The second edition of this reference, authored by Dan Gookin, is up-to-date as of Spring 2014. It's what could be called a missing manual, truly needed for first-time buyers of any of the main brands of Android tablets. Compared to the skimpy "starter" guides furnished with just about any tablet these days, here is a 300+ page "how-to" guide that reveals the capabilities of these semi-computers. All of the common features are explained in simple language along with hints on maximizing your use of them. There are five principal sections, complete with relevant illustrations that apply to most products, with or without built-in Internet service, so dependence on available wi-fi connections is not a drawback. Some sections could profit by more detail or by covering alternative procedures but, overall, what you need to know---what you should know---is here.
Got it as a gift for my technologically challenged grandmother. Her level with technology is as follows:-Learns new technology in 4-12 months depending on what the product is-Learns at a 70% of basic user level, still requiring some assistance for general issues (i.e. Help my printer spit out a blank page)-Is afraid to do anything that hasn't been learned before-Does better with small changes (The upgrade to from Windows 7 to Windows 10 was traumatic)Getting her a tablet was a better option than getting a laptop due to the weight, portability, and usefulness of a mobile operating system. I was only with her for a period of about three days and gave her explicit instructions to "Play with it, because it will only break if you drop it." When I returned across the country to my home, I knew my gift would be a waste if I didn't find her a rather good guide. This was the first book I tried for a tablet for her. She is excited as the book is easy to understand, and has helped her to continually learn and retain things. She's using this tablet at probably 85% of a basic user's level in less than a month! Great system for older users. I've always been a fan of the "For Dummies" series, and this is proof.
Not the best "For Dummies" book I've ever purchased. I find I spend more time looking things up online that I want to do than looking in vain for it in this book. For example, I download the app install packages to my PC, then teather my tablet to it and use Windows Explorer to copy them to the SD card in the tablet. The way the book was written, I wouldn't have known how to do it. Had to look online. The book assumes you'll just always have wifi available and will get your apps that way. What the book does cover, it covers very well, for one version older than the one on my tablet (v5 Lollipop).
When I purchased my First Android Tablet I knew nothing about the operating system, setting it up or some of the basics necessary to utilize my new Android product... It provides the basic step by step information necessary to set up the device, also how correct errors on software installed and then uninstalled when the determination is made that this was not what was needed and to be able to completely the software from the tablet... For the novice individual this book provides a great deal of useful information... If you have worked with the Android software before this product would be a waste of your time and financial resources...
I got a new Zeki tablet and I needed a book that explained android tablets. This is that book. It's from the For Dummies collection that we're all familiar with. It covers pretty much basically what you need to know to get you started. You don't have to read it from cover to cover, just find the chapter covering what you're stumped with and go from there. It was a great help to me, being new to tablets. So if you.re not savvy about tabs like me, get this book and learn at your own pace. One thing though, this book covers the Google Play Store. I have the Amazon App Store installed on mine but the info can be used as the download information is the same. Good Luck!
I'm reviewing this based on feedback from someone else. Recently we helped a friend of my wife pick out and purchase a Nexus 7 tablet, and I suggested that she also buy this book since she has no experience with Android and is not particularly computer savvy (although she is very smart and motivated to learn). I expected to have to do a lot of "hand-holding" to get her up to speed with the tablet, but she seems to be doing quite well on her own with just this book for guidance. In fact, I'm a little disappointed that I haven't been called on very much to provide my "expert" advice. :-) So, based on how well she is getting along with her new Nexus 7, I'd say that this book has been very helpful to her.
Although well written the contents of this book are very general in many areas. There may be some Android tablets that follow this book closely but for my Android tablets: a HiSense 7 Pro and an Apex 7.85 the contents are just not descriptive enough. For various topics the author constantly mentions "some" tablets. While I realize there are many many Android tablets out there I feel the author could have been more specific in many instances. For those reading this review that are very intuitive you may want to ignore my rantings.I would recommend this book to anyone who has little or no knowledge of Android tablets because the book does contain loads of valuable information but caution them not to necessarily expect a panacea of detailed instructions for their particular Android tablet.
I'm a little behind the tech revolution. I still use an old flip-phone because I don't need to be constantly connected. So, when my wife bought an Android tablet (simply to play games - and knowing nothing about them) I needed to learn how they work. This book brought me up to speed in no time.Written from 'opening the box' to recommended apps, it covers everything you need to know in terms anyone can easily follow. It's also very funny. Gookin has a deft touch explaining how things work while sounding like a smart-ass friend sitting next to you.Highly recommended.
