My background: I have been building in .NET applications for 8 years, with experience in web application development, but with no experience in any MVC-style technology. This is one of the best technology books I've ever read for a technology I'm learning from scratch. The first half of the book covers the basics, then starts to build, chapter by chapter, an actual application that slowly teaches you the basics of all the concepts. This is followed up by deep dive chapters on each of those concepts that go into heavy detail. I read the first half of the book all the way through, then skipped around to topics that interested me for the last half.Adam Freeman's writing style and examples are thorough, step by step, and easy to follow. He continually states not to worry about certain topics too much in the first half, but gives you a clear reference point as to where he covers that topic later in the book in detail if you do want to skip ahead.I picked up the print version of this from amazon, but I did get the companion ebook from Apress directly (they heavily discount this on their site), which made it much easier to copy and paste in code examples.Up front, Adam includes explanations of dependency injection (showing how to use Ninject in MVC), mocking (focusing on Moq), and a bit of the Entity Framework as well, and throughout the book focuses on unit testing cases as well (though if you wish to skip these, they are clearly marked to be separated from the rest of the content). While you may be anxious to dive straight into the MVC-specific content, this really lets you practically see how to truly build your own MVC apps using industry-standard techniques.I plan on picking up the Pro ASP.NET MVC Platform book Adam Freeman is writing as soon as it is out this year, and while he makes plenty of references to an ASP.NET MVC 5 Client book he was writing in this book, I contacted Apress for a release date on that, who told me it has been put on hold indefinitely, which is a shame (Adam, if you are reading this, I'd love to get your recommendation on other resources covering the Client material to fill those gaps, if you could reply to this review). There are some complaints in the reviews here around not covering ASP.NET Identity. This is going to be covered in the Platform book due out later this year. I have purchased this book as an early access copy, and as of today (4/5/2014), the early release copy has these chapters but they are not yet formatted nicely. As noted by some comments here, Adam also indicates in this book that when the security-related chapters are ready for the Platform book, Apress will allow them to be downloaded free of charge since he does not want folks to have to buy an entire second book just to read about security.Overall, if you have C# experience but are brand new to MVC, this is absolutely the book to pick up.One small technical note: On computers that do not have older versions of Visual Studio installed, I did run into runtime errors on the examples where Ninject was looking for a System.Web.MVC v3 DLL. In order to fix this, include the following in your root directory's web.config file, just before the at the end of the file. Amazon keeps stripping out the bindingredirect line - replace the | characters with < and > instead. |bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-4.0.0.0" newVersion="4.0.0.0" /|

4/5Great book, could be better.the BAD:its not PRO, its a beginner guide, the title does not reflect the content. *could go deeper on applicable subjects like : *unit testing â—¦he drops off somewhere in the middle â—¦including (if possible) mock examples of application/session state in UT. *JQuery *Professional design *the accompanying downloaded code doesn't work out of the box, you have to update all with nuget. there is even a stack overflow blog on the subject...the ANNOYING: *"If you want a real professional example you will have to read 1-4 of my other published works coming out later this year..." Flagrant shameless plugs for his other books are sprinkled throughout this book like romano cheese on spaghetti. *You have to download a chapter from a different book if you want to know about mvc security... *Unnecessary explanations, a page dedicated the explanation of GET/SET for automatic properties i thought was odd, and not in the scope of the book... â—¦not a big deal, just a minor annoyance, he more than makes up for it with relevant explanations. *the catch 22, the book is so well written and at the same time very long... not sure if he can accomplish the same results with less text. I'd rather error on the side of caution and bite the verbosity of the book. *Chapters dedicated to optional third party tools, ehh I read it just the same...The GOOD: *Very, very well, written, he hits with remarkable consistency full explanations of his topics and his code. *Never needed to peer program (follow along with VS2013) with the book, the book's explanations were sufficient enough for me to retain comprehension without having to manually repeat the code samples provided. â—¦There were plenty of times while reading the book where I was like, "what about this situation?", and BAM! within 3 pages my questions were always answered. â—¦Other books I recall going and goggling related situations or writing POC code to study behavior, not necessary with this book. Full relevant explanations for EVERYTHING HE DISCUSSES.

Review

"Readers of all ages will...delight in this heartfelt account...I highly recommend it." --Rabbi Ron Isaacs"This beautifully illustrated book touched my soul...I can't wait to share it with my grandchildren [and to] gather them around me, as the author does, in a football huddle, to tell them 'There's No Seder Without You.'" --Rabbi Charles A. Kroloff"...a trip down memory lane, but with a refreshing and important twist...carries the spirit of Passover from one generation to the next."--Rabbi Michael P. Singer"...a beautiful tribute to the role children play in the Passover ritual." --Rabbi Allen Juda"...a sweet book..." --Rabbi Manes KoganA portion of the money received for every copy sold of No Seder Without You is going to the Yiddish Book Center (1021 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002; yiddishbookcenter.org)."That children are indeed the stars of the seder is underscored in this tender memoir of Passovers past told by a grandmother who recalls her own mother telling her, 'There is no seder without you.' Joan Goldstein Parker's account is filled with anecdotes, humor and, of course, recipes. Of special interest may be Grandma Miriam's maror--which her grandchildren claimed 'was being tested by government scientists to send rockets into space.'" --Hadassah Magazine

About the Author

Joan Goldstein Parker grew up in New York City, where the question, "Where are you going for Seder?" was always answered the same way: at her home, where three or four generations of extended family read the Haggadah and shared the meal together each year. Because it is so family-centric, the Passover Seder is her favorite Jewish tradition.Joan has been in the publishing business all of her working life. After holding executive positions in several multinational firms, she founded her own literary agency. She and her husband live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. No Seder Without You is her first book.

The Orchid Thief by Susan OrleanShe travels to FL when she reads of the arrest of John LaRoche. He and Seminole tribe members stole orchids from protected state property. Some people are obsessed with these plants. She follows them and learns all about the plants. He had hoped to clone and sell the plants. When in FL we had visited the world's largest orchid place in Kissimmee so I had wanted to read about this story.Liked the places the reporter traveled to obtain information about varieties of the orchids. Liked how the process is described on how to mutant and graft the plants.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

In 1994, John Laroche and three Seminole Indian men, were caught leaving a Florida Wildlife Preserve with bags full of Ghost orchid (Polyrrhiza lindenii) specimens. They challenged the arrest on the basis of a law allowing Native tribes to violate the endangered species act. Susan Orleans, a columnist for The New Yorker went to Florida to get the story. She befriended the weirdly charismatic Laroche, gained entry to the bizarre world of orchid collectors, and ultimately expanded the article into a book (and subsequently a movie).Ms. Orlean is as much part of this story as anyone else: she's there, she's experiencing this, and her thoughts and curiosity take us through lessons in history, evolution, geology, botany, and current orchid mania - the characters, the controversies, and the competition. Her style includes much wit and humor which makes for somewhat light reading and a few laugh out loud lines.Front and center are orchids - "a jewel of a flower on a haystack of a plant" - so evolved and diversified they've become "the biggest flowering plant family on earth because each orchid species has made itself irresistible." Orchids are "ancient, intricate living things that have adapted to every environment on earth." There are tens of thousands of varieties, and more being created by natural as well as man-made hybridization virtually every day. Orchids often outlive human beings. In fact, orchids can theoretically live forever, since they have no natural enemies.Orlean describes some extreme personalities of orchid people as an amusing side story. Some orchid owners designate a person as an "orchid heir" in their wills since the owners expect that their precious orchids will outlive them. Another reviewer commented: “This book will make you feel like the very picture of placid normalcy when compared to orchid growers.”“Laroche loved orchids, but I came to believe he loved the difficulty and fatality of getting them almost as much as the flowers themselves.” Laroche is a kindred spirit of those fellow orchid hunters of the 19th century who rescued fragile flowers in the midst of an erupting volcano in the Phillipines and a revolution in Columbia. An orchid from Burma was auctioned off in London “still attached to the human skull on which it had been found.”Southern Florida is an underlying theme. Many of us remember the famous land-scams of the 1950s and 60s. “ Florida land is elastic: you can make more of it.” (pg 122) Any dank Florida cypress swamp can be drained and remade… to look like a Tuscan village or an English town. Interesting characters appear every few pages: Snake Boy, frog poachers, Miss Seminole, Lee More the Adventurer, the Ghost Grader, Lord Mansfield, etc.The Fakahatchee Swamp is home of many wild orchids, Orlean comments wryly when plunging into brackish water up to the waist, and having to toe around for submerged alligators on the squishy bottom, "I hate being in a swamp with machete-wielding convicts."Indian rights and the Florida Seminole tribe and business interests are another side story. The legal similarities between Chief Billie and the panther and Laroche and the ghost orchids have a fine distinction. But the orchids! My thoughts are like the authors: “It’s like an explosion in a paint factory…” The flowers are interesting but the plant looks dead. “These flowers are poetic.” They are all so different. This one is speckled. “Here’s a weird shape. Look at this long tube.” The variety is overwhelming.

Just awesome! This book came onto my radar because of its starring role in Charlie Kaufman's 2002 film Adaptation. There are four main reasons this book is great:1. the primary subject John Laroche (to whom the book's title infamously but non-exclusively refers) is an extraordinarily interesting person2. the author's description of Laroche's personality as well as of her interactions/dialogue with him are amazingly written and 100% engrossing3. the secondary subject of the book is not orchids like you might expect, it is actually the state of Florida, and the author's descriptions/musings on Florida itself - its strangeness, contrasted nature, and uniqueness in particular - are wonderful4. there is an underlying theme that ties the whole book together and arises naturally from Laroche, the other orchid collectors/thieves the author meets, as well as from the author herself: it is the nature of passion; and as a result the book is brimming with psychological insights and flashes of wisdomCharlie Kaufman realized that this was more than just a book about flowers when he read it, and you will realize it too when you read it. Personally I could care less about flowers, but the flower that John Laroche was so passionate about - the ghost orchid - plays such an interesting and mysterious role in the book and is so elusive and sought after by even the author herself that by the end of the book I wanted to see one too!I highly recommend you read the book and/or watch the movie (in either order), as this is a book wholly deserving of its starring movie role. Unlike any book/movie experience I've ever had.

I loved Susan Orleans style of writing and her descriptions of places, situations and people - she really brought it to life. I now know more about orchids than I ever thought I would. That part got a bit tedious at times but I stuck with it and most of it was really interesting. There are people addicted to orchids. People who steal orchids. Orchids can be worth A LOT of money. There are hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of orchids. I love the way she wrote about the character of David Laroche. I read this because I knew the movie, "Adaptation" was based on this book. Loosely based. It was REALLY interesting to see what the screenwriter did. It barely ANYTHING like the book. I loved the ending. I also lived in Florida for three years and it all takes place in Florida so I found it interesting to hear Ms. Orleans talk about these places. I got a bit bogged down by all the details of orchid growing, the orchid business, etc. but it's worth it to persevere.

'She turned her face to the sky and snowflakes gathered on her cheeks, her eyelashes, her lips. I watched those tiny crystals land and melt. Just like the moments passing me by, they were here one second and vapor the next.'How, exactly, is one supposed to find the words for a book that captivated them so much, that one more chapter became all the chapters, and 10pm became 1am?I have no idea. But I’m going to try. Bear with me, okay? My fangirl is on a short leash and I don’t really have that much restraint . . .The book is Thresholds by Kate Canterbary. That right there should tell you something—this book is witty, winning and Walshy. Three of my absolute favorite things. It’s a journey through the holidays with this eclectic, eccentric and electric family, and there’s not a single, solitary thing about it I would change. The multiple POVs, the Christmas shenanigans, the growly, bitey boys, the smart, sassy women. All of it—perfect. As always, when it comes to Ms. Canterbary, the writing is stellar and the story completely and uttering engaging. Thresholds is a treat—a Christmas surprise—for readers of the Walsh series and it might just be my favorite holiday-themed book yet.Guys, I cannot recommend this series enough. I’ve said it again and again and again, to more people than I can remember: these books, all of them, are MUST READS. They’re like the literary version of your favorite food, or your best jeans, or your warmest blanket, or your favorite cocktail—something you crave in all kinds of moments for all kinds of reasons; something that makes you happy just by being exactly what it it. Your favorite. So, there you have it. My best attempt at explaining the why and the how of my love for Thresholds. And not just for Thresholds—for this series and its author, too.“I still can’t believe it.”“Believe what? That I know all of your defensive maneuvers?”“That you’re mine.”~ TWELVE Days of Christmas STARS ~

How do you even begin to review perfection? That is truly what this book is. For Walsh fans like myself, Thresholds is an epic Christmas gift. I have long been a fan of Kate Canterbary’s Walsh series, but she has truly outdone herself with this one.As with all Walsh books, we get a good look at the whole family as we read, but Kate has taken it to a new level, giving us perspectives from each family member (even getting Judy and The Commodore) throughout the book. That’s right, we get chapters told by each of them! While we have the overall look at an epic Walsh Christmas, we get yet another peek into each of the characters’ lives and the struggles and successes they hold. This book fulfills a few of my Walsh wishlist items (I know, I know my list is a bit long!) and leaves me with an even longer list than before. As always, the writing is smart and engaging in a way only Canterbary can pull off. The characters are true to form and the highlights abound. There were so many snort moments right along with the tears. It was funny, touching, and sexy all wrapped up in one perfectly wrapped present. If you are new to the Walsh world, this is book eight in the series. You really need to go back and read the rest of the series before you get to Thresholds to truly enjoy it in all its glory, but trust me, that is a gift in and of itself! My recommendation? Buy it, buy it now! You won’t be disappointed, unless of course you count the disappointment of it not continuing on forever...

Ms. Canterbary gave us a surprise and early Christmas present. To say I was shocked was putting it mildly, me included. She kept this nice and quiet. She wrote a blurb and she ran with it, and boy she didn't disappoint. Let me just get this out of the way, if this is your first Kate Canterbary book, then we can't be friends. I joke, but seriously, get on the bandwagon and start with Underneath it All. Also, if you start with Thresholds, well there's lots and lots of spoilers so you've been warned.Holidays with the Walshes is what I would have expected no less from this author. Full of laughs, loads of sexy times, some serious conversations, inappropriate pickup lines, some tears but most of all love. We even get a POV from Judy and the Commodore. Let's just say, I know why Will is all about the spanking lol.We get POVs from all the men and those were hysterical. Wait until you read them getting lingerie for their wives. We also get a few surprises regarding some of the relationships, no, not telling you, you have to read it for yourself. We get some new blood.Of course, author lady saves the best for last and has me patiently waiting for the story, but damn that was some ending.Join the excitement and read Thresholds!

I was searching for books on herbal tea, and was so excited to find this one! I know Paula from my time in Santa Cruz, having attended some of her workshops (and our kids went to school together). I didn't know she'd written a book, so of course I ordered it. I'm so impressed I had to give a 5 star rating for the lovely and user-friendly design, the simple, approachable recipes and the helpful "Herb-pedia" chapter, which explains each herb and the accompanying benefits. The book includes great resources for ordering bulk herbs - I'm already on my 2nd order:-)... and while my kids are asking why I've suddenly become so tea-obsessed, I'm enjoying every cup!

A beautiful book with lovely photographs, written with passion and an obvious knowledge of the various special herbs and spices used for each herbal infusion. I love that this book has a beverage recipe for every occasion and life-stage. Makes a wonderful gift. I gave a copy to a friend who told me that she had been looking for health-boosting, caffeine-free alternatives to tea and coffee. This book has the information she was looking for. Now she loves "infuse," too!

Lovely presentation, beautiful images, and enticing herbal tea recipes that I look forward to trying.

Stunning book! The photos and little details are so well thought out. Love this book and keep it out in the open to admire often.

I love the way the book was presented. Some of the herbs could not be found locally so I ordered them. If you're interested in learning about the different herbs and how to use them this is a good book to start with.

This is a pleasant, short book that covers various herbal tea blends for different physical, emotional and mental health issues. It's got beautiful photos and great ideas for growing herbs and formulating herbal tea blends. It's a basic book on herbal tea blends for the beginner and home herbalist.

This is a nice book with many different teas mixtures for many occasions and problems. Although, after purchasing this book I don't understand the different in this one and the book in the link I provided. They look like the same authors but different covers. Both books seemed to be published in 2016.https://www.amazon.com/Infuse-Paula-Grainger/dp/0600632830/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1541203058&sr=8-3

Absolutely love this book. Learned much, love the photos. Enjoyed many of the recipes.

I went to school with Kevin Gale, and heard this story from his mouth when he returned. I read this book when it was first translated from the original Hebrew and loved it. Everything in this book is true, Kevin is an honorable person and doesn't tell tales. I was thrilled to see it's being made into a movie and my old school chum's story told to an even larger audience, as it is truly a tale for the ages, an adventure you won't want to miss!

Yossi is very candid in recounting the many poor choices he made during this adventure. Several times I wondered how he came out of the circumstances alive. However, I failed to identify with him strongly because his attitude about the rainforests seemed immature to me, almost like he was going on a Disney ride rather than being equipt for survival against animals, weather, and parasites unknown to him beforehand. He was similarly immature in his connections to others, putting trust in those he ought not have and failing to make solid connections to those he should have valued better. In the Epilogue he redeemed his character very much in my eyes. (SPOILERS) Having barely survived the jungle, he came away with a love for it as a whole ecosystem. He made rainforest conservation a focus in his life and initiated several conservation sites around the world.

"Jungle” is a captivating book for explorers not just of the physical world but also of the mind.I have a personal interest in Yossy's story since I have also planned to go through the Madidi jungle. I enlisted two friends who chickened out at the last minute. My inspiration was the "Mines of King Solomon”. But recently there was a book and a movie about a related theme which is about Percy Fawcett and his search of the city of Z. Percy crossed parts of Bolivia about 6 times 100 years ago. He disappeared in Brazil to never be found again, just like Yossy's friend Marcus. The difference between Percy and Yossi is that while both got enamored of the jungle, Percy only criticised the people who hired him and paid him with gold. Yossi, on the other hand, came back to Bolivia and tried to do something beneficial for the people he encountered. The book leaves one end open and that is the disappearance of his friend Marcus as well as the mystery of his guide Karl, whose story and background remains something that in time should be known since he lived in Bolivia for over 10 years.I saw the movie and it reflects the book, but it should have been done in Bolivia. It misses natural scenarios like the so called valley of the moon.Anyway, “Jungle" is worth reading and there is something to learn.

Yossi and his companions were all dreamers looking for adventure in the jungle. Being young, naive and trusting they set off on a journey with a total stranger believing that he was a good man and would take care of them. Their experiences on the river and in the jungle are difficult to imagine surviving. Only their powerful will to live allowed Yossi and Kevin to survive. While their story is amazing, reading the book was at times tedious. The first half of the book is just walking, walking, walking thru the jungle. Day after day. Yossi's account of his journey alone in the jungle is difficult to see thru my eyes. Immersing myself into the story beside the lead character is what keeps me reading. I see what they see and feel what they feel. That just didn't happen for me here. I don't know if it is the style of writing or that so many important little details were left out to keep the length of the book manageable. This is an amazing story of his will to live and overcome so many obstacles, both physical and emotional, that should have killed him.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get the real first hand account of their journey.

There is another good one. It must be a true story. About twenty years ago, during a trip to the Bolivian jungle, I met a guide named Lazaro, on the river Beni (rio Beni), that told me about it, he claimed that he was part of the rescue team at the time. He said the title of the book in Spanish was " Regresso del (rio) Tuichi. Initially, I couldn't find an original copy of the book, however, several years later, there it was; in English, on Amazon!!!

I bought this book after watching the movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it, although it's not particularly well-written. I wish it included a map to help the reader orient him or herself while trying to follow along. My mind always went back to the movie when I was lost.

Yossi definitely has more determination than I could have ever mustered in his situation. This true account will speak volumes to you about mind over body. What a survivor!!!!

I enjoyed reading the survival portion of the book once they found themselves in that predicament, but I guess I'm just not very adventurous. The history's they encountered seemed predictable. I can't imagine wandering off into the jungle with so little training, preparation, and protection. Also, depending on a guide based only on his word and an incomplete map seems foolish to me. I tip my hat to Yossi's tenacity and life accomplishments since his jungle adventures.

The Profit of the Earth: The Global Seeds of American Agriculture

Review

“Fullilove organizes her work by seed processes—'Collection,' 'Migration,' and 'Preservation'—and adopts a dynamic, as opposed to static, stance for this sequence. She utilizes the US Patent Office and, later, the US Department of Agriculture to explore collection processes; discusses immigration and settlement behaviors of the Mennonites in late-19th-century Kansas for the circulation of seeds; and, finally, examines one aspect of seed preservation, the disturbance of the major grain monoculture, by focusing on biodiversity through invasive species. Periodically, Fullilove inserts field notes from her research to illustrate both the universal scope of seed dynamics and the trans-positioning of seeds across the globe. The net effect is to shift the focus from seeds as passive tools to vehicles reflecting political, economic, social, and cultural patterns—which is expressed well in her chapter ‘Writing on the Seed.’ Quite thought-provoking, this volume might best be directed more to advanced undergraduate and graduate readers and above. It is specifically recommended for collections in agricultural history, rural sociology, and anthropology. Recommended.” (Choice)"[A] book focused on seeds and the knowledge and expertise of many generations of farmers, especially one of this quality, serves to remind us that there is little about agriculture or food production whose origin or present character can be confined within national boundaries. . . . Fullilove’s excellent and beautifully written book tells this story, and so much more besides, and reminds us of the vital importance of history in understanding the present and why and in what ways we may not necessarily be living in the best of possible worlds." (Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences)“The Profit of the Earth takes as its premise that no matter how much human activity has narrowed this range, the history embedded in seeds can recover the biodiversity of the past, help scholars recognize the complexity of the present, and inform humanity about how to expand the possibilities of its future…. Fullilove has a knack for recovering historical subjects that, in both the literal and metaphorical sense, have been lost in the weeds. Never losing sight of the tragic dimensions of the Anthropocene, her end result cuts across the longest spans of time and the smallest dimensions of space to capture the making of an agricultural empire in its fullest historical scope.”   (Edge Effects)“Seeds are one of humanity’s earliest and best technologies. Centuries of seed selection have generated small, human-tweaked packages that deliver life, health, and beauty. The Profit of the Earth offers an insightful and engaging history of that ongoing process.” (Joyce E. Chaplin, Harvard University)“Fullilove is a genuinely original thinker whose insights transcend the boundaries between American and global history, as well as between the histories of science, technology, the environment, and capitalism. The Profit of the Earth shows how American agricultural development arose from the interactions with the natural environment—and one another—of farmers, government agencies, and entrepreneurs at home and overseas. It is a strikingly new portrait of how the United States became an agricultural superpower.” (Eric Foner, Columbia University)“How did the United States become the breadbasket of the world? In this riveting book, Mesopotamian agriculturalists, Washington bureaucrats, plains farmers, and Russian scientists create new strains of grains, appropriate ancient knowledge, conquer foreign territories, and build a powerful state in the service of agricultural power and profit. Fullilove situates a quintessential national story—the farming economy of the midwest—in a global framework, forcing us to rethink the advent of modern agriculture in the United States.” (Sven Beckert, Harvard University)In The Profit of the Earth, Courtney Fullilove offers something different: an ambitious and creative study that uses the story of seeds to ask readers to rethink the origins of American agricultural exceptionalism. The central narrative examines the nineteenth-century institutions that allowed the nation to become a major breadbasket of the world… Fullilove argues that recovering knowledge systems and landscapes lost during agricultural modernization will prove imperative in our own era as many across the globe face food scarcity in the face of climate change. While this book is a fine addition to the history of seeds, it is also a prompt to learn from more diverse, inclusive, and traditional systems of agricultural knowledge. (Agricultural History)"Seeds are more than simply vessels for commodity-crop DNA; they are repositories of human history. This is Courtney Fullilove’s central message in this book about the evolution of Americans’ perceptions and practices regarding collection and preservation of seed. Fullilove shows how custodians of seeds, including nineteenth-century government officials at the US Patent Office and twenty-first century scientists in Norway’s Global Seed Vault, created germplasm catalogs that erased sociocultural histories of agricultural laborers. . . . Showing how scholars might read seeds as historical objects is the primary objective of this provocative and well-researched book that draws on diverse archival resources as well as field investigations in Armenia, Syria, and beyond." (Environmental History)"Fullilove advocates a cultural history of seeds. If, she argues, we see seeds as products of biological evolution and stochastic processes, which we have enhanced through science, the resulting narrative will be linear and progressive. Her goal is to show that the history of agricultural expansion is as complicated, circuitous, and messy as human history. . . . Fullilove opens a window onto the cultural, political, and economic history that lies behind the creation and transmission of seeds and thus places the history of life sciences within the broader context of American territorial expansion and economic growth." (Isis)"In this remarkable first book, Courtney Fullilove uncovers the many layers of forgotten and ignored history that tell the complex story of the origins of wheat. Fullilove’s key insight is that this history is neither linear nor easily known, but rather reflects the constantly changing circumstances of farming over the last ten thousand years and over much of the globe."
