This is a fantastic book if you have even a passing interest in the wild mustangs that call America home. The photos attached are from my own day spent in Utah looking for wild mustangs, who ran as soon as I stopped my car for a few photos. My own interest in horses and mustangs is from an outsider's perspective. I prefer dogs, but have a friend who owns several mustangs through the adoption program that the BLM has, and they are all fantastic animals. When I saw this book I was eager to learn more and immediately bought it.David Philipps admits he's not much of a horse person, but instead an outdoor person. I feel that exactly because he is NOT a horse person is what allows this book to be fantastic. He is distant enough from the subject to be able to look at it clearly and question everything people explain to him without resorting to the tried and true favorite phrase of people "its tradition". He doesn't just trust the horse people who tell him that the horses belong there and the BLM is awful, he does research and exposes flaws while giving credit when it is due. He doesn't just take the story of the ranchers at face value that they have more of a right to the land than the horses. No one in this book is portrayed as the villain or the hero. Everyone is a shade of gray, and I appreciate that. The fact Philipps is able to portray humans as they are makes him all the more trustworthy as he reports his findings. We all have our own interests that we pursue and in the middle of all that, there are horses just trying to survive in wild horse country. In the end, for Philipps he proposes we stop killing the predators, specifically cougars, and let nature sort out the horse problems on her own dime instead of rounding up horses at tax payer expense while killing cougars also at tax payer expense. Once she's done, we can do a little spot cleaning in the places it didn't work perfectly. A solution, my predator loving self can get behind. I've heard the same thing Philipps heard "horses have no natural predators" and it always felt wrong. A pack of wolves can take down a full grown (but slightly weakened) bison, your horse is not special. I'm not going to lie that I felt a little vindicated when he discussed the current mountain lion/horse studies being done. Whatever we decide as a nation, we also need to accept that the current solution is not an actual solution.
Excellent, unbiased research and well-reasoned proposed solutions to the "wild-horse problem". The level of mis-management by those charged with ensuring the welfare of our wild horses is mind-blowing. This thought-provoking book, should be required reading for all Americans as one would have to be naive to not consider that the lack of cooperation between competing Federal & local agencies, refusal to implement scientifically proven methods to resolve the problem, pandering to special interests by high ranking officials and criminally wasteful spending of taxpayer money is limited to this single issue. This reader is left with one question -- if Mr. Philipps had the wherewithal as an impartial, private individual to talk with folks on all sides of the issue to uncover these facts and solutions...why is our government still wearing blinders on how to resolve the problem and uphold the intent of the 1971 Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act?
Most Americans love that there are still wild horses running free, but few of us realize the peril they are in due to mismanagement and lack of funding. We need to step up and get involved if these awesome creatures are to saved! This book is important and heartwrenching with lots of information. I hope all who love History and Horses will read it. Five Stars!
As an advocate of the Wild Mustangs and Burrows staying wild and having recently adopted a BLM Mustang, this book is an informative true story. A story that needs awareness, heritage and land. It clearly articulates the decade long struggle of government vs rancher vs the federally protected Wild Mustang and Burrows. I recommend this book for ANY and ALL who advocate for ANY and ALL of the issues that are facedWild Horse Country: The History, Myth, and Future of the Mustang out there.
I learned a lot about the dilemma that protecting the wild horses presents. A must read for any fan of the Mustang horses!
I found the interplay between the ranchers, the BLM, and the mustang advocates fascinating.Believe the author tried and was successful in being neutral with his facts and experiences.Hope the parties can find a win-win solution.
Bought this for a friend and she stayed up til midnight reading it!
This is an excellent book about a very complicate issue. David Philipps gives the the history of horses in America, present the problems that have created, and even comes up with a possible solution. The US Bureau of Land Management BLM is damned if they do, damned if they don't.But they also come across as a bumbling, often dishonest bureaucracy.
