Great book, and I like the way the TV show, was worked intothe stories of these infamous Serial Killers.It is a Who's-Who of this Dark Side of Our Society, and a veryscary one at that.Most Serial Killers are either Sociopaths or Psychopaths, andmost have an enormous ego.And if average Americans knew just how many Serial Killers,we have running around in our fair streets, it would indeed causea panic.Do you have a Serial Killer in your city or state?I do.....He kills hookers, and his AO is from Georgia to Maryland, around I 95.He has been adding to his body count since the 1980's.What makes people Serial Killers and why, you ask.....To find that out, the FBI created it's vaunted BAU, and profilingbegan.The MSM, likes to give these killers Nick Names, something theBAU frowns upon.That ego thing again, do not give the Serial Killer any more press.Serial Killers, cover just about all areas and kinks, and are very good atblending in, for awhile.They can be......Solo KillersSexual KillersFamous People KillersCannibal KillersTraveling KillersFemale KillersFamily Killers......Read the book, and get a good look into theirCriminal Minds.

This was only ok. It discussed some interesting cases, but tried to get through them too quickly - not enough real "profile" information about the cases - more what you'd find in a Wikipedia article on the person being discussed.It barely ties to Criminal Minds - mostly a few pictures from the show and the occasional 'This person was mentioned in Episode Blah and Episode Bleh".

Here's the thing: If you like the show and the drama, and you're interested in learning more about the references to criminals in the episodes, this is a thoroughly informative book. If you like the show and the drama, but you don't want to know about the real deal, don't get it. You will read stuff in this book that will make you uncomfortable. You will read stuff that will make your skin crawl. For those of you still interested, I rated this 4 stars for a number of reasons, all of which are a result of my just being picky.

I really liked this book, except for the very last chapter that describes what real profilers actually do. If you like the show, don't read the very last chapter; it will spoil the show.The writer was great with the details of the killers and very respectful to the reader (there is a chapter about children that are murdered and the author does NOT go into the detail of their deaths. I found that comforting because I didn't want to know what happened to children).I suggest reading it if you like the show OR if you want a non-fiction about serial killers.

This book was not really what I was expecting. It was definitely an interesting (and sometimes terrifying!) read, but I assumed from the description that the book would refer more to the show. It did provide back stories to some of the U.S.'s most famous serial killers, however; if you are taking a class in psychology (my high school class studied serial killers) or criminal justice, this may be a useful book for you. Just don't read it when you're home alone!

I stumbled across this ebook because of the show criminal minds. I thought the idea of knowing more about all the serial killers in the show would be funny and interesting.After reading it I can say: we truly live in a disgusting world!But aside from that, I had hoped that there would be more reference to the show itself, maybe a real profiling of the serial killers in it.This book mostly just mentions that the BAU take serial killer X as an example for something and then the reference to the show is done. It explains a lot about the life of the offender and how many people he killed in which ways, but there isn't really that much about the show. Every now and then you'll see a picture taken from the show, mainly showing the team.I gave it 4 stars because the book itself is quite informative and interesting though most of the time you'll be disgusted by all the al cases.

As a long time criminologist aficionado, I got this book with some trepidation. Was it only a tie in, an excuse to promote the Criminal Minds' show? On the contrary. It is a serious, thorough research into the different types of criminal minds, using examples from real life and only then mentioning the show and where are these crimes addressed. I found out many new things, changed my mind on others, the author did a truly remarkable job. Highly recommended.

This book has many details and it relates everything to the show. I hate reading but I actually enjoyed this book. As disturbing as it was, I wanted to understand how the episodes for criminal minds were thought of. I now know that many are based off of or at least mention many serial killers.

It is more attuned to a university student rather than a software professional trying to learn Haskell."Learn You a Haskell For Great Good!", I feel is a better first book for the software professional.But both books are excellent.Finally, I wish one of the Haskell authors would give a pragmatic description of Category Theory.Category Theory is a "tough nut" to crack.

The book was ok and I read from the beginning till the end. Unfortunately I was not convinced by Haskell's advantages but it could also be, that by preferring other Functional Programming languages, I dif not give it a chance.

Pros :1. very well explained with many pictures and examples.2. based on Haskell 2010(third edition)Cons :Learning Haskell is like learning C. Many of the language features are really easy, but some key features are challengeable.When learning C, most of syntax/semantics except arrays and pointers can be learnt within few days, or even hours. But then, you would have hard time to master pointers, arrays and memory management, etc.Haskell is not that different. Basic arithmetic, functions, types, pattern matching, guards and even recursions, you could learn in short time. But type classes, lambdas(especially, those reductions) are a bit harder and finally, monads can be very frustrating.I am generally satisfied with the contents of the book, but his explain about lambdas and monads is a bit sparely. I think, he worried about to introduce mathematics(especially, lambda calculus and category theory). But, the functional languages are different than those imperative languages, in that its root is pure mathematics. They have a small set of simple yet powerful rules, which enables many neat tricks, and many of the tricks actually come from mathematical thinking. When you want to fully understand and to use the functional languages properly, basic theories are somewhat unavoidable. Actually, you don't need to know such as undecidability, model theory or constructive logic, etc. but the basics of (untyped-/typed-)lambda calculus(especially those of reductions, evaluation orders and some of their theorems), category theory(monad is a bit hard here, because it lies in the deep sea of category theory, but functors, for example, can be easily explained) is very helpful for thinking about higher order things and its practical use. Also, you don't need so much effort to learn only the basics of them. Without that they are explained sufficiently, the tutorial is teaching only the subset of Haskell.Don't get me wrong, this book is the most nearly complete Haskell introductory text out there with the support of Haskell 2010. I wrote the insufficient parts, because it could be the 'complete' introduction to Haskell, when the author didn't avoid the whole theory parts. And since I have read his "Type Theory & Functional Programming", I have an impression that he can present the theories easily understandable. When this part is supplemented, it can be compared to the legendary (and most complete) "C programming : A modern approach" by K.N.King in Haskell world.So, despite of the cons, I'll give 5 stars, because it is actually much better than other Haskell books.

More than 50 million people have been diagnosed with autoimmune disease. A 2014 American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) survey revealed that it takes four years and five different physicians for a patient to receive an accurate diagnosis. As in Kelly's case, many patients are labeled chronic complainers and their concerns dismissed. If concerns are not dismissed, patients can be prescribed a variety of medications. Many times, without an exact diagnosis, these medications can potentially exacerbate a patient's condition. Not only are bodies being drained physically but so are finances. AARDA has heard Kelly's concerns. In an effort to alleviate patient suffering, AARDA distributed a physician survey to gauge how much autoimmune disease education they received in medical school. The results are alarming. The survey showed that 13% of the respondents didn't receive any autoimmune disease education at all while only 22% received five or more lectures. Sadly, 32% believed that they didn't receive enough training to diagnose or treat autoimmune disease and half of those that responded were uncomfortable with diagnosing autoimmune disease. These results are why Kelly's story is so timely and needed. Her chronicles are relatable and speak to the need of increased autoimmune disease education. Hopefully, readers will not overlook Kelly's bravery and only see only the challenges that she has endured. We hope that patients find strength to speak up and speak out about autoimmune disease. Writing letters to their Congressperson, participating in awareness walks and taking their stories to the local media are only a few ways to take action. Thank you Kelly for telling your story. Though I have suffered its symptoms for many years, I was just recently diagnosed with Sjogrens. It was good to know that I am not alone in my feelings regarding this disease. Your book put everything into perspective for me.I highly recommend this book too anyone that is suffering from an auto immune disease. You are not alone.

Enjoyable read, speaks to many of the "intangibles" of a chronic illness. I read it in one day, and have now asked my husband to read it. I think it will help him see some of the things I have difficulty communicating, and a confirmation of some of the things I can.

This clearly explains the difficulties of finding a diagnosis for a disease that doctors are not that well versed with. It also helps one see the affects of friends and family who don't understand - and some who do.Sjogren's is something I have, too, and find extremely frustrating that few doctors really know about it or how to treat its symptoms.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was a validation of sorts knowing that others feel the same way as I do dealing with this disease. This is a book for everyone to read whether you or a loved one is suffering from chronic illness or invisible disease, it helps explain some of the many things that are going on inside us as we come to terms with it. The problem with text book is that you get to read one chapter and you are done.

It's nice as an used book for this price. There are some marks on the book, and the cover is a little old, but I think it's nice for 20 dollars.

However for this audience I would recommend Wilson and Gisvold's Textbook of Organic Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry 11th Ed, because the figures and text are more complete providing a clearer more concise and rigorous treatment of the subject.

Sentences have extra nonsensical words inserted into them for no apparent reason, others are so convoluted they lose all meaning, etc. Since this is the first thing a prospective reader sees, it's certainly not going to help your book sales any. I am also a writer, and know first-hand how important it is to get a good editor! Highly recommend you do so, then re-post your book. And by the way, I followed just one of your tips in renaming my new 2018 kindle paperwhite, and while you did head me in the right direction, there were 2 steps I had to take that were missing in your instructions. If you're going to write a how-to-do-it book of any kind, it's extremely important not to miss ANY steps, because a lot of your readers will not have enough computer background to figure out the missing steps by themselves. Best of luck to you, and hope you come out with a much better revised version soon.

Ultimately, this book commits the cardinal sin (I'm not religious, but that term feels all too appropriate given the book's setting) of assuming the reader cares more about the author than about North Korea. Allow me to explain.Although the book labels itself as "A Memoir", Suki Kim has claimed in interviews that the "Memoir" description was an unwanted addition by her publisher. She asserts that her book is a piece of investigative journalism to be approached as such. However, few people familiar with investigative journalism would likely agree that the style and structure of this book fit that genre. It's very clearly a memoir in form, although certainly the manner in which she gathered her information qualifies as journalistic. She seems to have taken very detailed notes during her time there, despite apparently not having done much research in preparation for fitting in with evangelicals (for example, she doesn't know that communion usually occurs once a month, instead musing that it "took place only occasionally, for some reason"). Regardless, the book fails to present a remarkable example of either genre.Without You, There is No Us is written in a very personal voice that initially serves as an effective vehicle for the reader's identification with the author. Yet as the book progresses, the tone becomes increasingly melodramatic and self-pitying, even straying into self-indulgent melancholy (remember, she chose to go there and return for a second semester). In the beginning of the book, the personalization of the story adds depth, with her stories of how her family was affected by the Korean war. Her description of later immigrating to the US adds needed context to her later experiences in North Korea, although details of her adjustment to this new life are seriously lacking. Her experiences as a South Korean living in NK give her a few interesting insights, such as when she explains North Korea's "bastardization" of the Korean language, although she doesn't detail too many additional differences between the North and South Korean cultures. She instead generally writes from a very American viewpoint, particularly regarding her perception of her students, and often prefers to focus inward rather than on the people around her. This leads to some very one-dimensional characterizations of the people she encounters, particularly her co-workers, contributing to what I mentioned in the very beginning of this review: she overestimates how big her role should be in this story from the audience's perspective.Consequently, the book all too often veers into both mind-numbing mundanity and oversharing personal details. Her constant mention of her nameless, faceless "lover" in New York is a particularly egregious example: "In that world, I needed a lover, no matter how abstract, and that need drove me crazy some nights." ...Okay, so you went a couple months without getting laid? Cry me a river, most people have the occasional dry spell. Seriously, she was at PUST for 2-3 months with a break between semesters, and hasn't given any characterization of this person that would lead us to care. This is exactly the kind of pretentious melodrama the book increasingly falls into as the story progresses, despite its promising beginning -- and a great example of why it's not exactly journalistic in presentation. The closest journalistic genre I could grant her writing is that of "gonzo journalism", but Hunter Thompson would have skewered this book.Toward the end of her second and final semester at PUST, Ms. Kim spends time finagling a way to show her students a Harry Potter film. She creates considerable expectations in the reader regarding this event: she manipulates, she gets into a screaming match with her colleague, and eventually secures the right to show the film. The dramatic tension is built quite well. Now, how did the students react to the movie? I have no idea. Ms. Kim doesn't tell us. She says that she showed it to her students, but then she simply jumps forward to the next event without providing any details regarding her students' reactions. This is an abject narrative failure and is disappointing on so many levels, depriving the reader of such a valuable opportunity to find out how North Koreans would respond to outside media.My review has been harsh, certainly. I read a much better book about North Korea immediately before reading this one, so perhaps my expectations were too high. However, there were great parts of this book and initially it showed incredible promise. My biggest regret about this book, unfortunately, isn't its considerable wasted potential: it's that, by the nature of its very existence, publishing this subpar text has likely rendered it impossible for another writer to ever see the school and give us another perspective on what life is like there. Suki Kim's storytelling is at its best when she describes what she sees, hears, or remembers; it's at its worst when she describes her feelings.I'll give this book the grade that I know my journalism mentor, a kick-ass investigative journalist who has written excellent undercover exposés of her own, would have given Ms. Kim: "C-. Some good ideas here, but please rewrite and resubmit."

This is a well written and captivating book about one person's longer term experience with a segment of North Korean culture.Had I not spent some time reading at least half a dozen previous books about North Korea, by escapees, journalists, and otherswith specific and long term ties to the nation/culture, I may not have understood where she was coming from, as it is clear manyof the snarky people giving their long winded reviews do not. Many in these reviews seem to have the expectation that she woulddeliver a story and narrative from the standpoint of a free world, mostly American culture. Her book triumphs in being able to take us through the looking glass to the mindset, near as she can, of their culture. It is no wonder , as a few have said "she didnt seem to get to know the boys"; or - "there is no individual personality coming out in the students" - Hey, part of the message is, they don't know themselves, and they had little if any opportunity to develop their own "individuality". NK is a puzzle, with many layers, and the author experienced one layerwithin the midst of a culture that reviews true throughout all the books I have read. I find her references to her "life back home" a necessary counterpoint to the sucking vampire like energy she had to endure in such a repressive place for weeks on end. This is no real reflection on her personally, it is just how it is there, and how it must feel to adjust to that mind blowingly different reality. I would recommend this book to those interested in deepening their understanding of North Korea, while also recommending other books to round out the picture and validate her observations to a deeper level of reader understanding.

This book gives a fascinating bit of insight, although the view is very narrow, into the lives of People in North Korea. I acknowledge the criticisms given in the review from "laughingbull," -- the beginning of the book is very autobiographical, she doesn't explain why they're learning English, and her perspective is limited. These are correct, but since this book is up-front about essentially being the author's memoir of her time in North Korea, this should be expected. To address each of those points:1) Autobiographical - It's a memoir, so references to her background are not only expected, but helpful in explaining her interactions. Her Korean-American background is something that made her more accessible to her students. I do agree, though, that the frequent references to her "lover" got a bit tedious and unnecessary.2) Doesn't answer questions - First, I think one point of the whole book is that neither the author, her North Korean students, nor the other teachers are given explanations for the regime's or the school's actions. For the most part, I think Kim does a good job of providing her observations with some background to help lead the reader to form their own ideas of why the regime does certain things. "Laughingbull" also mentioned that she did not explain the regime's hypocrisy in simultaneously condemning all things American while teaching its most elite students English. Again, a continuing theme throughout the book is that the regime often contradicts itself - I did not feel this point needed to be explained. They have a practical need for their elite to learn English -- knowing your enemy -- that I think is something that they can easily explain in their propaganda. It makes perfect sense that they would like their scientists to understand English. I'm sure the recent Sony hackers had a pretty good working knowledge of English....3) Narrow view - Again, no kidding. This is a memoir, not a research book. The author is very up-front about the fact that she gained a very limited, but rare, exposure. However, a major difference in the perspective that she describes in this book, compared to other books about life in NK, is the type of people that she was exposed to. Other books I've read are mostly accounts of defectors, who were generally from more impoverished backgrounds. Kim's students give a insight to the lives of the "privileged" class.Bottom line though: very interesting and well-written, I had a hard time putting the book down once I got started.I also recommend the book "Nothing to Envy" for an account of the lives of "ordinary" North Korean citizens.

Immunology can be a difficult subject, since there is so much overlap between topics. This book was okay, but I didn't find it too helpful as a study aide. I would recommend other texts.

I had to get this for a class and it has been very helpful for that class as well as for some of my others. The book is written in such a way that it is easy to read, not a whole bunch of technical jargon. Thus far I have not fallen asleep while reading it, so to me that means it is well written.

This is a great book and very informative for my immunology class. The book was in good condition, and I still used it even after my class ended.
