This book became a powerful go-to favorite for meditations over the course of several days...that then expanded into discussions with friends. It was the only book I took with me on a two-week backpacking trip, where I read one meditation each day. If you let this book's message seep into your pores, you will never hear Jesus' words the same way again. The translation of The Lord's Prayer is mind blowing....SO different from the English version I learned as a child and have said throughout my 60+ years. Suddenly this prayer we learn as kids is transported to connections with eastern mysticism -- very plausible connections, and particularly poignant today when the world would benefit from understanding different spiritual traditions. The translation of The Beatitudes takes these foundational words for Christianity to a new level of depth that is both challenging and inspirational. There is enough in this little book to keep me spiritually growing for the remainder of my days on this earth. Not an exaggeration.
a very important book everyone ought to read this to learn the true authentic interpretation of the Lord's Prayer.I bought a copy to give to my kundalini yoga teacher who is having conversation with her next door neighborabout the Lord's Prayer and it's meaning. I told her you have to have this book to explain from the position of authoritywhat is truly meant by the prayer. Her next door neighbor is "a born again Christian," who is open to learning the Aramaicinterpretation. Thanks to Neil Douglas-Klotz we know that "Our Father who art in Heaven" can be understood to mean- "Oh Birther of the Cosmos from whom each breath comes," or "Father Mother God," for example. What a book!!!!
This book was recommended to me by a new friend whom I met at the memorial service for a mutual friend. We sat outside, gathering ourselves to drive home after an emotional experience, and shared different spiritual traditions. (Our friend was quite the ecumenical person and an involved and gentle learner.) We were talking about the original languages of ancient writings and how they translate to modern context. It never occurred to me Aramaic was the native tongue of Jesus, so I was curious and ordered this book immediately. As is my habit with texts of this type, I read a page or two a day. I appreciate the author's effort, am so unschooled I have nothing to compare it to for accuracy, but ultimately was affected more by the concept than uplifted by the words.
The Aramaic was a land based religion and way of life. Then the Aramaic was translated into Greek which is intellectual and the original meaning was lost. I wanted to forgive someone in my life and just "forgiving" did not accomplish what I wanted in the depth of the possibility of forgiveness. I wanted to forgive and move on with nothing left in my mind. This book has richness in the Aramaic language that spoke to my heart. In the Aramaic Lord's Prayer, on the page that is "forgive us our debts" is so rich in the many ways we need to forgive ourselves and to unravel the "tangled threads" of a relationship gone south. My ability to forgive is transformed. I now have a pathway to forgiveness that works for me.
The book claims to be a translation of the Lord's Prayer from the original Aramaic. I doubt this, for one because the closing "For thine is the kingdom, etc..." has been included as also translated and I believe this was a *much* later addition and therefore wouldn't have been in the original for the author to translate! However, the "interpreted" material is deep, thought-provoking, and wonderful, so I can appreciate it in my meditations.
It makes so much sense to me to meditate on the root meaning of the words Jesus spoke in his own language. This book really speaks to my heart in a deep way and I highly recommend it. For anyone who is on the fence about trying it out, you might consider this: remember that old game where children get in a circle and the first one whispers in the next child's ear some message, and it goes around the entire circle this way until the last child states "the message" out loud? It was always comical how different the original message was when the first child revealed what he or she had actually said. Repetition in human hands isn't always 100% accurate. The bible has undergone many transformations over the years- translations that filtered its meaning through major cultural, political and language bias. If you are even a little bit curious about returning to the language that Jesus spoke and meditating on "The Lord's Prayer" and "The Beatitudes" give yourself the gift of this beautiful book.
In my Youth and on to today I have always heard and known prayers within me that were much deeper and did not align with the church. I felt there was a deception or misinterpretation in many of the prayers offered by Yah Shua (Jesus) and also throughout the Bible. I was gifted in my younger years to receive the ability to speak in many languages of the Earth and many of the Cosmos. When I discovered this work by Neil Douglas Walsh I found someone that heard the prayers in the same manner I did. Not exactly, but close enough to gain the same feel. I highly recommend this book, not as a way to undo the church for its past, but to strengthen your own knowledge of how much deeper Yah Shua's teachings were and are...
This book along with his other books are expansive. Klotz' translations of what Jesus said are magnified by his use of the ancient Aramaic language which opens up the mystical teaching of the Christ. Refreshing, we so need to know what Jesus said in his own language. Beautiful!
