This was a textbook for class. It's hard to review because I had to read it. It goes through the child development theories before our modern times dating back to when children went to work instead of school. The chapters are not in historical order, not that it matters I'm sure your teacher will let you read one chapter at a time anyway.
Got this book for a class and have used it as a source for many papers since. Just a tip: renting books off of Amazon is super easy and cheap, but make sure you can keep the book as long as you need it. I've had a few semesters where the rental wasn't quite long enough--usually only by a few weeks, and discovered that buying the book(s) used off of Amazon was just as cheap. I now buy used or rent all of my grad school books from Amazon, and it has saved me hundreds. Much cheaper than renting or buying from my school.
Great book. Definitely seems like a keeper. It's a great book to read, because the content is well organized and interesting for those who are venturing into childhood developmental education. I enjoyed reading it even outside of my childhood developmental course. It's got pretty useful information, and has helped me to understand children a lot better. Or at least view them in a more constructive manner.
As far as textbooks go, this is a great choice. Crain does an excellent job of covering developmental therory in an easy to read and engaging manner. Even after finishing the course, I would consider rereading this in my spare time, thanks to the quality of the writing.

I thought this textbook was pretty good. It is lightweight, almost the size of a paperback novel. Some chapters were fairly long, but overall this was a good book. I needed this book for Developmental Psych and ordered it through the textbook rental program and received it in like 2 days which was fantastic. It was very easy to return this book as well. All the paperwork needed to return was easily accessible and you receive notification once the return has been received.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK! Theories of Development is exactly what the title implies. This book breaks down the theories of different developmentalists in a very clean cut way. It is also a nice sized book. Easy to read. I would recommend this to anyone in school or out of school. The world should know these theories. Will buy again (had to sell my copy, needed the money).
