:- The story seems short on details concerning the way in which colonial power is established—one day the whites are barely worth mentioning in marketplace chatter, and almost overnight, their presence seems to have changed almost everything. But perhaps this is exactly the way in which that story would be told from a villager’s perspective.- Tolerance is a major issue even today. Yet the villagers seemingly become victims of their own tolerant attitudes about the missionaries. If they had rejected them from the beginning, and had not allowed them to stay, things might have come out differently. By the time they recognized the destructive influence these beliefs had on their own lives, it was too late.- After a church burning, the colonial district commissioner gives village leaders a speech about the justice system the British have brought them. However, this justice system is not in evidence at that time; instead, what is visited on those leaders is summary “justice” by the commissioner, followed by corruption on the part of his henchman as their penalty is raised even further. An amazing little book with so much packed into it and so much to think about.

For a while I have wanted to write a review for this book, but I chickened out so many times because no matter what I write I will never be satisfied. This should show how important this book is to me as a Nigerian. I can no longer avoid the daunting task of reviewing it, but I'll be brief. It's part 1 of an epic tale by Chinua Achebe and it's fiction, but it's also historical. Lots of books have been written about colonization in Nigeria but this is, by far, my favorite. I'll always be grateful to Achebe for writing this book in addition to others. I highly recommend it to all and may his precious soul continue to rest in peace.

Purchased the Kindle version of this book after clicking on a google Doddle for the Author on the occasion of his birthday. Although I considered myself well read, I had never hear of the author or this particular book. Of course most of my insights into literature is based on the European centric literary bias that exist in the U.S. education system.I am grateful for google for creating a doodle for a great writer that I was not previously exposed it. The book was an easy read, although the author is Nigerian, the book is narrated in British English. The book revolves around the life of local village leader in Nigeria inhabited by the Igbo people. The story dresses the effects and influence of British colonialism and Christian on the local population.I enjoyed reading this book. Better late then never!!!
